Don't these silly scientists ever listen to the SciFi community. They are going to end us all!!!! |

I am seriously interested in this artificial retina idea. I have a 50-50 chance of developing macular degeneration when I'm older and like the possibility of something that could fix that. |

For medical reason, sure!... would be great. Just, some research scientist like to toy with things they shouldn't and that's when we get into trouble. Remember Robert Oppenheimer? He regretted ever meddling with the atom as he did when he realized the destructive power it held. |

I can't wait till we get Mind Machine Interface. Favorite fluff quote from a video game ever (OHGODSIDMEIER'SALPHACENTAURI).
Quote:I think, and my thoughts cross the barrier into the synapses of the machine - just as the good doctor intended. But what I cannot shake, and what hints at things to come, is that thoughts cross back. In my dreams the sensibility of the machine invades the periphery of my consciousness. Dark. Rigid. Cold. Alien. Evolution is at work here, but just what is evolving remains to be seen. |

My opinion: there is evidence that consciousness may be linked with "brain waves", the electrical ripples that wash over the surface of our brain. This is rather than consciousness just being the pattern of neurons firing. A machine or software could replicate the neurons firing or be made to handle information in the same way as neurons, but I suspect those brain waves are a property individual to real wet brains. I'm not saying you can't have true AI, but I suspect it'll be more than just some sort of self-learning expert system. |

Neurons are binary, their special quality is that they can randomly form connections with other neurons, and have evolved over many millenia to form random connections that eventually mean something. Even more special, a neuron firing with different neurons means different things, end result: because permutations matter, you have incredible amounts of space and processing power.
Real AI is most likely possible, we just haven't figured out a way to make it yet. Humans are not special snowflakes, nor is any other animal. |

Maybe, but this bring up an interesting question: Does a machine need consciouness to decide earth would be a better place if humanity was wiped out? |

A machine would never be able to make that decision - it doesn't have a frame of reference, just logic paths.
Therefore it wouldn't make a decision, it would arrive at a conclusion.
Its conclusion would be no different (in your context) than concluding that lions should be wiped out, or the great white shark.

A world with cyborgs, nanotechnology enhancing human performance and extending life, and sentient machines? SIGN ME UP!!!
But first I want some Deus EX-esque robotic arms grafted onto my body. Cameras and lasers in my ocular cavities too. |

That is certainly the view of those who think machine consciousness is possible.
There are, however, other views. And I don't mean views which stray into positing mind/body duality.
One such view is that it is a particular function of the wet brain that allows consciousness rather than the binary neuronal patterns.
(I may have misunderstood you, we're may be in agreement on most things here.) |

All of this reminds me of the AWESOMESAUCE RPG called
ECLIPSE PHASE
best damn sci-fi rpg in a looong looong time, bought it just to read it, awesome backstory and humanity fully mixed with pre-created bodies.
The reason I mention it, is because in the rpg and novels for ECLIPSE PHASE, humanity has managed to map the brain and convert it to digital data, thus converting personalities into software. Henceforth, you could inhabit several types of environments , even wholly virtual ones and death , physical one at least, was wiped for good.
The Singularity happened and now Mankind faces a new existence after it (several good plots like TITANS destroying earth, super advanced AIs that wholly mass uploaded sentient beings to lock them up for reasons unknown, aliens , relics and a whole bizarre universe to explore)
Hmmm, if any of you wants to read a nice sci-fi rpg setting, I reccomend u guys Eclipse Phase, the core book is gorgeous and THICK for mere 35$ ... here's the amazon link in case you interested.
Just awesome! Technology like this makes the mind go wild. |
