I'm not getting much in the way of responses from Tech Support and I hope this is a simple issue.
I've been inactive for more than a year, and am not using the same computer I was using before.
Download and install seemed to work fine, but when I try to log in I get a message that I can't connect to the server. I did a complete remove and re-install first. Same thing.
My system uses an AMD FX 4300 CPU, and has 16 Gig of RAM, although most of that is wasted because my OS is Win XP Pro SP3. HDD is 1 Terabyte.
I tried disabling my firewalls and no joy.
I ran several anti-virus programs, no joy.
I can connect to anything I want to on the Internet.

Try the issues & workarounds forums. The launcher is riddled with problems for various users. Spybot and certain AV conflict with it. Best report there though and check for replies, or do a proper search

Right now I am trying to write a Modula-2 interface for Malbolge.

This looks more like a network issue - first test: copy the eve game folder to another computer and try logging in from there.
If you have the same issue go play with your router (if it is an option) or contact your ISP. Try resetting it, works wonders sometimes. "This is nothing more than a rumor with no basis of fact. Hope that's enough of a confirmation for you guys. :)" Coolstorybro |

Not so simple an edit unless you are used to working in the dark. But I did it and got the same message. "Can't connect to server."
One thing I should mention is that using this port resets my connection to Pandora Radio. At least that is the way it looks.
Another thing is that CCP suggested that I run 'tracert' on their IP address. I stripped everything down (Bypassed the switching hub and router.) and ran tracert on the address given. It timed out on every hop. Absolutely no successful connections. ??
The computer works fine. I'm listening to Nadia as we speak.

GNU: Modula-2, Prolog, Ada, Malbolge(PD) all cross-platform http://www.ubuntu.com/desktop Masochist? XP is dead, period. A huge security risk. An immanent hack. If you don't like the available compilers on Windows (who does?), then duel boot onto Linux and use the compilers there (I checked, they exist). If you refuse to even do that, then duel-boot into XP after pulling the network, play EVE on Win 7/8. Soon enough, if this isn't already the sign of it that you are experiencing, EVE won't even run on XP. And it's quite possible, that it's not working, because someone already hacked your system. You got a fix line or internet via a mobile device (USB, HDSPA/UMTS Broadband etc.) ?
I had some issues with my mobile device in the early days of the launcher. I guess it was ISP related. TunDraGon is recruiting! "Also, your boobs " -á CCP Eterne, 2012

I see I've left out several things.
Just to eliminate a few options.
1. I've DOD wiped my hard drive several times in the last few days, and done total rebuilds. I'm using AVG 2014. It is always installed just after the OS. 2. I installed Win 7 64, and it didn't make any difference except that I can't get my CPU usage down under 65% no matter which processes I shut down. With XP, CPU usage is at 0% most of the time. It also really messes up my audio, and still won't connect. 3. I've got the computer set to sync with the government time server every 24 hours now. My battery is good, so the clock should stay pretty close to the standard. 4. My Internet connection is DSL hardwired to the computer. There's a switch and a router between the DSL modem and the computer, but bypassing them has no effect. 5. I was wrong about the tracert results. There's an entry at the end that shows a connection to the server, but there are about 20 entries before that that show timeouts. 6. I can also ping the server with a 135 millisecond ping time. Pretty high, but . . . 7. I've run the Repair utility several times and it hasn't made any difference.
I burned ISOs of the most popular freeware Linux distributions earlier this evening, and added another hard drive to the computer. The problem with Linux is that I know absolutely nothing about it. I mean I tried Ubintu when Microsoft announced the end of support for XP, but I didn't even know how to run files. I used to be pretty good with DOS, but the command line interface to Linux is a LOT different, except that like DOS, it gives you the opportunity to do a lot of damage in a short time.
I'm going to try to set the second HD up with a Linux partition I can dual boot to, partly because it is a change I am going to have to make eventually. (I was so unhappy with Windows 8 that I shredded the installation CD.)
I started a thread in the Linux forum to see if I can get some advice on the easiest way to get ready to use Eve. Like which distribution is the easiest to set up for Eve. I also understand that most people who run Eve on Linux do it from inside of Wine. Is that the best choice? How hard is it for some who knows nothing about Linux to set up? |

Keep doing trace routs over time, periodically over a few days, collect your logs and contact you ISP tech support, provide your logs. Sometimes servers between you and your target server have problems. Your tech support will either contact the administrators of those servers and/or drop them from the rout if they can. Usually when they get contacted they will fix them though, which is what your ISP server admin will do.
I didn't suggest running EVE under linux, your editors and compilers yes, but that is totally fine if you want to, it should work. Definitely something to do rather than XP which is just really a no-no. Yes, under Wine, CCP dropped the linux native client, but they do make sure it runs under Wine as best they can, which is better than not at all like some other mmo. Choice in distro is up to you, but you will find distro's mentioned that will work for the linux forum here, find directions to install.
I know Ubuntu works, but as for the Ubuntu it has been changed a lot since you probably last used it. It's not hard to figure out, but you could install something like Enlightenment ontop of it (or other such environments) which you can find in the Ubuntu software browser located on the tool bar from install, or later if you just want something you are more used to. It should install just like grabbing something off of google play for an android, just installs right in. But then I don't know if that would complicate things if following instruction for installing EVE, maybe for something after, but it should be the same.
As for Windows running high on CPU, it's sometimes does that just after installing. It's building a search index of your hard drive/s. That can take days sometimes. |

It should be an adventure. My first two questions are: How do you get to the console? (So I can follow the steps in the Linux forum.) And "Where's Help"?
I didn't know that about the indexing service.

I didn't know that about the indexing service.
in that top left Ubuntu icon, open expand and browse for one. Not sure what was installed with Ubuntu, search for terminal, I have the Quake Terminal running (yes as in the FPS game) from the Ubuntu Software Center (icon in the menu bar there). Should be plenty of consoles/terminals to choose from there, but using search icon top-left there for terminal may find some installed already. Also you would find Wine there at the software center, just type wine in the software center search.
Indexing service, yes when you install windows, it'll use CPU as it builds an index for search. So if you let it run for however long, it may complete the index and stop loading the CPU. I think there was a setting to stop it... don't remember, it's on by default but best to let it complete. If you already have a lot of data for it to catalog, it could take a while, days even. |

Thanks a lot.
I've been in the Linux forum and there is a thread that tells exactly what to do for the Ubuntu/Wine setup, but most of it has to be done from the console. What I was thinking about was a Help system that tells basic things about navigation and things like that.
At the console can I use 'man {command}' to see what they do?

Yeah I guess, usually the manual is installed. I haven't used that in years. Most of the straight fwd info for starting up is from the community. Try this https://help.ubuntu.com/ Otherwise I use books, older printed and newer ebook/pdf form, run off my tablet while I work on things.

theres an xp mode in win 7 pro, its basically a win xp virtual machine. Windows 8 has hyperv support which also lets you crete virtual machines. and of course there is several virtual machine hosts that are free and paid where you can have win xp running on top of other o/s's just like any other program.

It's a modem reset. Not clearing the internal memory or anything like that. If there is a power outage, or something weird happens at the ISPs site, it may not disconnect you, but you really aren't connected either.
A modem reset forces a re-negotiation with the ISP's hardware.
My ISP is so bad that I've gotten into the habit of doing it as soon as I wake up in the morning. I may have to do it again one or more times during the day, but it's always the second thing my ISPs tech support asks. The first thing is always, "Is it plugged in?"
