Yeah. I know how that goes.
As a Linux and UNIX user, where the "man" command prints out manual pages, one learns the hard way that the online version of these manuals is not found by googling for "man pages".

Being female is the best form of piracy in EVE, I don't have to lift a finger... I have minions for that... Yarr!
Well.. thats not entirely true, I spend most of my time solo'ing missions until I can get into tech 2 cruisers... then I plan on finding a merc corp or something..

Hmmm. I have a friend who is researching the unusually high number of female players in WoW in the hopes of getting published in time for grad school. As he's going to be doing a contrasting game as well, I tried to get him to do one on EVE afterwards (because EVE rules, after all :)). So if its possible, I'm curious what sort of findings, if any, you make. Perhaps an EVE-mail?
Is this academic or just out of curosity, btw? Because at least if it is the former, some of the questions could use some definite work tbh.

After helping out a newbie, on my male character, in DAoC I was accused of being a woman hiding behind a male avatar because I was "too nice". WTF.
PS. I met my fiance in DAoC and she played Eve with me up to her death.

The reason EVE has so few female gamers is because they are all too busy p0wning guys in Counter Strike and Halo.
Linkage
I make cool banners for ISK.

Well this is a amusing looking thread, might as well throw in my voice.
1. How old are you and in what country (or continent) do you live?
I'm 29 and living in North Carolina, USA.
2. Do you tell people you're a woman?
Not especially, No. Of course if the subject comes up, I'll say the truth. The way I act tends to be a big give away. Heck, in EverQuest, I used to play male characters (Before the character revamp when Shadows of Luclin was released) just because I despised the way the female characters looked in that game (Back always arched, arms always held up, boobs sticking out, etc.) and every now and then I'll get a 'You're really a girl, aren't you?' just from the way I act.
3. Do you think people react differently to you because you're a woman?
Oh, definately. I've noticed the 'change' when people find out you're a girl tends to be entirely based off those people who talk in 'netspeak' and are (mentally at least) 10-15 years old. The 'mature' players tend to not really treat you any differently.
4. What part of Eve compells to you?
Oh, I s'pose it'd just be the open-ended gameplay. I've been playing Eve off and on since it's release. I was even in one of the beta phases. Just recently I finally came back, hopefully, for good. I'm still up in arms about the whole time-based skill-gain system. Call me weird, but even if it takes a long time... I do tend to prefer my actions in the game going to something a bit more than just my wallet.
5. Have any sex starved geeks tried to pick you up ingame?
I'll be honost. In my recent memory, I'd have to say.. Nope, not really. I could just be fortunate, or maybe it's because the only time I tend to be more open about my gender is in Corp/Guild chats has allowed me to definately avoid those kinds of interactions.
Or maybe it's just because I tend to come off as disdainful or such towards those who have a annoying and frustrating inability to use semi-proper grammer.
6. Anything more you want to say?
I've been a gamer for a *LONG* time. My first introduction to video gaming (Thanks to my brother) was a old Intelevision Home System. Though the true addiction started with a Nintendo and then a PC and then online gaming came along. MMOG's would have to be my favourite genre and I try to play them all. Especially ones that don't charge you for the CD's and game itself but just monthly. T'bad none that does these schemes tend to keep my attention for long.
What ya'll may find even more amusing is that I'm a avid FPS gamer. Wolfestein3D up to Half-Life 2. I've played all the 'best' and some of the 'bad' FPS's there are over the course of my life.
