So... i am preparing an article, and need some survey results. This survey is only for people currently playing without sound and that are at least 6 months into the game. Please do not reply if you are not in the above category, and please, no discussion of pro/against sound.
Questions:
1. How long have you been playing without sound? 2. What prompted you to turn sound off? 3. What were your computer specs when you turned sound off? (general specs, like P3, 512 RAM) 4. Did you upgrade your computer since you started playing EvE without sound?
Thank you for your time
p.s. no names will be used. You can post with an alt if you want even further privacy.

1) Since a sound bug caused crashes when uisng a certain module (think it was sensor damps, somebody should be able to confirm the date it's over 2 years ago iirc) 2) see above 3) 4 months old 4) yep |

I have a 2.8 gzh and played with sound a few months only. I turn it on when doing AFK jumps or when waiting for a skill to complete.

1. Since sometime in my first few weeks. 2. I had my own music, and while the in-game music is good, it gets boring after a while. 3. A few years. (P4, 2.4Ghz) 4. Yes.

No sound here. Been in game 6 months.
1) Played without sound four months now. 2) Poor sound effects and the sorry condition of the EVE sound engine forced me to turn off sound. The sound engine is extremely CPU dependent and poorly coded. Also, it's going on three years old. It's due for an upgrade that takes better advantage of current audio technologies. 3) AMD Athlon 2600+, 1GB RAM, Turtle Beach sound card 4) No upgrade as yet. My next upgrade is scheduled for August this year.

Edited by: Talori''i on 29/06/2006 17:32:28 1. Probably after my first month of playing. 2. Warp Sound was not allowing me to listen to my music, I lowered the volume and I couldn't hear anything but the warp sound. A few other sounds can be a bit on the loud side too. I like to hear my music and play the game its difficult though. Sound isn't exactly necessary for EVE unless you don't want to watch the screen the entire time. And running without sound allows me to run two clients. 3. P4 3.0 GHZ 1GB RAM, 9800XT, Audigy2 Dell-OEM 4. No
I am like 5 months and like 10 months into the game I think.

1. Longer than I can remember, which generally means more than a week. In this case, however, I think it's over 2 years...
2. The sound of me warping, while blowing out my speakers, initially. After having turned it on a few times, the new voices made me turn it off again.
3. AMD XP 1800MHz, 512mb ram, Soundblaster Live, GeForce 4 TI4600.
4. Yes. Still turned off!

1) since my first month 2) wanted to listen to internet radio 3) Barton 3200+, Geforce 5900 ultra, 1gb Ram, Audigy 2 4) yeah went to a 6800 ultra.
I didn't disable audio for speed, it never gave me a problem. but there are no audio clues that give you an advantage by having it enabled so I like to listen to the radio instead

1. Near when I started EVE. I then played with it on for about 6 months and then turned it off again.
2. It doesn't really add much to the game, you don't need it to play and I'd rather listen to music/Teamspeak/nothing.

1. I turned my sound off about 4 months into the game. I only ever use it occassionally now when I'm gatecamping while browsing the forums and need to hear activations.
2. I prefer my music library to Eve's (although some of the tracks are on my winamp playlist), in addition to the fact that sounds just get in the way of TS and also reduce performance.
4. AMD64 3200+ laptop, 1gb ram
5. Switched from lower-performance desktop to laptop

2. Someone told me it decresed lag/increased FPS. I found this to be true. Also, sound is for the most part just a distraction in pvp, since every bit of information conveyed by it is also readily available on the UI. Also, it distract from Teamspeak.
3. Similar to what I have now. Athlon XP 3400+, 1gb DDR400 RAM, Radeon 9800 pro,
4. I added an Audigy 5.1 soundcard. I still play without sound because I'm used to it by now, and when I turn it on during pvp it tends to disrupt my concentration (damn targeting sounds are scary!).

4) Yes upgraded.. tried sound... same unplayable lagg in ds complexes while running 2 accounts.

1. Since about 2 weeks after I started playing
2. I love my music and Nightwish > anything sound-related in Eve (no offense ). I tried playing around with leaving the sfx on while turning the ingame music off but it caused my music to change volume whenever stuff activated/deactivated which annoys me. Plus warping and laser beams give me a headache . Though I turn the fx back on once in a while when I'm doing guristas missions once in a while cuz it's funny to hear the constant missile explosions. That gets old after about 10 minutes too though and i turn it back off.

The other thing is that if I'm not using TS / Vent, I'm listing to eve-radio, and I can't think of any other reason to have the sound on. _____________________________ Nukem from orbit... It's the only way to be sure. |

I play the game WITH sound, never had any problems with it. Yes I use TS, yes I listen to eve-radio at times. I might turn the volume of the game down to almost backgroundlevel. But playing without sound just feels wrong.

I turned it off day one, turned it on to hear what all the ppl complained about with the new voice, turned it back off...
I play on 4 systems... they range from a laptop to an alienware beast.

1) I think I'm about 1 and 5, so probably no sound for a year and 3 months. I occasionally put the sound back on but it never stays on.
2) I tried running 2 clients at once way back in the day and was told to turn both clients' sound off. Sadly it didn't help cos my pc was too crap... I kept it off I think to avoid the evil OMGWARPWHOOOOSHRAWRZOOM sound which deafened me and would always stay super loud regardless of what I did with the sound settings. I never knew what the problems with the sexy/stoned chick voices were as I never heard them
3) Same as present - P4 2.5Ghz ; nVid MX420 graphics ; On-board sound, no idea of codecs or owt... AC97? , and a mighty 512Mb of RAM (Yeah I need to upgrade, see below)

playing since early-mid 04, had no sound since early mid 04, FPS increase and weird noises (also unbalanced sound lvls, warp noise, AI voice etc). Had a P4 1.8, 1.5 gig ram, FX5200 128mb, soundblaster live. Upgraded to a decent lappy and still don't use sound and i don't miss it, tried to play with sound and it annoyed me, so i turned it off.

1. Turned it off after two weeks playing 2. sloppy computer performance 3. Athlon 1800+, 512 ram and 9800 pro 4. added some extra memory soo nice for eve
The sound is not soo imersive in eve and when you play with TS, it is better to turn it off. Sometime i turn it on again but then again i don' miss it. Beside in space you are not supposed to hear noises in your capsule?

1. one year (since i started playing)
2. lag when entering mission deadspaces, imposibility to just listen to the music (which i love) but turn off sound effects (specially explosions, incoming missiles and weapons firing). its either all or nothing.
3. P4 3066, 1024 mb, ATI Mobility Radeon 9000, Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS
4. no, but i upgraded some drivers, and recently i tried turning sound on again, but i only lasted 10 minutes, just until i entered the first deadspace and my screen froze during 40 seconds while the speakers went mad with laser sounds.

1. I turned off sound, not long after I started playing. I often forget there are sound effects. 2. Didn't like the music, didn't like the sound effects. The few sounds that were useful (autopilot, combat, mainly for when I wasn't actually paying attention) weren't useful enough to make up for the annoyance of the other sounds (like the warp sound). 3. AMD Duron 950mhz, 512mb RAM. 4. Yes, (a few months ago) I now have a Pentium 2.0ghz, 512mb RAM (a friend gave me their old comp). |

4. Did you upgrade your computer since you started playing EvE without sound? Only the motherboard and power supply when last ones blew up. High quality power supply purchased, and better motherboard. No change at all to quality with/without sound.

1. How long have you been playing without sound?
since it started and played just after beta
2. What prompted you to turn sound off?
Eve crashes otherwise it takes up about 90% CPU with sound on. No matter what posts have been put up CCP don't seem capable of releasing a patch that allows me to play with sound
3. What were your computer specs when you turned sound off? (general specs, like P3, 512 RAM)
1GB RAM: 35GB Sata drive: Radion 9800pro: 3.7 GHz chip: Motherboard: motherboard default sound (AC somehting...)
Oh and before you all flame me - NO other, let me just repeat that - NO OTHER game has or causes this problem with this set up
4. Did you upgrade your computer since you started playing EvE without sound?

4: Upgrade: several times. 939athlon, PCI-e Mobo, 2gb ram, Geforce7900Gt OC... same cambridge soundworks speakers, same awful music

1. At least six months now. 2. Irritating warp sound and reduced lag in fleet fights. Gets in the way of voice comms. 3. AMD 1900XP 512 Mb Ram GeForce3 4. In the process of doing it now. Will not know until the new box is up and running. Most likely sound will stay off to keep voice channels clear.

1) Almost since the beginning 2) a) Teamspeak microphone picks up speaker sound, I don't like having game audio through my headphones b) got bored of the sound, same warping noise (very annoying). Liked a few of the songs though c) Wanted to listen to own music. d) Sometimes I run two clients
3) AMD Athlon XP 2400, 1024MB Ram. Sound caused no lag problems or performance problems
4) Nope

1. Bout 9-10 months 2. a) Anoyying warp sound that would make anything else been played inaudible. b) Limited selection of tracks in juke box, that I felt didn't really fit the mood of the game in the first place. c) No actual sounds that provided any extra information, such as in an fps where gun fire comes from the left or the right. d) Other better audio around, ie eve radio 3. Athalon XP 2600, Gig of ram, Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS 4. Yes

Edited by: Demangel on 02/07/2006 08:27:54 1: I play with with sound both off and on. And have been doing so since nearly day 1. 2: When I do have turned off there are plenty of reasons, and most of them arn't because of system limitiations 2 of the biggest ones are: A: PVP - any time PVP is a real (not just possible) probability, I have sound off to give me a few extra miliseconds less lag. Even on a perfect system this would be a good idea (as well as turning off all effects). B: Anytime I have Teamspeak open, the sound of the game interferes too much with the people speaking. 3: P3 (1.6 ghz - I know stone age at this point), 512 ram, Geforce 6600GT Video, SB sound card (think it's platinum?), Currently using USB headphones and mic, which bypasses/overrides the sound card anyway. 4: No.
Galaxion > If you drove a car shaped like a thorax women would call you Demangel > Dude... I would call.. Demangel > wait that sounded g@y I bet. Galaxion > Just a bit.

1. About a year. 2. Client lag. 3. AMD XP 1900, 768-MB DDR266, ATI Radeon 8500 64-MB, integrated c-media sound. 4. Yes, but have not turned sound back on.

1. Within two months of starting
2. a) When playing two characters simultaneously, having sound on even one of them causes both to lose framerate and responsiveness (no problem with Winamp in the background though). b) Reduce lag in big battles c) Hear ppl on ventrilo
3. Athlon64 3800+, 2GB RAM, X850XT, 2x250GB SATA drives, Creative Audigy2ZS
4. bigger disks
Incidentally I still turn it back on from time to time, for old time's sake (and if none of the conditions in (2) are met). But it's 99% off.

Well, I'm over 6 months and I USED to play without sounds. Does that count? You see, my speakers broke 4 months ago, and every time I'd turn them on they'd just let out an unholy screch. And because I was too chepa to buy ne wones, I played without sound for 3 months. Then I upgraded my entire computer because the old one was really crappy, and bought new speakers while I was at it. 1. ~8 months (but I still occasionally turn music on since I like the soundtrack) 2. I had frequent BSODs, which I later pinpointed to my USB-headset, tho. And to keep wifey happy with quieter play :). Oh, and warp sound. 3. P4 3GHz, 1024MB RAM 4. Nope.

Edited by: Yaman on 23/07/2006 23:24:40 All anyone and everyone needs to know is that the weapon sounds in EVE are the weakest part about the whole visual/audio gameplay experience.
The soundtrack is awesome - and I'd listen to it more but the annoying weapon sounds are hurting my ears and disrupting the beatiful music.
EVE's graphics and soundtrack is so wonderful it's sad that the weapon sounds are lacking so much. I'm also certain it's one of the main things that have held EVE's ratings back among various gaming magazines.
Who knows maybe someone important in the company made the sounds and no one is challenging them...but I'm sorry. Whatever "sound engineer" made the weapon sound effects for EVE should think of a new profession. They are without a doubt the worst sound effects I've ever heard in a video game. I mean early 90's games had better sound.
-- anyone have replacement sounds?

1. 9 months or so, only had it on for the first few days 2. Performance is AWFULL with it on (Would like the sound ques but the performance hit isn't worth it) 3. AMD XP 2600 Mobile with 1.5 GB Ram 4. Added more Ram and OC'ed the CPU some more
PS: comment: actually listens to the eve sound in foobar while I play - it adds to the atmospehere of the game, but the ingame sound system is in absolute shambles
