"Warhammer" is elves n orcs n dragons n crap. "Warhammer 40,000" (generally called "40k") is space marines, chaos, eldar (evil space elvs), orcs with guns, tyranids, tau (pseudo-mecha-people), tanks, anti grav platforms, flame throwers, and all the other cool stuff that makes 40k teh sex.

A solid 40k MMO would be the only online game that could tear me away from EVE. If they ever make one, I'll need several new pairs of shorts. - - -

Originally by: Corunna ElMan If anything, Warcraft borrowed heavily from Warhammer. Obviously, both are heavily influenced by Tolkien and Moorcock, so comparisons are inevitable.
Tolkien a little, Moorcock I just dont see it. The old classic AD&D (1st ed) had may Elric inspired items and Corum for that matter. But I dont think any MMO has been directly infulenced by him.
All fantasy MMOs borrowed heavily from AD&D, well EQ did, and most borrowed heavily from EQ. The problem is none, not even DDO have gotten AD&D correct. I'm still waiting for the day someone gets it right...or even just close.

The whole "Law vs. Chaos" thing started with Moorcock. Chaos as a faction is a concept courtesy of Moorcock.
IMO, AD&D has always been "plain vanilla" fantasy and its settings seem to lack heart and soul and some quality that makes them unique. Eberron was a step in the right direction, but DDO still felt bland anyhow. Likewise with EQ.
WoW's setting is vibrant because it's not like D&D. Likewise with Warhammer. I think that's why D&D and "generic fantasy" games just don't do it for me. - - - - - "Never offend people with style when you can offend them with substance." - Sam Brown |

I saw this a few days ago, and after viewing it decided I would take this man at his word and try the game once it is eventually released.
I am however reminded of a comic a while back though. nullLinkage
And as for early influence... I have always preferred DnD as influenced by Robert Howard, who was a much better influence than Tolkein for heroic fantasy (not epic fantasy) in my opinion.

Dont ever use pennyarcade to prove a point.
Penny arcade is the worst web-comic out there, And you linking to it didnt help your point. Infact it made your point worse.
Pennyarcade = -10/10

And I'm not disagreeing with you about Moorcocks influence, I'm just saying he didnt directly influence any MMO's.
But he did, as both you and I can point out, influence AD&D. (As a matter of fact in the back of, I believe the DMG, Gygax gives credit to Michael and the Elric Saga as a direct influence. And I personally believe tjat the Drow are Gygaxs version of the MelnibonTians)
AD&D has influenced MMO's, take for example the dark elves in any MMO. They owe that popularity to Drizzt, who is an AD&D Drow. Wood Elves in MMO's are almost exact copies of the description in the AD&D manual. And for that matter, and for the most part, so are High Elves. Or take an easiser, and harder to refute (not that you'll try) example. The 4 iconic adventuring classes. Thats AD&D all the way, and copied in almost every S&S MMO/RPgame.
Ahh, vanilla is only plain when you've had it for...30 years now. (trust me when you dont sample vanilla for 10 years it tastes damn good and brings back memories when you do venture a taste)

I loved his description of Chaos : 'cut open your arm and mice come out instead of blood'
Although at the end he starts talking about imagination vs immersion.... sounds like his idea of imagination is a less lethal version of his defination of immersion. 'Eat, drink, talk and draw warhammer - just down let your house burn down.'

Thats what developers should all be like.
He's got a sense of humour and a passion.
"You dont realise your house is burning down and your wife has left you!"
"We're making a game that makes you wanna kick the crap out of people"
"The elves are like posh english people... on drugs!"
Brilliant.
Ill defo be checking it out when it "finally" gets there ;p
Edit: ANd yes World of Warcraft is basically entirely based upon Warhammer. Races and characteristics of those races and their attitudes etc. Its just Blizzard got the MMORPG out firstp ___________________________________

Originally by: Kurren Eh, it'll prolly wind up like every other MMO grinder out there... I can remember the big promises made by SOE... for every expansion and EQ2. I'm not too big on talk.
And, just because he doesn't have paper in front of him... doesn't mean the speach wasn't written out. Thats what you do with speaches... you practice them and memorize them so you talk to the crowd/camera and not the paper.
I hope it is good though. It'd be about time we got a good video game based on something with a solid history in Nerd-dom. Magic couldn't do it. D&D couldn't do it. WarHammer is probably the last chance dice, book, and card games have to become a good MMO. I won't play it. I just hope it doesn't suck.
Hey, you want a game based on a dice-and-paper RPG that doesn't suck? You're playing it! Ever hear of Traveller? ---------------------------------------------- "Violence is the last refuge of the incompetent." ---------------------------------------------- |
