Edited by: Anscar on 28/06/2006 20:52:35 I'm only on the 7th day of the trial and am concerned that my original character creation might limit me later on. I can find lots of discussion in these forums on "skill builds," but little on how to plan out your original creation. Maybe, I'm just not in-putting the right search terms....don't know.
When I started playing, I decided to go for a combat type, so I picked a Caldari Civere, and made the various choices sort of intuitively because I knew exactly nothing about EVE. I ended up with a character who was low in Intelligence, Memory, and Charisma, and high in Perception and Willpower. This is what I have at the moment:
Int 10, Per 9, Char 6, WP 12, Mem 11. I've got 155,946 sp (75,564 in Learning). Currently, Analytical Mind is Level 3 (in process of training to 4), Instant Recall is Level 4, and Memory is Level 3. Caldari and Minmatar Frigate are both at Level 3, and all other skills are at Level 2.
My primary ship is a Minmatar Rifter (two standard missile launchers, one 250mm Artillery, one 75mm Scout Railgun (almost useless, got it for free put it there just to fill the slot at the power and cap I had left), 1mn AB, Shield Booster 1. I do all my combat from as far away as possible.
My build strategy has been a mix between emphasis on Learning and picking up Level 2 in various skills that enhance combat. I didn't want to put everything into Learning initially because I actually wanted to play the game....and, for me, that means doing missions.
My question: Is my character OK for the long hull.....or would I be better off starting a new character now (I don't relish starting a new character after I've put several million sp's into this one)?
Thanks for any information.

Basically, doctrine is to have your Perception and Intelligence highest, Willpower and Memory in the middle, and Charisma the lowest. Taking the skill path that gets you your racial frigate skill to level four gives you the most skill points (except for the new bloodlines that can get some skill to level five).
There's no REAL focus on exact builds because attributes determine nothing but skill training time, and starting skills are so quick and easy to get later.

No matter what you plan to do in Eve later, always choose the Scientist/Builder options, as they give you the best attributes...

That sounds good for a combat character. You might want to look for Neckbone's Rifter fittings though.
This is the first character I rolled when I started the game, before I fully understood the skill system, and I've not regretted it.

It's looks like I'm not too bad off. Seems I started way too high in WP and too low in Int and Mem. I'd like to speed up training; I mean I'm looking at more than 8 days to train Instant Recall to level 5 (something I'm not planning to do till way down the road, if ever). Thanks for the replies.

I got all of my learning skills up to 4-5 and it's done me very well so far.But be warned it takes a while and gets a bit tedious. The rewards are worth it in lower skill training times.

If you plan to stay a long time (say years) then it would be adviced to get your advanced learning skills. If you only plan for a few months then the normal learning skills to lvl 4 should suffice. They take some time to train, but they pay of with this lost time over time. Also there aren't prebuild character sets in the game since there is no limit to what skill you want to train.

Your abilities look fine, there's no such thing as too high in willpower or too low in memory (well not at the levels you've got them anyway). There is no 'this character/race/ship/setup is best' in Eve and you can always use learning skills and implants to improve your abilities.
Level 5 skills take a long time to train, get used to it. 8 days for Instant Recall 5 sounds about right. Gallente Cruiser 5 is taking me 22 days.
