Why must I run repair.exe after every (almost daily) patch before I can log in ?
I prolly has something to do with the fact that my eve launcher crashes to desktop when I try to run it?
It is rather inconvenient ...
Please advise ...

Because you ****** something up, because it doesn't happen to the majority of people.
Step 1) If you're using Windows 7, Disable UAC. If you're using Windows 8 or 8.1, stop being stupid and install Windows 7. Step 2) Move your Eve installation OUT of Program Files and/or Program Files (x86). Seriously. Move it to C:\Games\Eve or something. Step 3) Step 4) Profit! Because the Legacy Code has too much Psssssssssssssssh, nothing will ever get fixed until CCP stop wasting money on failed sparkle MMOs and instead rewrite the entire backend of EvE from scratch. |

Actually I am using Windows 8.1 with the default install location. Works fine, so it's not even that causing the problem.
My theory on this is that there are some segments of the Eve Community that, for whatever reason, treat their computers somewhat like my 15 year old daughter. They have 47 programs running in their system tray, 90 that start up automatically when the log in, and then wonder why everything seems to be running slowly when they've consumed 75% of their available system memory just by pushing the power button. De'Veldrin's Corallary (to Malcanis' Law): Any idea that seeks to limit the ability of a large nullsec bloc to do something in the name of allowing more small groups into sov null will inevitably make it that much harder for small groups to enter sov null. |

I also have to run the repair.exe each time there is a new patch. If I try and use the launcher, it downloads the patch with no issues, but never applies the thing. I left it a few times for up to an hour (while doing something else) just to come back and see its still stuck on "3/4 applying patch".
Kind of frustrating, but used to it now.

I'll confirm that UAC can and will cause problems if your installation is in "Program Files" or similar system folder and it's not just for EVE.
My solution that resolved absolutely all problems with the launcher is to make a new partition for EVE. It also helps with disk fragmentation (if you are not using SSD) and boost up performance slightly (faster access to files while playing, since they are on a isolated partition). o.0 |

I have to run the repair.exe each time eve is patched as the launcher gets stuck at step 3/4 when updating.
In the repair.exe log I saw lines like this "Unable to delete "D:\Program Files (x86)\CCP\EVE\res\audio\758858055.wem", error: [Error 5] Access is denied: 'D:\\Program Files (x86)\\CCP\\EVE\\res\\audio\\758858055.wem'" So I think there is a permission issue with the folder.
I've made a change and will let you know with the next update... talk tomorrow o/ |

Yep the permission change that I applied to the folder has worked and the update from tonight ran with no trouble when I opened the launcher. I changed the permissions on the installation folder to give "Everyone" modify rights. this has fixed it for me |

My main computer runs on Windows 7 and my laptop on 8.1. Neither of which have any issues with patching.
Yea, most people have way too many background programs running. Most of which are rarely ever used. My experience, whether you're running an SSD, Boss-Rammed rig or not, is to keep you system running as clean as possible to maximize performance.
I clean up all bloat and deactivate ALL start-up applications except for my antivirus. Then I just run and close programs as they are needed.

The Launcher itself is just a big dirty spot in the system then. It serves no user purpose other than chewing up system resources. CCP .. always first with the wrong stuff CSM .. CCP Shills with a vacation plan

How do you mean? On my systems I: 1. Start the Launcher; 2. Launcher downloads and patches the game; 3. I login and press play when ready; 4. The launcher "launches" the game and closes itself out.
How is it taking up resources? Do you leave it running? I was hunting for sick loot, but all I could get my hands on were 50 corpses.............. |

It takes up maintenance time (downloading itself, installing), it takes up disk space, and while it is running it takes up mem/cpu. Mostly it just carries bugs/problems.
Benefits from running it? None (unless you like to be swatted about with marketing crap) so I never launch it.
Playtime 1. Start EVE 2. Login.
Patch days: 1. Start EVE - receive random can't find server error 2. Run repair.exe (side note: haven't timed it in a while but when I did patching through repair was faster than patching through launcher.) 3. Start EVE 4. Login
When running multi-client I can do all the Playtime steps in parallel. The launcher can't even begin to hold a candle to that.
