I thought one of the many reasons for going to the fan-fest was to have a beer and a joke with those you 'hate' in-game?
That was very much my experience. There were lots of chunky, pale, black-clad nerds at FF, but they were pretty much all happy, enthusiastic, bright people that it was a pleasure to meet.

Only thing I can think of is DUST. Not meant to be a shot at DUST players, but this year they were very explicitly urged to come, and then "treated" to a presentation that basically told them that CCP was moving away from their platform of choice. Note, I think Legion is a fantastic leap in the right direction and I'm looking forward to playing it, but I imagine the console fellas were less enthused, and perhaps a little more likely to express that anger in various ways. Pure speculation, though. "EVE is a dark and harsh world, you're supposed to feel a bit worried and slightly angry when you log in, you're not supposed to feel like you're logging in to a happy, happy, fluffy, fluffy lala land filled with fun and adventures, that's what hello kitty online is for." -CCP Wrangler |

I know at least a few people were talking about it when I was still in Iceland. Hopefully at least some of them will step foward with confirmation, but the sad truth is that anyone involved in the fighting will probably keep quiet about it.
Wibla mentioned seeing a fight at the hotdog stand around 5am one morning, but thinks it was locals not fanfest goers. The locals seemed to be involved in some of the other fighting from what I've heard and seen. Kesper had to pin a local against a wall for 5-10 minutes until they calmed down after trying to push past him roughly, and they looked ready to throw down until they realized they were being pinned by someone many times their size. I personally think that would've ended badly had Kesper not defused the situation in the way he did because there were three of us there with him and at that point we probably would've dogpiled the guy had he started throwing punches. It was almost funny watching the anger in the guy's face get slowly replaced with pants-shitting fear. I say almost funny because at the time it was funny, but after sobering up, it really wasn't.
For the most part my experiences with other people this year were stellar. Luckily, I didn't get involved in any of the fighting, but saw a lot of it, and heard mention of other fights. |

Don't let what's happened prevent you from coming to a future fanfest. The reality is that for the majority of folks who go it is a fun time where you get to party with people you don't get to see all that often, and that's what it was like this year. Last year was a lot calmer despite the larger numbers.
Don't let a few jerks ruin the fun you could potentially have there.

The substance is called glass Hard, yes. Corrosive-resistant, also yes. The problem with glass is that it is also brittle and tends to produce surgically sharp edges when shattered. Also, slippery when wet. I'm thinking the city of Reykjavik probably DON'T want a monument where if somebody falls over on it while wearing goth pants, that person goes to the hospital looking like they just picked a fight with Freddy Krueger. You ever tried to actually go through a thick plate glass window - like found everywhere in commercial buildings? Good luck.
I have, in fact, been thrown through a plate glass window (door actually, but whatever). Hurt like hell. Just this side of what I'd imagine being thrown through a brick wall feels like.
I recommend not fooling around near glass buildings when on a Tequila bender.

I have been thrown through some interesting solids but never plate glass. As I said I have a rather problematic sensitivity to pain. I cannot imagine being thrown at something like that. I am somewhat confused as to how the monument was vandalized once more. I would think that surveillance would be a priority after the first time they messed with my name.

Although I did not attend Fanfest I can bring to mind some of the human behavior associated with this. Naturally EVE is an older persons game. It is time based unlike the COD and BF players perfer instant gratification and await the next release. So iin theory it separates the kids from the adults. Well unfortunately these kids start to grow up and they will flock together. I am friends with people in my corp outside of EVE and we all are pretty much over the age of 27. We have one exception ableit a son of a corp member. The problem is that the player base is getting younger and it is not comprised of the computer "nerds" as people may beieve. I know military, ATCs, Firemen (myself included) and other professions that enjoy this alternative relality. However when it comes to collective behavior the masses sometimes line up together and stupidity prevails. A group of a few can make an entire community look like complete trash. Just to keep you updated on this, we're moving forward with investigations and suchlike, and have had a visit at CCP Headquarters from a couple of players with further information this evening that's basically confirmed everything for us.
We'll have more details for you guys hopefully sometime tomorrow. Thanks for your patience.
I am going to through this out there.
CCP will do the right thing when it comes to due process and such. That being said they will not release the names, identities, or corp/alliances being given as that would result in zero professionalism and betray the trust of its players base. If you did something stupid and then realized your errors would you want to be thrown to the wolves. I am not saying with this toon did was right but everyone has their day in court or any type of council. If they are admitting to it, and are will to pay for it and take their punishments then all will be done.
Remember names travel fast in this verse and if this pilot will probably kicked from their corp in a very ugly/public way. Just because I am not a fan of the Goons doesn't mean I want them all out of EVE. They bring some commical to the game and do produced some of the best D*** battles I have been a part of. -The Gene Pool Could Use a Little Chlorine!! Proud Member of the Flying Dead/Bloodline

Triskian wrote:Considering how extremely upset some people in this thread are, I think it bears mentioning that if the person or persons involved are caught, that it is in fact not okay to obliterate their names from the monument in some kind of revenge. Nor is it okay to enact your own justice upon them in other ways. CCP is handling it, you don't need to do anything other than be outraged or come forward with information. I've gotten that vibe from some of the posts in this thread that some random person might take it upon themselves to do something equally stupid to what's already happened. Many of the posts in this thread could very well be scaring the vandal off from stepping forward due to fear of retribution that does not fit the crime.
I noticed that this year's fanfest was far more violent than last year's. Brawls at Nora's, cop cars and paddy wagons filled up with drunk assholes, and people getting the crap kicked out of them over pubcrawl flags. Punching someone out over a strip of cloth, breaking their nose, and kicking them when they're on the ground is (this happened, I don't know who it happened to, but it wasn't a pretty sight), in my opinion, far worse than what happened to the monument. The vandalism might be explained partially by the general attitude of some folks who play the game and can't distinguish reality from internet space and consumption of alcohol, but there is never any excuse for violently attacking someone unless it's self-defence. The night of the Party At the Top of the World I saw the cops tossing people into the paddy wagon almost wholesale, something that did not happen last year. From what I saw, despite there being far fewer people, there were a lot more people getting arrested for being ******* drunks than last year.
A lot of vandalism (putting your name on the walls in the washrooms of a bar is vandalism too, folks), fighting, and general assholery happened this year. The monument vandal should be ashamed, but we should also be ashamed. Maybe we should appologize as a community to the city of Reykjavic for our behaviour and consider ourselves lucky that they're letting us come back next year. We can do better, we have done better, and we should do better.

Frankly, on a personal note, I find this absolutely disgusting and completely detrimental to the EVE Community's close knit spirit. We'll have more information tomorrow afternoon/evening regarding this. Really sorry that this has happened guys
Are you serious? Legit....please lend me a moment of your time. You and all of your cohorts at CCP games have created a hostile gaming environment. You yourselves have even told people to "HTFU" which is rude as rude gets and makes you guilty of the exact things you're illuminating as absolutely disgusting.
Have you played EVE lately? Miner gankers. Lets talk about them. Lets shoot a miner, that can't fight back and has either no weapons, or just 5 little drones and that's cool. You have Concord, ok...I get the Concord thing. But you are building a world and letting people come home from their miserable existences where they earn minimum wage or get dissed on by the head cheerleader and football jock and take out all of their aggression and Misanthrophy on mobile tractor units and peaceful players just hanging out having a good 'ol time.
I understand that the EVE market relies on things like that to function and if no miner every got destroyed then Hulks would be 10 for 0.99 cents/isk. I get it. However....your "Concord" consequence is not a consequence at all. You can just warp and cloak after like, what? 45 seconds? poof...problem solved.
You act surprised like you haven't created this miserable f!cking existence in this game. People are mean here because you give them the tools to be mean. Its spilled out into Twitter, Erotica1 was banned for being a f!cking psychopath and what else is going on? I talked to a guy tonight who tried to gank me in Daran and told him attacking a miner that can't fight back is like a grown man beating his wife because he knows she won't do anything about it.
That's the lessons you're instilling in the players by allowing this nonsense. You need to not worry about 10 expansions, Valkyrie, Legion/Dust and focus on building an environment that is friendlier. You're basically sucking in the Call of Duty crowd and telling them its ok to continue to be bullies and buttholes and mean and torture people through social media and in real life.
There are real people behind every toon/avatar you see. Some of us aren't devoid of morals and ethics. You say you care, but do you really? It doesn't seem like it. You are doing a job, little CCP (insert name here) has a real name and was a little boy playing Cowboys and Indians (or Cowboys and Aliens lol) once upon a time and you grew up to a game developer and got a job so you can stock your fridge full of snacks and buy diapers for the baby. This is a job to you. You get paid to do it....if things start sucking, you can just go work somewhere else. We all do that. If my job started sucking, I'd move on.
So what shows that you give a crap about anything? You work for, or ARE the devil in disguise that perpetuates all of this hysteria with your videos telling gamers to HTFU and the player base with their various terms "carebear" and the idiots who message you in game and tell you that you're ignorant but don't realize by the very essence of them messaging you to TELL YOU that you are ignorant makes them twice as ignorant as they perceive you to be.
The stupidity of this community is bewildering. Now I'm sure you sit there armed full of carebeat htfu why are you playing responses because you and the community literally do not possess the required thought processing brain power to formulate or articulate an eloquent response, and that's fine. Knock yourself out with your depraved sense of morality and ethical standing.
But don't sit on your own forum, CCP somebody and tell me that you are disgusted. You did this. Do you see this type of sh!t going on in A Kingdom of Keflings? Nope.
Think about why. Dwell on that. I'm not saying make the game baby friendly....but its like a 3rd world country in New Eden where people lack the ability to be civil or think rationally. |

They've created a hostile gaming environment yet. They have not asked players to extend their passions into the metagame. That's like blaming two athletes of a sports league for fighting off the field because the sport they participate in encourages fierce competition.
