Looks like there will be serious competition to our favourite game Eve Online.
Elite Dangerous is coming this year.
I remember an old Elite,Elite 2 and Frontier First Encounters which I was playing for years back in '90s. Now finally new version is coming.
Some feedback from beta testers:
"Wesley Magyar
Ive been playing ED For awhile now. And it is sincerely the best damn game ive ever played.... and its not even close to complete. Ive been an Eve Online player since 2006, Since ive gotten into the Beta for this i have logged into eve twice.... i have a feeling Eve Is Doomed... This game is the second coming.... i kid you not.n++"
and
"Matthew Downing
I've played EVE from when it was in Beta. I sold my main character about a month after I bought ED premium beta; I know there is no way I'm going back. Fair enough I got into Eve because it was like the new and MMO Elite I'd been craving for... But now I can get the game I really wanted in the first place!"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ISR4ebdGlOk see for yourselves.
In my opinion current biggest problem in Eve is lack of new content added to game for like last 3 years or so... Of course DX11 and game mechanic changes are all nice, but its not the thing what will make me stay for much long, especially with new fresh and very good competitor on market.
I've been playing Eve since Apocrypha and I see that Eve is slowly going downhill all the time since then. Back then we had online around 60-70k ppl on server at given timezone all the time, now it's not going higher than 35k ppl online. Most of us run 2+ accounts, some even more than 10+ at same time so I'm guessing that real ammount of people playing Eve is not more than 10-12k people. Elite has now over 25k ppl playing beta ( you can't multibox there ) - it speaks for itself. |

Elite: Twitch based, limited multiplayer (max 32 in one place), focused on exploration and singleplayer experiences.
EVE: RTS based, unlimited multiplayer (for all intents and purposes), focused on trade and politics.
Very different games...
I do agree that EVE has been slipping, but that's because most of the activities that generate income are very hands-off. POS, PI, production, market - They don't require much input beyond a couple of minutes a day, with the occasional hour of hauling. Even sov warfare has become a hands-off activity where only occasional structure grinds are necessary.
CCP really needs to introduce more active activities to increase participation or retool current activities to be more active.

Anybody noticed what a stupid name this is; Elite Dangerous. (It has all the ring someone in a trench in Kosovo would dream up.) I can imagine how really cool the game must be if the name is so really cool, too! And, gee, a YouTube link TOO? Wow!
I guess it's obvious from your mighty post EVE MUST be doomed!
I remember when it was doomed because of Skyrim...remember that? Then, it was doomed because of Rift...remember that? THEN, it was doomed because of Star Wars the OLD (something with an R). I certainly remember THAT! NOW it's doomed because of...what was that name again...Dangerous Elites...something. Anyway...cool. Doomed. There was thread a while ago that analyzed when the "EVE is dying" crap began. Dude even made a cool graph with help from someone who kept records of these kinds of posts.

I grew up on Elite, it was one of the first games I played that really got me into gaming and sci-fi. When i first came to Eve it was because i was trying to find a game that would remind me of those days playing Elite.
I'm beta testing ED, and I'm probably going to take a break from Eve when ED goes live. I'm sure other people will too...
But Eve doomed??? Nope!
Eve is a solid game, with a die hard fanbase and many many years of life left.

Posting in stealth "Help us make Elite more popular" thread.
New game content is added in EVE so hard, that players after few years break has to do tutorials again. Exploration changes in Odyssey, industry changes in Crius, mobile deployable etc... Eve is losing players count not because of the lack of new content, but because of almost zero advertising and the press on new players to start team PvP carrier instead of PvE. And according to numerous researches most newbees want to start with PvE.So they quit after their first payed month.
Elite is like a pockemon. I mean grafic and background. Eve is a real place. Cold and harsh, with dark and sad stories in behind. Sandbox, created by hundreds of thousands of players during several years. |

Interesting how no one mentions that you have to PAY -ú100 to "participate" in the Beta
I wanted it to be good, but considering Braben's post original Elite track record, and the fact that his biggest hit since was Kinectimals, Im not about to mortgage my house for a beta of a game when crashing into asteroids is a regular occurrance, thanks. What happens when a new space game comes out is people play it for a bit...then you know...come back.
Why? Because EVE is not a game you can give up. Its like ******, you always have the urge....even people who have broken it still come and have a look and follow EVE. |

The only competition EVE has is itself.
You do have a point about content, but CCP unveiled capsuleer controlled stargates this year, so I expect they're going to open up new territories somewhere. They could also open up another WH galaxy easily. |

They're not even the same kind of game. EVE is basically a rougelike mashed with a social simulator. Not a great deal of similarities with Elite save for a sci fi setting. "Verily, I have often laughed at the weaklings who thought themselves good because they had no claws."

Eve Online is in a state of permanent near-death. By the time Elite: Dangerous will have lived out its happy, prosperous life and died like any other good game would, Eve will still be kickin' it in the same sick ward it's been in since 2003.

I actually agree that EVE seems to be on decline, based on my personal multi-region market data. I can't rule out that it could be other factors though such as ice changes that changed the purchase patterns.
But I can certainly tell that a few regions that used to be very busy a few years ago are probably 5-10x less busy now in terms of actual player presence. |

Based on that I can tell you the following: You are 10 years behind. Hey, thanks! Cool graph is in my sig, I'll update it with July figures next week if Chribba has time to pull the data for me.
I think that EVE's health is less reliant on new content than other MMOs, since the players themselves have so much impact in creating the content.
It's only natural for people to get bored, or have less time to play, after years and years of playing. So I hope CCP manages to maintain a steady flow of new players (like me ). EVE Online: Death-o-meter |
