The only real customization of ships in EVE beyond modules is the naming of your ship. This also has tactical repercussions and I wanted to share my experiences and get some feedback.
*Leaving you ship's default name:
By default your ship will be named "Character name"'s "Ship class name". Example: Yonos' Caldari Shuttle. I find that this is the worst you can do for a name because it connects you to the ship when people scan you. If there are several people in local they can size up your approximate abilities by your start date in EVE (by reading your bio). Leave your name on the ship only if you leave the ship somewhere, like in a POS or corphanger, and you want to make it clear whose ship it is.
*Changing name to something cute/funny/etc.
I love reading good names for ships, its nice to see how creative some people are. My zealot is named "Squirrel Nipples IV" because this one time I was forced to mooch off my neighbors wireless signal with my laptop. I was sitting so still playing that a squirrel came up to me and stood up on its hind legs. I counted its nipples (6 of them) and told my corpmates in chat. A legend was born......anyway I digress. Funny names are cool, but have no tactical bearing beyond it not being your default ship name.
*Deception:
This is where the tactical issues present themselves. As I see it you have several options, always keep in mind the scanner will always show the ship name AND type. The type cannot be changed:
1. Don't put a name down, nothing readable anyway. You must put down 3 characters, so something like ... or ___. This would deny them from seeing any ship name on scanner or your name. Course they can see the ship type. 2. Change the name but not the ship type. Doing this could throw people off who scan you, especially in group pvp, and expect to call "Yonos' Blackbird" primary but turns out the blackbird pilot is someone else. Might buy you a couple of seconds or more. 3. Change name of the ship to some other ship type or in the same class but keep your name on it. For example, I fly around in my Hound stealth bomber but it is named Yonos' Breacher, the t1 ship the Hound (t2) is based on. This could lead a less experienced player to believer you were less of a threat. The oppositie is true. I had a corpmate shy away from a caracal that was named "Navy Issue Caracal" but turned out it was not faction. This is especially potent strategy (either way you choose, play harmless or potent)if they have ship names on overview. Even experienced players can get confused sometimes.
*Ship names for shared ships: At POS's or in corphangers you would want to label ships "Don't touch" or "Corp Use Only".
*Taunting: You can rename shuttles and leave them in safespots in your enemies homesystems. Like "So-and-so" sucks ***. Etc.
The thing with the tactics of ship naming...is that you will probably never know that you tricked your opponent. But like the example I cited earlier with the "Navy Issue" caracal, in a tiny number of engagements it might make a difference, especially with less experienced players.

As a Newbie, I always ended up naming my ship after other ships. My Merlin was a Hawk for awhile, and a Harpy. My Caracal was a Raven, my Worm was a Merlin though, and my Harpy was a Worm.

I used to give my ships names like Serpentis Defender or downgrade my t2 ships name into its t1 variant. However scanner can be setup to completly ignore ships names and just give you what matters easily, now I give my ships real names like wearbear, twinkle, pep gum its fun and makes the ship that little bit more special. -------------------------------

forget one thing, under the deception category. I've seen people name their ships "Asteroid (Veldspar)" or "Cargo Container", etc. I tried that for a bit, but I find the other deception methods more appealing. This is supposed to sorta camoflauge your ship, but pvprs don't have those kind of things on their overview so you appear only more conspicous.
yeah, I like just naming my ships funny things personally too. Like I said, tactically it't not uber or anything, but in a few engagements with less experienced players, and a little luck, it just might make a difference.

Well, I've never thought of any of the actual combat uses, so I took my ship names from various sci-fi universes.
Thorax = Qwarr-Jet (need to have played homeworld, and why the hell can't I have quad heavy ion cannons?) Prophecy = Invisible Truth (Operation Serpeant, Comstar, Battletech, think if you've read) Heron w/ Scan probe launcher = Fiirkan (scout from homeworld) Vexor = Satzjager (german for 'pack hunter', lotsa' drones)
etc....

@Dahak2150
Satzjager is not the correct german word for pack hunter.
A pack is called 'Rudel' in german. In example: wolf pack = Wolfsrudel
So Rudeljager would be a better name for your Vexor.

This one time, in some lowsec my ship got popped but I escaped in pod to safespot. Then I put my killers name in place of mine in the default pod name.
I have been thinking about fooling around names more. For example if in system is some HC veteran you name your ship after him and easy pray looking pirate may think twice when he sees you in scanner. This goes other way too.
