You will note that while the gates all point South, the position of the gate in the system is accurate if you were to put the starting system and gate and destination system and gate in a line. All they had to do was point the gate away from the star. I don't think it's that simple, especially since you often have two or three stargates around the same planet, which would make the destination stars lie along a very narrow arc. I don't see that much of that on the map. Either way, creating a vector from two points in space and aligning an object along that vector is simple math. The real "task" here is updating the database.
Anyway, I'm gonna get on Sisi tonight and check this out myself, sounds great. Leaves only the fresh scent of pine. |

Not really, the math is really simple when you have a position for every "star" in the universe. All you have to do then is run a SQL update or insert for each gate. Takes time, not a ton of smarts. Some would argue its pointing north then again which direction can you go if you're at the south pole right?

Wow. Just checked this out; I love coming out of warp (new tunnel is 3pic!) to see a gate at a jaunty angle. You can look along the gate and see your destination star. I'm of a mind to see if the star color matches what is reported on the map!
**** Incarna, THIS is immersion! Leaves only the fresh scent of pine. |

Yea all the stars I tested matched. It was fun looking at a yellow star in the sky, warping to it then being in a yellow star system. Awesome!!!!
