friends, people to help you out, easier to form gangs to help with missions, better support to buy gear, etc.

From a PvP perspective, the more friends you have the more force you can generally project on an opponent. Its hard to solo a half a dozen BSs , but if you have an equally powerful force its a possibility.

No, there are no advantages
Firstly, you wont have someone bossing you about :) You can decide what you want to do - do you want to mine today? If so do you want the mining op now, later on etc?
You can define what areas of space the corp will operate in, and who joins - you can control who you associate with, who you enemies are and who your friends are.
Obviously the down side is, you need to be dedicated, 110%. It's not just your game you're influencing, it's all of the members, so if you **** up, it's them that pay for it, and they might not be happy :)

Starting a corp give you a warm fuzzy feeling if it all goes well, always fun to have more people to talk too.
Whether you pvp, mine, mission run, pirate, trade or whatever it's great to get a group of you together and try to achieve stuff, little or large, corps are one of the things that makes Eve great.
If no one started new corps we'd end up with only about 10 vast player ones.

There is 1 really huge perk, the Corp Tax. when anyone kills a ship a percent of the ship's bounty goes to the corp. pocket some of this cash periodically...

here's a shortlist (I'll prolly forget a few);
pros:
- you get to choose who's in your chatwindow - you can profile yourself and your corpmates towards others, so they will know you're a pirate/miner/producer/hauler - it's the startingpoint from where you will be conquering the universe.
cons;
- you're now a possible wartarget, vulnerable to wardecs from griefers/noob mercs. - it costs money - it costs time - you need to train skills for it - you lose your chatwindow with a lot of other people to joke around with (although that can be a good thing).
The good things about being in a corp is numerous, but starting one of your own as a new player isn't the smartest thing to do. You make yourself vulnerable to attacks and you don't learn a lot. JOINING and already existing (and flourishing) corp is a good thing. You make new friends, you'll advance faster into the game as they can help you with tips, fittings, ships, alliances and experience.
This isn't WOW, starting your own corp is a business venture here, with all it's drawbacks and problems. Besides, you'll need friends to advance into the gameworld.
