Now before you panic -> it is to much to ask to port the game: yes you are right.
There is another solution though... for new intel Macs, the release of CrossOver Office is around the corner, it does support both DirectX and OpenGL Windows API. Now we managed to get Half Life 2 to run on this, it was not easy but nowhere near the time of a port or anything (compared to that prolly 5% the time).
Currently Eve does already install with CrossOver Office preview on Mac OS X 10.4.7, though you can hear the character select screen music the screen stays black... so I suppose several fine tuning to CrossOver X has to be done. I guess that CCP could easily help out the guys at CrossOver to do the tuning and to get that thing running.
I am one of those MacBook Pro users that only have a Win XP installed dual boot to play Eve and I would much prefer to wipe the XP from my disk forever ;)
Just my idea.... of course if you want to port the whole game -> feel free would love that hehe :) Dwayne Harris, Newbie with Style! |

Why not just use Cedega? Its much easier.

The OSX operating system is horrendous, Just use boot camp and XP install like most people do.
XP on Bootcamping Apple is superior to any PC I've ever seen. Why I went for the Macbook pro in the first place.
Given the choice I'd abolish ANY Apple operating system.

That stuff lags, Unless you have the right processor and among other things Memory. Plus I am sure that other PPC Macintosh users would like to play too, With out having to: Switch computers, Reboot with a different system or buy a whole new computer. Just to play EVE.
So my opinion on this "Intel macintosh users only (with a Emulated Windows)" stuff is B*******.
P.S. Sorry for the foul languish it was the best wording I could find for that spot

Make Eve run on Wine (or CVS-Cedega) and it would be ok, imho. Since i've no credit card it's a bit difficult to get a Cedega account, though it is'nt impossible
But it's bothersome while it shouldn't bei, imho. _____________________________ - be excellent to each other -

EVE runs on the latest version of Wine, I think, with minor modifications. Its quite buggy though. I think it works on CVSCedega, though I'm not sure.

Dude, I said

Has in, Not playing EVE via "Cedega" or "CrossOver" (when it comes out.) I ment "That I am sure, That people would like to to play them on the oringinal computer they bought, Not a dual boot, Emulated Windows or Buying a new computer with Windows XP Pro installed."
Though Dual Boot is not bad, It takes time from the game, Due to the restart time. I am not sure if PowerPC have the Dual boot capability, At which point to the "Dual Boot", I have not much to say, Other then it does take time to restart the system and reload it with Windows instead.
The Emulated Windows have poor capabilitys due to the amount of processor needs, For the Emulated Windows is running with the macintosh in the back round, And to top it off, It still takes the memory on your macintosh, Unless you have it on a second/external drive, Then you fine for memory, But your processor still gets eaten.
And this is coming from a ILL-Legit computer user. Who has Computers geeks for friends. |

The last time both wine and cvs-cedega were broken in that manner, but that was some month ago. Relating the forums it didn't really got better since then :(
And yes, i mean that ist should be playable with no differences to the native version! A bugged version is nearly senseless, imho, especially when it comes to fights. _____________________________ - be excellent to each other -

MACs are just Linux with a fancy front end arent they? probally could compile Cendega on a PPC mac. however the PPC is dead as apple is moving away from it.

YOu folks have some misconceptions.
1. Wine or Cedega will never run on PPC Macs, hence I asked for a intel port. (This is due to the fact that you would need an x86 emulator underneath which will slow it down immensly and to hard to develop -> see WinePPC has given up).
2. Mac OS X is not Linux. It is also a Unix OS, but that's it with similarities, it does not use X-Windows nor does it have a Macro Kernel.
3. Wine and Cedega are NOT emulators, they are API compatibility suites, translating DirectX to native OS OpenGL on the fly. If done right the impact on performance will be minimal and the programm "feels" like running native. (With Half Life 2 on my MacBook Pro it runs faster in Mac OS X with CrossOver/Wine than it does on a pals Vaio under XP2).
Hence the only solution that will show fast results is: - Intel Mac only (sorry PPC folks I have an old iMac also, but that wont happen) - an API translator like Wine or Cedega for OS X (Wine is on the way, release will be in August for OS X)
Downsides at the moment: -> Eve is to buggy in Wine at the moment to play -> Cedega did not announce interest to port their API suit to OS X yet.
Current solution: -> I installed BootCamp and have a 10gig partition running XP2 and reboot every time I want to play Eve... Dwayne Harris, Newbie with Style! |

I just want to say that it would be wonderful to have a x86 only binary of EVE to run on the new Intel Macs.
many thanks.

OS X runs on top of BSD. BSD is not linux. It is a UNIXy kind of operating system, so I can see where the confusion comes in.

I tried running starcraft on wine.. even THAT wouldn't run very well.. and you think a high end game like EVE Online will? LOL! Try it yourself before telling everyone else to please.

Off topic, but to answer your question no they are not.
For starters, Mac's are based on a flavour of BSD (the Unix that came out of Berkely California), so in terms of the kernel is much closer to OpenBSD ( www.openbsd.org) than to any Linux flavour.
In terms of the GUI elements, again this is quite different to most Linux implementations. There is no reliance on (but support for) X; In fact Apple have their own Windowing Manager/Desktop Environment rolled into one which they term "Aqua" and these parts of the project are not open source.
Perhaps the most advanced graphical feature of the Mac OS X operating system is the Quartz Extreme Graphics Engine.
This was the first such engine to make use of hardware acceleration (via OpenGL) to composite 2D and 3D graphics, and it builds grpahics using PDF's, not bitmaps.
It also supports vector graphics, which allows Apple to do the funky "special effects" that you may have seen such as using ExposT.
I'll leave it at that for now. More information is out there, drop me a line if you want it. - -- Belinda HwaFang [IEND] Infinity's End |

Clarification : OS X is based on the mach kernel and the userspace is a version of freebsd 4.4. The API framework is Steve Job's Next Step framework that has been expanded to hook into all new subsystem APIs in OS X.
That said there is no reason why Cedega cannot be ported to Intel OS X natively. Once the Intel Macs take off Cedega will put it out I am sure since there is solid driver support in OS X for the green and red teams and people who are used to paying for software.
EVE on OS X isn't that far away.

Then you did something wrong pal. I run the following games in a beta of CrossOver on OS X (MacBook Pro 2,16 GHz, 2 Gig RAM, 256MB X1600): - Warcraft III - Half Life 2
At least Half Life 2 is much more advanced grafix than most of the games and it runs like a charm. We also tried WoW for fun, though there is no actual need as an OS X version of WoW exists by Blizzard themselves.
I agree with the last poster, I hope to see Cedega come to OS X soon ... Dwayne Harris, Newbie with Style! |

Yes. OS X can already run Windows based programs on it fine and dandy. It doesn't need anymore. Linux needs some love!
