Hi,
ransoming is fun, but pods worth anything are pretty hard to catch in lowsec. Neither can you hold most ships ransom, since they often have at least some means left to keep hurting you.
But if ships were to become "incapacitated" when they reach 0 hull, there'd be an opportunity to peacefully negotiate terms.
Some more details to possibly make it work:
- An incapacitated ship could only warp unless pointed; maybe it loses all powergrid, CPU and drone bandwidth or shut down any modules and drones some other way
- An incapacitated ship could also still self-destruct to limit griefing; maybe with a shorter delay, if any
- It would have very little HP left without any resistances until it explodes for good; wreck HP could be alright
- A safety setting could allow pilots to have their weapons disengage (not their points though) as soon as a ship becomes incapacitated, so you could still just choose to blap away until stuff is properly dead
That's about all you'd need to do I think to improve ransoming. It could really use some love, because ransoming is fun and not rarely a memorable experience for either side. And if the pirates stick to their word (such as our lot), losing a fight can be much less frustrating for the loser.

What on earth are you talking about? "When they reach 0 hull"... Listen mate, when something reaches 0 hull, it means that the entire structure has collapsed and the ship hull has been breached to the vacuum of space.
I don't think there is much to negotiate over a ship wreck.

I think this idea comes from a good place and is one of those "it would be cool if..." but its just not worth the devs time if you want to ransom a ship just bring in a heavy tackle that can tank what ever is left being pushed out by the guy you just wrecked nuet him to 0 and have a laugh when he threatens you in local with his 30 phantom friends |

A "finish him" feature would be neat in theory.
Once your last volley puts him past 0 hull, it in fact lessens it's power and leaves him with exactly 1 HP. At this point the ship and all it's functions are disabled besides sub-light engines and warp drives.
This would have an option to be enabled/disabled, allowing you to destroy your enemies like usual if you wish.
With the setting enabled you can now ransom him without risking him applying DPS or ECM drones to you. One click of the weapons icon will destroy the ship if you please, since he has only 1 HP left.

This sounds more like "Kill the guy, then ask him for what he knows after his dead already". 0 hull is 0 hull, mate. You're dead, not paralized or near-dead, but dead, ship is crit and gone, pod ejected, the deed is already "done, sir, done." What others have done before in the past is bring the victim to structure (not 0 though, 0 bad), jammed, tackled, and neuted, and invite to private chat to discuss terms, occasionally popping off a round or two to keep him in structure. |
