IANAL, but that sounds a lot like copyright infringement. --- Our greatest glory is not in never failing, but in rising up every time we fail. - Emerson |

Originally by: Azerrad How about a free live streaming option, but have high quality versions of each fight available for download via bittorrent. This would keep things free, but would allow for high quality versions to be available without requiring a huge amount of bandwidth.
Just a thought.
Agreed. Bittorrent is the answer to large non-realtime video files.

Edited by: Rod Blaine on 15/06/2006 23:27:18 Get sponsors and get us free high Q, or go with low Q stream and high Q dl.
You could save the high quality streaming as premium service for the next tournament, when you might have had some time to think more about how to introduce premium services like that without them making us feel the hurt of actual premium services
Small hint for you devs: Think the length of february in a non-leap year.

Well, for what its worth. I think its pretty vital that WHATEVER way you broadcast it, the Shield/Armor/Hull stats are shown for each contestant. I really it might be hard to achieve, and it might mean less 'beauty shots' because of interface showing, but it makes the battles much more exciting to watch.
As for free/premium...Aslong as PayByCash works im a happy bunny.

Id pay for a live high quality stream, but i still feel there should be a low quality stream for those who dont want to pay so they arnt left out.

Free stream.
I would then capture the whole event and encode it at a high biterate and offer it for downloading for a price even... Sounds like a better idea? -=====-

Another approach: create a quick and dirty "playback-only" client and only transmit the server data. Bandwidth problems gone. Unrealistic in a reasonble timeframe, i know. ;) But a nice thing to keep in mind for future contests and recording eve events in general.

I vote for both. Also make sure you put up some sample of the high-def stream so people can decide if it's worth the extra money. $ 12 seems a bit much, 8 $ seems ok for me. Yes I like boobies.

Would you mind paying a price of around $8-12 to view a high-quality stream for the entire duration of the tournament? -I would but i'm assuming this will be yet another cc only option (urg, somtimes i think you hate non cc people) Would you rather have a low-quality stream for free? -i'd rather a high qual but no cc so i'm stuck with low quality Both? probably best Do you like boobies? -feck yes!! alliance wet t-shirt contest anyone? ------FD------

$8-12 USD sounds good. Free sounds better, i would probably pay for the HQ, abd LQ would work.
Boobies on the HQ might make more people pay for it.
Boobies for the Win.

As much as I love you guys, I wouldn't pay to see the tournament. Mainly because I'm poor enough paying for EVE. _________________________________________________________

I'd say streaming the information would be more useful than streaming video, as that's what people are interested in. Realtime ship shield/armor/structure stats and active EW effects (taken from the server) + Audio would make a pretty nice package as far as I'm concerned.
Then throw a torrent up after everything is over (either for the day or for everything) with high quality video.

I would like to see both, free lowres and paid HQ. Although the Receive-only Client version as a video player is a realy good idea for the future.
Two thumbs up for the whole thing. |

Chribba might be interested in the video thing, he did the eve-live system a while back. Obviously I can't speak for him though
I am interested, but have stepped down as a backup alternative to EveTV if they can't pull it off.
And tbh this idea of paying came as a suprise for me and I'm not that happy about it, I don't like it and I am pretty confident that it could be pulled off with high-quality for free using sponsored links if that is the problem.
So, if I have to chose one option I'm afraid it would be the low-quality for free since the idea of paying to view it doesn't really get me hooked.
And finally - "We could bring you a crappy low-quality stream, which would deliver bad picture/sound quality" - imo I think we managed to push out pretty good streams when experimenting with EVE-Live that didn't require 1MiB/s+ streams, but without a doubt the EveTV guys know what they are doing.
Would it be against the EULA if I paid for a high-quality stream which I then re-broadcast for free via my network?
We delivered some bloody good quality streams - even if a few of em involved Machariels mining and such ..
The "pay" thing, you're already going to squeeze more out with VOIP (while segregating the player base between "have's" and "have not's") ... common, CCP is better then that.
There is quality in CCP, and there is quality to be found among the customers. I am positive Chribba could implement a setup as he outlined.
I love to hear the answer on the EULA question.
Oh, and if you're going with a charged option ... make sure those without CREDITCARDS can also pay for it ^^ GTC's for instance.

I would wait until high quality downloads are available rather than paying to see it "live".
If I wanted live then I'd just travel there, no?

I don't see why anyone would need to watch it in real time? I live in New Zealand so I'll probably be asleep anyway .
I vote for the highest quality stream CCP can offer for free, with a super high quality HDTV 500meg download later...

Cant do both? I'm interested in free lower quality streaming myself, but I'm wondering if there's enough interest to make the high quality pay per view worth implementing.
And boobies rock.

Edited by: Doc Brown on 16/06/2006 03:53:04 I won't pay extra to see the fights for the following reasons:
1) A video feed isn't the same as seeing the fight from the Eve game and being able to adjust view, look at target, etc. 2) Too much money when I can probably find somebody who taped their fight and put it up for download. 3) Honestly, I have doubts in the ability to deliver a high-rez (800x600 at least) video feed at 30 frames per second. _________________________________________________

My .02 iskies:
1. I would pay $8-12 USD IF that is the amount for the whole week of fights and if that includes access to some sort of downloadable video later so that I could study the tactics for next year (Sun Tzu).
2. Is there anyway to have them be broadcast in some sort of "eve-like" engine or downloadable format that allows you to do some sort of zooming and camera rotation like we can do ingame? This would be awesome, especially if this same tool could be used on the downloadable content (if any were offered later).
3. Any chance you could maybe have a raffle for "Guest DJs" during the fight? Personally I think it would be awesome to have just your regular Eve-players have a chance to maybe have their voices broadcasting a match during the PVP tourney. This could be another way to raise money for it and maybe lower the cost of the connection.
4. Can you have an audio only stream for those of us who have really low speed connections at work or for streaming to an Ipod or things of that nature?
Thanks bunches and this sounds awesome!!!! I cannot wait to see it and see who pwns and who goes home. |
