I have been playing nearly 5 months and am loving the depth of Eve (even though I have only been in 0.0 once-I'll be there eventually). I recenlty was a little strapped for isk and looked through my assets for stuff to sell. At that point, I realize I had tens of millions in ships that I had simply stopped flying, a few cruisers here, a barge there, a couple indies, a million shuttles lying around.
I'm wondering-how many ships do most people keep, and do you ever have a few of the same ship lying around just because?
Secondly, when you stop flying a ship, do you strip and repackage it? I'm asking because I 'lost' some of my good fittings for a while because they were equipped and I wasn't sure which ship they were on.

mhm good question,
countless shuttles,
fitted:
a domi and a raven,
a brutix,
a ferox,
a retriver,
a raptor
a had last weekend way more ships...
...but got unlucky a couple of times :)

I'm a carebear and a collector ...
I keep at least one of each ship I can fly, all of them fitted as best as I can ... I even went as far as making alts in the other races to escrow to myself the noob ships.
I have 58 ships right now ... still working on weaponry and spaceship command skills

Used to have one of each t2 frig I could fly, but that got too expensive to keep up so now I have a few ishkurs and a typhoon.

To many.. last time i looked in that Hangar, it said about 60, but many are not assembled and there are a few duplicates.

I have five bases scattered around Empire where I have ships and ammo stored, hence the '5' of a lot of ships. Cuts down on moving time :P
And my alt has uh....a Raven, a Scorpion, an Occator, and a Buzzard. Oh, and a Phoenix.
Im pretty sure most people who post in these threads pull random numbers out of thin air and put them next to ship names, tbh, though :P

Just the ships I think I'll need, trashing/selling excess from assets list pretty often.
With jump clones it's practical to have a few operational bases, each having couple spare combat ships, some support things (hauler/frigs) and versatile stock of modules.

I dont hang onto shuttles. I buy em when I need to go somewhere quick... when I'm done... I just reprocess it and get about 30% of my isk back.
Only ingame 1 month... my ship retention may change as I grow into this game.

Used to unstrip all my ships once I was done with it, but after a while just left it on there and bought new stuff if I needed it. Sometimes it's a nice surprice to find this sweet named item on a ship you'd forgotten about.

I tend to keep all fittings in one large station container and if I move on I can haul them to the next place. Over time you tend to loot extra/spare/mutliple (delete as applicable) fittings anyway.

I try to keep mine limited as I hate having to repeatedly waste money on insurance and spending hours moving them to our next base of operations. Besides since I went max specialization with my Ishtar I haven't really flown anything else.. *tickles Ishtar* looooooove youuuuuuuuu
