I'm new to all this pirate stuff, so in need of a bit of help.
Could anyone suggest a good setup for a solo Merlin, Caracal or Ferox?
I've already lost a Caracal (to an elite frig) and a Ferox (to a cruiser that jammed and nossed the hell out of me).
Would like to see some good suggestions

Those ships are all rubish for solo pirating, train to use a stabber or thorax then use the search option in forums to help set one up.

The caracal is in fact awsome for solo pirating. Especially if you are after elite frigs. Make yourself an assault launcher setup with a passive tank. ----------------------------------------
Hello "pirates"! Pillage and blow up stuff = PIRATE! Ask strangers for money = BEGGAR!

Edited by: Gabby05 on 01/07/2006 13:40:13 Think caracal has a bad capacitor anyways the post i read involved 2 large extenders and t2 heavy launchers i dont think 2 large extenders could compete against other plated cruisers but to add to that id fill the lows with RCU's (PDU if you can spare) a small cap booster and mwd and take off an extender and replace it with a painter/web.
Most if not all cruisers you can rely on having close range setups even frigates with ac's/pulses/blasters cant do much damage to you unless their within 5km's. Just dont take on vexors or arby's, iskurs could be a problem if you dont have a web. You can try it on a few bc's just remember if they use missiles warp out.
Absolutly no reason you should be losing to a frigate tech 2 or not.

I've only ever used active shield tanking on Caldari.
Cheers
Edit: It was one of those blasted Gal drone carrier elite frigs, I lasted a whole minute

2 large shield extenders = passive tank :)

I just started using the Caracal recently, and a setup I'm working towards looks like this:
Hi - 4x named (likely Arbalest) Heavy Missile launchers, 1x Medium Kinetic Smartbomb
Med - 2x Medium Shield Extender, 1x named AB (forget which it is, but it uses about half the cap of the t1 AB), 1x Target Painter, 1x Multispectral Jammer
Low - 2x RCU
The setup is designed for ratting and light pvp (anti-ore thieves and macros, or corporation tournaments mostly). Obviously not as viable a pirating setup due to the lack of a warp scrambler, but the proton smartbomb should fit in any case because you could take out drones or small close-in frigates with it. Also, I haven't checked to see if it has a dronebay, but if it does, take full advantage of it and outfit some light scout drones to deal with any drones or frigates that come your way.
Beyond that, this setup can dish out some decent damage at long ranges with just the 4 launchers. Can pop off a heavy missile every 3.5 seconds with my skills, which are quite basic. With training in missile launcher operation and rapid fire, you should be able to shoot even faster. (And a balistic control unit always helps, but the Caracal doesn't have much in the way of powergrid and CPU to fit all the listed modules so the RCUs are necessary. Ferox should be able to fit one though.)

If you do want to try out the Merlin for pirating, I've actually been far more successful with it than with other frigs (although I haven't tried the Punisher properly yet, and I suspect it would be better). Try the following setup (bearing in mind you're screwed if you get webbed, but most frigs are):
High: 2 x light ion blasters, 2 x rocket launchers Meds: 1MN MWD, 7.5km scram, web, passive hardener (I use EM) Low: Magnetic field stablizer, Damage control
If you can't orbit fast enough to avoid being hit, you should be able to take quite a bit of damage, because you'll have good all-round resists. And you should be dealing fairly good damage as well. ---------------------------

I really hope that 3.5 seconds is a typo, or I'm doing something horribly wrong.

You'll notice "a" is singular.
Cycle is about 14 seconds. 14/4=3.5 I turn one missile launcher on every 3-3.5 seconds until they're all active, and I fire a single heavy missile every 3-3.5 seconds because of that. Keeps the damage flowing so armor reppers and shield boosters don't work as efficiently (they more or less hold off the damage than repair it at that point).
Awfully sorry if I confuse people. I have no clue about setups so I just salp on a few modules that seem to make sense and hope for the best. I'd appreciate any advice on a Caracal setup as well.

Ferox:
5x Heavy Launchers 2x Medium Nosferatu
1x 10mn AB/MWD 2x Large Extenders/1x Large Shieldbooster, 1x Med Cap Booster 1x Invul Field 1x 20km Scrambler
2-3x BCU 1-2x PDU/Shield Relay
Not the best setup in the world but it works for pirating Cruisers/BC (packs nice damage and can hold off anything they can throw at you). I prefer passive tank but some people like the massive dps/s you can hold off in the active tank

I go solo pirating in a scorpion (actully, I normally go with someone in a BC or something like that for extra damage and for the extra scramble points and web), good for locking ships down and ransoming them..fun to get a t2 ships. =)

Any ship with as many low slots as possible will fit you, filled with warp core stabs.

Caldari Frigate Killer
Caracal Setup 3 x Malkuth Assault 2 x T2 Assault Launchers (Total 5 Missile launchers) T2 Shield 20k Scrambler Web to sort out the 4,500kph MWD ECM Spatial Jamer Cap Booster Balistic Control System
Got me some nice little crows with this setup.
also make sure that if you are a Caracal pilot then max out your missile skills.

That setup seems odd to me.
-First off, why mix the t2 and named assault launchers? If you can use T2, it shouldn't be a problem to fit 5.
-A T2 shield what? Booster?
-You've missed out a low slot, unless you meant 2 BCUs. ---------------------------

No caracal should ever have smartbombs (hello, missiles?), 2 medium extenders WTF?, **** resists, and to top it all off: RCUs. Two RCUs, on a caracal. My hands are covered in kitten blood. Take them off now.

lots of setups to try here...
I'm already using a fairly close setup to one listed on my ferox, I just don't seem to do a lot of dps, and my missile skills crammed with sp's.
As for the merlin setup, looks very interesting, will have to try that out (cheap merlins, don't care if a lose a load).
Caracal seems to be the fav. here though, I did have a bit of luck with my basic setup, the problem is finding the people to shoot at
Back to the drawing board!

/me chops off HippoKing's hands.
Oh, wait. I think I misunderstood.
That is an awful setup, I occasionally use PDUs on my cara, but that is for specific setup I like, and the cap bonus is useful as well. If there's ever any need for RCUs on a cara, you're probably doing something wrong. ---------------------------

Arguing with Dark Shikari is probably not the best of ideas, seeing as he's had far more experience of EVE than me, but speaking from personal experience there's better things to do with a Caracal than fitting 2 large shield extenders. ---------------------------
