Edited by: Valar on 13/06/2006 23:58:56 The database server is at 100% CPU and has been for an extended period of time. We are rebooting to do a failover that will hopefully make the database server go back to normal since its obviously not doing so on its own.

Its adapted from the phrase "fallen over."
As in "one of our servers fell over and has made things screwy but lets not tell the players."
And also from "failsafe".
As in "Don't worry we have a failsafe, PR."
As a result the Failover system is now in place. --------------

You know how even the most remote bodies in the universe exert their influence (gravity) on everything else in the universe? Same thing goes for the lag of the china cluster! it exerts lag! on the TQ cluster!!!11one

you know, if every person in China would jump at the same time, earth would get kicked out of the sun orbit into deep space
something similar happened here, they all logged onto the china server simultanoeusly, causing the internet to spasm and finally the orgasm happened on the tranquility server, which is now smoking one and will after that resume normal work

DISCLAIMER: This is NOT a whine.
Interesting that you must reboot to fail over.
I manage hundreds of database clusters, and dont need to do this. Why must you reboot the servers? Or do you use the term reboot to move resources to the inactive node(s)
I am curious from a technical point of view.
Thanks |

I think that might have meant rebooting the TQ cluster rather than the database behind it but I'm sure Valar will come and correct me. ______________________ 106 days and still a hijack virgin... Cherry popped! ~kieron

Yes, rebooting a cluster is usually not required. Thats why you have a cluster in the first place.
But I would love to learn more about CCP's technical infrastructure.
Do they publish any white papers or technical briefs about their setup?
As I mentioned, I manage several Datacenters in several cities. |

Sorry, should have explained myself better there. There are two clusters running EVE. There's the SQL cluster which is the one you're used to. Then there's TQ which is the cluster that runs all of the EVE code, loads the systems etc etc. I think what Valar was saying is that they rebooted the TQ cluster (effectively the EVE universe) in order to resolve a database issue. Rebooting TQ is what caused all of the players to get kicked off.
Edit: Going off to look for some linkage about their setup.
