The idea is, to set a timer on secure cans, say a week or two. The timer gets activated when the can isn't being used, and resets when it's used again by the owner. When the timer finishes the can pops, that way the owner would need to scoop the can back and reuse it another place, and that way solve the can problem in high sec belts and reduce server side lag when warping into a heavy can infested belt. /signed. I'll bet there are cans out there that haven't been used in months. They take up the good can locations and lag everyone for nothing. Likewise with sign cans.
I'd rather see the cans unanchor themselves after a week or two of disuse, so that it's possible to salvage and reuse them. For the folks that mine and rat in high-sec, a 500k giant secure container is a very nice find.

Absolutely /signed.
Untouched secure cans should die dIe DiE DIE.
They're just a drag on the systems, and detract from overall game quality with their clutter. The fact that they are made from metals forged in the heart of a black hole is just ridiculous. I want my next ship built out of whatever they make secure cans out of.

Where is that said? Seriously because it is absurd. Yes, I know it is a game and lots of things are done in it that are absurd in the real world but still it's not hard to suspend disbelief and just go with it. However, metal forged in a black hole is way beyond that...it's about as impossible as impossible gets. I can think of several issues but the main one is NOTHING escapes a black hole...period.
That hijack aside I wholeheartedly agree with the OP. Anchored cans should unanchor after some time limit.
