Today I was soloing a bunch of AUs in my 1337 freighter with some MAAAAAAAAAAD warp speeds and realized that sometimes after I appear in the next system my freighter will turn the wrong way. wrong way you say? yup, wrong way. Instead of taking the shortest way to align to the next gate, i turned and aligned the LONGEST way possible. I swear I was almost inline with the out gate and it would have been a mad fast align and warp, instead I was treated to watching my freighter turn a graceful 300 degrees.
I would like to thank CCP for this extended look at my freighter and the nice lighting effects. I know with the warp speeds and align time these massive juggernauts of MAAAAAD AU soloing would be missed if it wasn't for this slow turn in the opposite direction. Little things like this are what make this game great! |

Not sure of you...
Is aligntime still the same, (legit kudos thread) or does it actually take longer? (weird issue)
Anyhow, I have noticed ships rotating in a way that makes them seem to take longer from a pure logical viewpoint, but I only fly frigates nowadays.
Aligntime should be unaffected. |

Align time should remain the same, unless prop mods are involved. I've had ships warp backwards and sideways many times.

Any time I have to move 10Bil or more in one load, I'll always hit the freighter with a couple fed navy webs. That'll get it rollin out sideways, and sometimes backwards, every time. EVE's only legitimate ISK halving service. I have 50Billion to not give away. It's easy for you to double my money. Just send me some isk, has to be 100Mil or higher, and I will send you back half. I can't lose. One guaranteed winner every round. Do it now. |

Confirming that this is both effective and hilarious. "Verily, I have often laughed at the weaklings who thought themselves good because they had no claws."

Whatever you see on the screen is a figment of the client's imagination.
Ships are represented as a sphere ("ball" in dev-speak) with a velocity vector.
There is no concept of alignment either; that's really when the velocity vector is within ~3 degree (measured in radians actually) cone centered on the destination.
Sometimes the client messes-up the illusion. Do search for T3 flying backwards. |

Ships in EVE behave as spheres, so it doesn't matter if you're facing the opposite direction when initiating warp (from 0 m/s) it will still enter warp just as fast as if you were facing the exact right direction. This is why i both cringe and laugh at clueless people telling others that "passive alignment" when sitting still is viable. This mechanic is amazing though, gotta love it when capitals warp sideways, especially titans. |

OP - "Soloing AU's" lol, well written.
Freighters have had visual anomalies for a long, long time. I just love it when I go into warp broadside, it thrills me wondering if the warp stresses are going to tear my hull apart.
Apparently testing end cases of the graphics is never done, but that's ok - we didn't want that immersion anyway. CCP Punkturis-á "I want to get in on the goodposter circle jerk!"

Ive had my ship start turning toward the new gate, then suddenly spin around over 360 degrees in the other direction. My guess is the client keeps track of how many times the ship has turned in the same direction and at times has to "unwind" some numerical value.
As others have said, it makes no difference to how long it takes to get to warp.
Another odd effect of how the client shows ships is it wants to keep ships pointed in the direction they are moving. This results in some very odd visuals. The best is you start with a titan that has been sitting in one spot for a long time. Then bump it on the nose with most any ship. The titan gets a tiny amount of speed backwards, just a fraction of a meter per second. But that is enough, the client wants to have the ship pointed in the direction it's moving, so it spins the titan around 180 degrees, all because of a small tap on the nose. http://vincentoneve.wordpress.com/ |
