I find it troubling, that regardless of who we are, or where we came from, we have little choice in the selection of the crews that maintain and conduct the menial tasks aboard all but our smallest starships.
For my own example, I find it somewhat troubling that the Amarr vessels I fly, out of convenience and appreciation for their artistry and superior design, always come equipped with a number of ignorant, unwashed Brutor slaves.
I do not want fodder that are little more useful than kindling for my fusion reactor, so as a consequence, I typically "free" my slaves, and offer them a reasonable wage considering where they came from. Their gratitude can be suprising, but I expected to leave behind my days of teaching in the Academy, but instead I find myself instructing my crews on everything from missile reloading procedures to basic hygene and recycling protocols.
I would take a crew of fine, upstanding Amarr freemen over these tragically ignorant beings, even if I had to pay more than my sponsors would provide on their own.

I hand-pick my crew, considering that I expect individuals that are competent, punctual, and self-motivated.
Fortunately, the Caldari State does not seem to have a shortage of individuals who would gladly trade a lifetime of drudgery for the excitement and brevity of an space-faring career.
My only complaint is that only my pod is equipped with an escape system...

I tend to gain some, and lose some, in every port I dock in.
It is easy to overlook, considering how little we capsule captains really pay attention to the people walking the decks of our larger ships.
For some of you, I imagine, it's especially easy to overlook the thousands of poor bastards that you've sent to a vacuum death every time you lose a Megathron to a losing gambit.

Let's get back on topic, before I link this thread to Ms. Ross's datafeed. Hell hath no fury like a woman with autocannons.
I do wish that it was easier to participate in the crew selection process. While the State pays for everything and most of us seem to forget they are even there, I wouldn't mind paying a few isk more for more competent staff.

Edited by: DeadRow on 30/05/2006 13:06:49 All crew on my smaller ships, from battlecruisers down, are normally hand picked by myself. Anything larger i normally choose the higher ranking officers as i dont have the time to look out for ~5000 people for every battleship I may come to use.

I've never had difficulty keeping good crew for my industrial vessels. Most are clansmen and kinfolk who are trustworthy and grateful for the opportunity.
It's a bit more difficult finding such people who are willing to serve on my combat vessels. I've had to recruit from many systems within the Republic. Contrary to the opinions of some I have found Brutors to be excellent crew. But that will come as no surprise to any captain who has not been darkened by the shadow of slavery.

I have to admire the Gallente, for their efficient use of drones and automation to cut down on human labor.
Unfortunately, I find their bad taste in starship architecture an unforgivable travesty.

Dear Benefactor,
Do not worry about our working forces. Do like I did, install the Caldari sprinkler system Wash'N'Go 5000. It won't affect the effiency of the slaves, but it will take away the stench. And to hear their shrieks of joy when the system is turned on is of course entertaining in itself. Perhaps I should install heaters for the waters as well?

I personally interview each and every potential recruit for my crewed vessels to ensure they are competant, understand what I will be using the ships for and work well as part of a crew team. Perhaps this is a luxury not often afforded outside of the Federation where people are free to apply for jobs as they wish and we are free to choose who fits the need..?

As a Minmatar flying Gallente ships in Caldari space, i don't usually have much choice in my crew.
As a result, I usually end up with the most rag-tag, unsruplous crew imaginable. Most would be considers a burden of the State if they didn't find employment on my ships.
This, of course, leads to all kinds of problems, like when the crewmen in charge of ammo desided he didn't want to reload the guns anymore because it was "against his religon." Of course, this was during a heated fight with Guristas forces. I would also mention he said he was an athiest before we started the flight.
Or the time the crew in charge of drone maintainence desided it would be "fun" if they reprogrammed the drones to vent their thrusters in all directions at once, leaving them completely imoblie. Of course, this would only happend when I commanded them to return to my drone bay while making a hastie retreat. I can't recall the correct number of drones lost like this, but it must be in the hundreds.
As of late I've been flying an Ishkur completely unmaned except for myself. It's a little lonely, but at least my repair bills are smaller. ________________

Installing sprinkler systems has been effective in dealing with some persistent sanitary issues with some of my crews. However, there is an unexpected consequence. It seems that the Brutors are unfamiliar with freely-available water, let alone the luxury of bathing. As a result, my hygene lessons are coming undone, and they wallow in filth, anticipating the next shower.
Brutors. Environment, or heredity? I'll leave that one to the scholars.

I have a close friend who employs as many Amar as possible, so that when he loses a ship he still feels the moral victory as he is the one on board with the pod.
Personally I do not take interest in my crew on a personal level. They are contracted through the Brutor Tribe to save me time and money on hiring and screenings. They work hard and are payed very well at the end of their contract. They are all made aware that there are many dangers involved in manning my vessels. Those that survive are well made men. Those that do not, ensure a sizable pension goes to their next of kin.

I also do not take too much of a personal notice of my crew, except for the few that somehow survive any ship explosions. Usually if they make it out alive I will put them in my hanger crew, unless they choose to serve on the ship again. _______________________________________________ I am the devil, and I'm here to do the devils work.

I confess this particular statement interested me enought to check out the details behind this "Wash'N'Go" system since it struck me as an odd thing for a Caldari Corp to be making.
After some research I thought to recommend a report of the retailer to the Caldari Buisness Tribunal but on further consideration that makes no sense. As customer satisfaction is indeed high, and what a customer does with an item* is not the responsibility of the manufacturer it seems that a good deal infact was struck.
I do recommend that you add Ishukone Mark IV-7B Induction heaters to your water lines. This will I believe produce a noticable increase in crew efficiency so long as the water temperature remains below 300 Kelvin. They can be purchaced at Penrigman VII Ishukone Station talk with the Manufacturing Agent there she will ably assist you.
*For those interested the system seems (I can not claim it is exactly this but it is the best match a DB search turned up) to be: W(iyrkomi)N(aval Sub System)G(eneral Purpose)-5000; Fire Fighting Equipment; Retartant Foam Dispenser Type.

It bothers me to no end that escape systems are non-existent on modern starships, apart from the cozy confines of our Jovian-tech capsules.
Even the Blood Raider scum I deal with on a regular basis deserve something better than vacuum death.

You are right - I merely used the retail name. And since you can use water instead of foam it can be refitted as I have. I thank you for the tip regarding the heater, I will definately install a couple of those to test the effects.
Thank you.

I select the officers and higher ranking crew of my ships. The lower ranking crewmembers only have temporal shop, usally only enlisting a short whiel and being replaced at a station. Exept for the people who were aboard when I moved to 0.0. They'v ebeen with me for over a month now, and some are complaining they originally enlisted for a month. I tell em thta if they don't like it, they can allways hop out of the airlock. Please resize image to a maximum of 400 x 120, and not exceeding 24000 bytes, ty - Cortes |

Office staff hires first mates, first mates hire crew. I try to limit contact to formal occasions - I find it distracting if there is too much emotional attachment to crew on board and I do not want to make a fatal mistake because of such distraction.
During my whole career, I have had to personally intervene on a crew matter only twice, and I hope to keep it that way.
Other people feel and function differently, and it is of course important that every pilot finds the way that is most effective for them. Just saying this as one example.

I'm amazed that in this day and age with the technology available to us in Computer Intelligence and Robotics, people still insist on having a life (humanoid) crew on board.
Only rarely do I have a humanoid crew. When I do, it are Freespace loyalists they know what they get themselves into. _

I hate to break it to you Matari, but those sophisticated AIs and Robots you speak of... they dont exist. When you lose a battleship, thousands die.
The closest attempt to success in that particular department is what we call the rogue drones, Im sure you want those running your ship.

My crews are made of cyborgs, human bodies implanted with advanced cybernetic systems. Deck crews are usually composed of Gallente or Caldari-type cyborgs, while the physical strenght of minmatar slaves coupled with body enhancements to improve their strenght comes in handy in the machinery and gunnery.

Edited by: Alaric Rurk on 01/06/2006 00:30:07 I've yet to hire a substantial crew. My impression is that they do not perform very complex functions. Instead, they do what some would call "grunt" work.
They must know the odds when they sign on. However, each time a bounty is collected and each time a mission is successfully completed, do they not collect a bounty or a reward of their own, one awarded on top of that given to the captain (and so not appearing in the captain's transaction's log)? They hope their families will become rich from this prize money before they lose their lives.
There seems to be no lack of supply of impovershed and minimally-skilled people willing to do this. Thus pod pilots tend to treat their crews as non-issues. |

On the rare occassions that I leave my capsule while on board my Industrial-class vessel, I find it somewhat difficult to interact with my crew. It is one thing to be the impersonal force within a shell of Jovian alloys and suspension fluid, and it is another to don a uniform and try to carry on a normal conversation.
One of my crew chiefs made a pass at me! A few seconds in a depressurized airlock a few hours later taught him some manners.
