Ahem, now back to the REAL issue.
If you want to debate it on RP grounds, which I'm happy to do, then the argument that shield generators are heavier than armor is absurd beyond belief. What do you think they're MADE OF? Amarrian armor is made out of tungsten carbide, and they have HUGE ships that are COVERED with it. I don't know what you think the shield generators are made of, but they would have to fill half the volume of our ships to weigh that much.
In fact, I'm going to make this much, much simpler.
This picture explains everything.
According to the database, the ship on the left is 115 million kilograms. The one on the right is 107.5 million kilograms.
I DO NOT BUY THAT FOR ONE SINGLE SECOND.
Oh my god, itĘs very simple.
Let's imagine Ammar designers: -Ammar designer (ad) - "We want to make something new with stylish look, don't you think?" -Ammar accountant (aa) - "How much will it cost?" -ad - "Not much. All we need is some solid blocks of armour, propulsion and Amiga based navigation system. Armament - some lasers, lenses and one crew member with a microfiber rag to remove fingerprints and dust from our optics". -aa - "I like it - cost effective and robust. Let's shape it into something similar to Tetris block, or a crocodile with open jaws and call it an apocalypse".
Apocalypse during a battle: -crew member - "Sir we have a large hole in our armour. What shall I do?ö -captain - "Take this hammer and go fix it".
Conclusion - low mass, easy to operate, good looking.
Now let's look at Caldari.
-Caldari designer (cd) - "My old ship is slow. We need something new, you know. Something with dual core processor arrays, 8 TB of memory, fibre channel based hard drive arrays, gigabit Ethernet, and the most powerful visualisation processor we can get. I want my 'Girls of Anime: Volume 1' run smoothly at the highest FPS available!!" -Caldari accountant (ca) - "But according to our safety regulations you will need UPS power supply, 5 additional server rooms, fire prevention system, stabilised power core, and 24 system admin, 10 database developers, full help desk stuff and so on..." -cd - "That's nothing! We can throw our armour away and replace it by our shield generators. All we need is to decide which shield system we should use - OpenShields or ShieldsWithWINDOWS." -ca - "No difference. ShieldsWithWINDOWS tend to display blue screen of death during every battle while Openshield needs to have its core recompiled before every engagement..."
Scorpion during a battle: -crew member - "Sir, our shields are half way to their end. What shall I do?" -captain - "Have you tried to find something with Google? Don't you have our FAQ online you noob??!!" -sysadmin1 - "Guys, has anyone seen my latest collection of Gallentean music? It was placed in our optical jukebox. It took me 4 days to download it from Concord's network so I don't want to lose it." -sysadmin2 - "I need to know our external IP address - we are unable to establish comm link with our flagship." -sysadmin14 - "...and then I took this saw in my hand. Man I am telling you - 'Complex Rider - Total Annihilation' is completely breathtaking!!" -database developer - "I want my USB powered slippers back! And my USB electric blanket too!! I told ya I must warm up my legs every day!"
So, in the other words. Ammar ships are simple and do not need a lot of staff to operate. On the other side Caldari ships need a lot of highly specialised staff with their equipment, lots of junk. Just imagine any big company with its IT department and it will be obvious that any Caldari ship must be heaviest than its opponent from any other race despite its smaller dimensions.
