so here i am flying to low sec in my 50 dps incursus fit. heart racing for my first newbie kill. i jump through the gate into low sec system of 0.4. i see a random person at the gate. i lock target fire, scramble and web. suddenly i go pop. i was confuzzled as to why until i then realise there was a big shiny sentry gun at gate and thats when it hit me. i have much to learn... |

My first loss was this way as well. I engaged a AFK idiot in a gate but I got popped by the gate guns.
As if getting popped by a gate gun wasn't embarrassing enough, I think he got a kill right off me as well.

...but what you learned what pretty darn important! Just FYI, even after 3 years I'm likely to make a same-ish mistake. Send a fleetmate to his death yesterday by letting him take sentry gun aggro for too long. The learning process is never complete! At least you had the balls to try, this is a good quality in Eve. |

I made that mistake too. I was hunting in a gang and there was a target playing cat-and-mouse with us. He jumped into the system, I figured he was about to engage and ran up to tackle. My poor Rifter didn't know what hit it. |

So a few steps to make your next visit last a bit longer.
1. Learn to make a safe spot in each system.
2. Learn to use Dscan. Warp to your safe, and practice.
3. Dscan FW Novice Plexes, as these will only have other T1 Frigs in them, and will be your best place to find a fight you can learn something from.
Rinse / repeat.

props for coming to low looking for fights man!
But, to be honest, in a 50 dps incursus you have no chance at all, pretty much. I disagree with who says "you're gonna learn someting anyway", you're not gonna learn a thing if you are so grossly outmatched you're gonna go blap no matter what you do, even against a fit that in theory would be a suitable target for your ship
So, in order for your second attempt to be more succesful, get a proper fit, proper skills (nowhere near all V eh), learn the security system (basically around stations or gates you can attack safely only criminals, flashies, andwar targets), un f**k your overview.
If you like the incursus, a nice fit for low sec involves (sorry i don't have eft here so can't provide the usual format and im gonna go from memory). It's pretty straight forward, sit inside a plex if you're in FW space, engage target, set keep at range at 7.5 KM, shoot, OH AB if necessary. LOWS Damage control II Magnetic Field Stabilizer II Small Ancillry armor repper Adaptive nano plating II MIDS Ab II x5 enervator j5b scrambler HIGHS 150 mm Rails II loaded with cal/fed navy antimatter RIGS if i remember correctly you're gonna need a processor overclocking unit, rest of rigs can be a choice between burst areator, anti explosive pump, auxiliary nano pump
You can meta it down and still have reasonable performance, even with pretty low skills (i'm talking even nothing at V eh) this fit will easily give you around 100 dps or close to with a nice tank
Don't give up and GL on your next attempts! |

I always die when I pvp as well. it happens, don't worry about it.
do a little more skill training L4's in the key areas will do
check the different overview setting options info like speed, transversal can sometimes be a help in determining what to shoot at add a 2nd overview tab specifically for pvp with no gates or stations displayed, just player ships add a 3rd overview tab with just stations, gates & planets showing .. call it the "Sir Robin" tab |

I couldn't help but laugh, this is like many of my pvp experiences. Kudos for going into LS.
Contrary to what an above poster said, of course you can learn something in your incursus. People have taken out BCs in their rookie ships, so your low DPS isn't the problem, what you need to do is learn to figure out what ships you have a chance, and which ones you have no chance at all. One way to figure this out is to get in cheap ships and attack everything, another is to make a list and memorize all the different fits of the many different ships in eve. Which sounds more fun? And even if you get in over your head, you get to practice running away, which is always useful.
In general, as a newbie you won't be attacking people at the gates. If you are flying a frigate, memorize the names of ships that control full flights of drones. The reason a rookie ship took out a BC is because it had no drones.
You might even specialize in some form of EW to level the playing field against the higher SP players. Nothing is more satisfying that eliminating a 3 year advantage with a 15,000 isk module. Honestly, it isnt just noobs that things like this happen to. Back in the day I cannot tell you how many experienced folk I got concordorkiened because they resided in low/null and forgot the HS mechanics. While just the other day I almost got really screwed coming from low to hs (I was carrying about a bil in loot from a gank in a somewhat pricy ship) - I got spotted in low and jumped to high thinking i was safe not realizing I still was suspect flagged, boy was I surprised when they followed me. Fortunately I had an mwd fitted and they did not have a scram - so I could motor back to the low sec gate and get away - all in all a nail baiting near derp.
Derps happen. They happen to everyone. The thing about derps is that you just got to learn from them if you can and move on. I don't play, I just fourm warrior. |

And exactly which ships a derpfit 50 dps incursus in the hands of a newbro would have a chance against? None, except an even worse **** fit ship. Heck even just passive shield regen on some frigs might tank that.
That is exactly what i'm saying, flying a 50dps incursus won't teach you a thing, and might actually cause the pilot to make wrong assumptions, thinking he can't take on frigate X because he got blapd super fast by it and didn't put a dent in his tank, while in reality a proper fit incursus might just murder said ship.
Remember the guy's flying a frig solo (major balls), so you can't really tell him "ehi, everyone can be useful" or drop the usual "every fleet needs tackle" and "every bit of dps helps" and he could learn stuff like spiraling to a bigger target and so on.
I'm not talking out of my ass here, i'm still a half noob, still learning and plenty to learn, and the first times i ventured out in PvP i was solo, in a derp fit ship, with terribad skills. I didn't learn a thing, because i got blapped even when i did (what i now know was) the right move.
I started learning what to fight and how to fight when i started bringing out decently fitted ship, seeing where and when and what i did wrong.

Because you aren't gonna go blap no matter what. Sometimes you get unlucky and stumble on a good camp, but usually you can at least escape. How to survive or even win an uneven encounter is a useful skill and not giving up is something that can't be taught.
Sometimes you do have to go boom a few times before it really sinks in that encounters are generally won or lost long before the first shot is fired. Never sit still, except when cloaked. Either immediately start building that angular velocity and take control of the encounter or warp out.

The best thing about learning something at the cost of your ship is you do not forget the lesson quickly.
The sentry guns will kill anything destroyer or smaller fast, and will kill cruisers inside 15 sec unless they are heavily tanked. This is true in both lowsec and highsec (in highsec, CONCORD will blap you if you survive the sentries).
Battlecruisers can tank them, but they are a bit slow for most lowsec applications. How to learn PvP:
0: Buy pile of cheap frigates and modules 1: Shoot at target 2: Get blown up 3: Refit ship: REVENGE 4: Get blown up again 5: Curse at screen 6: Message target, ask why you blew up 7: Refit again 8: Find new target 9: If (Blown up) GOTO 3
10: HAHAHA I WASN'T BLOWN UP THIS IS THE BEST THING EVER 11: Forget you're flagged, get killed trying to enter station/gate or wander into trap while gloating 12: DAMN IT 13: Whatever, you still have like 15 ships left 14: NO, THEY ALL GOT BLOWN UP IN THE GOTO LOOP 15: Shrug 16: GOTO 0
(If anyone thinks I'm being down on PvP... no, PvP is awesome. Learn to enjoy the fights whether you're blown up or not.) |

Oh and OP, because of your excellent attitude, I'll try to remember to contract* you a free PVP-fit Enyo. You won't be able to fly it yet but the prerequisite skills for the ship and its modules will serve as a good guide of skills you might wish to train early in your EVE career.
I hope you lose it in a ball of fire.

It happens.
I've had far worse losses since my first ship went boom.
Wait till you get an entire sniper BC fleet wiped out due to some minor mistake! That happens too.
Learn from it. Eve is still just a game, so even getting blown up ought to be fun. I get blown up almost daily. Eventually you'll forget to even rename ships, they become so disposable.
Upgrade your clone, fit up another death canoe, die in a blaze of pixelated glory. This is the Eve way. |

Hey, I recently went into Lo-Sec in a frigate to look for this fabled "solo-PvP" thing. I managed to sniff out an Interceptor at a planet with my D-Scan and recklessy engaged him.... except that he apparently went AFK by that time. Not that it mattered because according to the killmail he hadn-¦t fitted any guns anyway. Undoubtly drunk from my own success I then engaged a Noobship at a station... completely forgetting about station guns. Two or three hits and I was in half-structure. Fortunately I got out.
I also managed to bring that terrible beast down, so there is that!
So much for Lo-Sec. Forum-unbanned since 2011.10.20.

Because you aren't gonna go blap no matter what.
Even if you do die consistently for a month trying to solo, you explode in different ways. Noticing all the different ways to die and remembering them is how one learns: this one kited me with missiles; that one got in my face with blasters; these guys had friends in system; etc.
All your deaths are meaningless only if you don't make them meaningful. Otherwise, death is a very good teacher. |
