Personally its finding some poor sod in a belt, beating him down and opening a convo, offering a ransom, and going from there. Thats always how I've done it.
Other people will tell you its ganking on gates or whateve, but I think that just falls under a sub-form of PvP when people are sniping gates etc. Camping gates solo within Sentry range and tackling your bait is a little more skillful though.
IMO, just the first 2 lines of this post, in any form. Ransoming a corporation so you dont war dec them etc. Its all piracy if your demanding it to let them live.

The dictionary says:
Quote: pi+ra+cy n. pl. pi+ra+cies
1. 1. Robbery committed at sea. 2. A similar act of robbery, as the hijacking of an airplane. 2. The unauthorized use or reproduction of copyrighted or patented material: software piracy. 3. The operation of an unlicensed, illegal radio or television station.
I guess we can exclude numbers 2 and 3.
Leaves us with option 1. We are definitely with the second paragraph of option one, as no ship around here sails the seven oceans.
So we are basically down to a robbery commited against a ship in flight.
Now for Robbery:
Quote: The act or an instance of unlawfully taking the property of another by the use of violence or intimidation.
So we have 3 criteria:
- unlawfully - which it is, sanctioned by concord with security status loss and finally outlaw state. (0.0 can only be pirates if the territory is claimed by an authority (a.k.a. alliance) who considers these souls pirates ) - taking the property of another - okay, so it is piracy when you intend to either blow his ship apart and take his modules or to get his money. - by the use of violence or intimidation - yep, either you blow his ship apart which is clearly violence or you make a few scratches to his hull and try to intimidate him enough to pay you for his survival.
So when you just go out there to blast someone just for the fun of it, this is not piracy. =================================

Actualy option one defines eve piracy perfectly ..just replace sea with space :P

PvP'ing for profit = piracy. If you try to earn a living through killing other people or ransoming them, then you are a pirate. Even though most pirates end up needed some other form of income.
Anybody who almost exclusively earns their income from npc'ing/mining, agent whoring etc, and does some PvP with that money is probably not a pirate, but of course there are exceptions.

1. Get the biggest most powerfully modded ship 2. Find The weakest possible target in .4 and destroy it 3. Dock and relogin with alt 4. Post killmail to your favorite killboards 5. Swing epeen on EVE forums 6. Rinse/repeat.
I make cool banners for ISK.

Not too far from the truth. But you forget those that want to teach people the art of engagement and that players drop the best loot - and pay ransoms for their ship/pod.

Pirates ransom and offer tolls.
If you just shoot people because they aren't blue then you're probably just 0.0 defence and i don't see that as piracy...

A Pirate is someone who kills people in low sec space. Period. Whether its gank/snipe/gatecamp/belt hop. Doesn't matter. Kill in low sec space = piracy. =============================================== Don't say to me over a forum what you wouldn't say to my face. |

Something thats lacking in eve is ship piracy where you tell the pilot to eject and you take his ship with fittings/cargo as your loot.
Real pirates do exactly that... they board...loot...ransom passengers and often will take the vessel and add it to their fleet.
Problem with eve is that once you eject you forfiet insurance so I doubt any pilot would ever do this. Maybe if they had implants (real expensive ones) you could convince them... but probably not.

Piracy in EVE, is defined as blowing away someone who doesn't have it coming.

Piracy in eve is making isk at another expense
Podkilling noobs/shuttles/idiots whatever all comes under the description of piracy if your doing it for possible gains.... Though I guesse you could say killing because you want too is also piracy ? Where pirates nice people, I think not.
And whats with the pirates all want to just inflate theyre e-peen. Ive been an outlaw for over a year, And cannot stand killboards and refuse to use them.
If you want to know how many of each ship ive lost just look at the number assigned to my ship name, am currently on Arraballus the 7th or something (Armageddon)

To me, piracy is the intention, not the method.
Griefing is to ruin a friendly game, which Eve is not. |

I think what everyone is trying to say is that indiscriminate killing is not piracy. It's murder. Being a pirate means getting money from either ransom or modules to sell.
That said, seems there are a lot of people who agree with me on this point. But if you all are the ransoming type, why do I have such a bad rep just for having low security? The answer of course is that +95% of people calling themselves pirates are just greifers... Blow the guy up, don't offer ransom, don't take his mods... but maybe blow his mods up too... just so he can't have them. And if he's a miner, blow up his ore for good measure... that'll show him how tough you are.
