interesting artcile just waiting for the first test builds to come out of CCP - no metnion of thje 8 new 0.0 regions to play in nor the various new boosters or ships that are expected
Still the voice chat is still a big unknown - interesting point about factional warfare which is touted by CCP as actually for newbie players.
SHould be interesting regardless

i think ccp is touting factional warfare as a way to get more existing players into PvP rather than actually pushing it for new players.
think "new to PvP" rather than "new to game". -

Factional Warfare is not 100% PvP attraction. You will be able to participate in NPC operations as well. Unless I misread something in Magazine.

Wow what an insidiously negative article. There's about 5 or 6 stealth 'put-downs' in there.

The most important part of the article is when the author refers to the implamentation of VOIP in the game.
He says it's unclear how CCP will choose to implament it.... that VOIP may or may not be a free service, and that CCP may or may not ban 3rd party progs like TEAM SPEAK or VENTRILO after they put VOIP in.... (for obvious reasons).
Wouldn't surprise me either way...

It doewn't seem like it would be possible for CCP to ban 3rd party voice chat software. That would be the same as them saying that players are not allowed to communicate via regular email or telephone either. What's the difference?
anyway, i reckon whoever wrote that article some kind of jerk. nobody who's actually pvped in eve would say that you don't need voice comms, that regular text chat is good enough.

I nominate this as the most stupid thing being said in the article:
"given the relatively slow pace of EVE's gameplay and combat, it's difficult to see a pressing tactical need for anything other than the game's text chat channels."

I can see how GameSpy came up with that thought. I personally spend a lot of time playing afk, though primarily while mining. This game for the most part for me has been slow, but still enjoyable. I bet though that GameSpy probably didn't spend enough time to get out into low sec space where more of the action is. And I happend to like the fact that things run a little slower here, especially in combat it give you more chance to respond, and it's not that riduculously slow, infact, I would just call it real life real time combat.

Yes, i can see how they came up with it too. They probably logged in and ran around in newbie ships for a while, fighting some npc bots. Its obvious they didnt take part of the chaotic nature of gang/fleet warfare.
I would like to see this guy coordinate efforts using text chat while fighting a group of other people. While he is typing, all sorts of stuff can be happening on the screen. Its so much easier to talk while controlling your ship compared to typing. And the reviewer also put voip as a negative thing with the game? Incredible.
Im very tired of these morons reviewing games. Seriously, it has to stop. Where are all the intelligent people?

What a tard....if that fat pasty white D&D nerd logs out of everquest long enough to fly in a group of more than three he will soon find out how quickly the butt-pucker-o-meter rises.
I said that respectfully of course.

Game reviews are old hat - it's not like jet set willy or turrican where you could see what it was all about in half an hour.
Even simlpe games like BF2 require more time spent on them - especially so when you get into multiplayer.
But something like Eve Online? Not a chance. I think CCP should work with sites like gameplay and the game magazines to give reviewers a proper taste - create them an account with skills and goodies ready to roll, then insert them into a willing player corp.
Think of it like putting the press into combat units in Iraq.

The other team would probably have time to engage, kill, pod and make a cup of coffee while the reviewer is typing on the keyboard. Ooops, what happened? Im dead? How did that happen? I didnt see anything because i was looking at my keyboard! Cheaters!

I think that this summary is better than the 'preview': http://uk.pc.gamespy.com/pc/eve-online-the-path-to-kali/
The reviewer obviously has had no real gametime with EVE and it shows in the way he writes about it, putting it down with speculation rather than facts.
And banning 3rd party voice comms, is that even possible? Get me my T2 Tinfoil hat!

compared to other games, and its only considering pve here. We'll see very little benefit from voicechat when it comes to pve ratting and mining.

Geometry instancing. It's a DX10 feature, lets you put multiple copies of the same model into the world without overhead or something.
