So I have like 6 million isk with a catalyst that I'm running L1 missions on. It's set up nice with 125 mm meta4 rails and I'm trying to get to L2 asap because they don't pay much and are very easy.
I'm looking forward to starting pvp. At what point as far as capital, income, skills and ship level/tech level should I start?
I'm also looking to outfit a thorax soon. I want to avoid plates or any extra weight and use a mwd for as much speed as possible. I'm thinking double armor rep. I'm not sure if I want to use the speed for fast, short range engagements with blasters like a skirmisher, or use longer range 200 or 250mm rails as a kitty sniper, with the speed used to dictate range.
I'm looking to fit the ship for L2 and 3 missions and possibly pvp so having two different fits would be fine.
For the record I'm concentrating heavily on gunnery and power management skills with high speed maneuvering and will probably go back to drones later. |

you should start when you can afford to lose a couple frigates.
I'd go with rails for missioning (hit the rats from range, and they don't warp off), though blasters are better for PvP (because you'll be in close anyway). One of the bitter points of a good bittervet is the realisation that all those SP don't really do much, and that the newbie is having much more fun with what little he has. - Tippia |

If money is an issue, find a corp that will help you out, either through direct donations (we've all been there) or by letting you tag along on their money-making ventures. Faction Warfare (FW) is another option which is good for newer players because you can make money while you PvP by running the complexes.
Blasters and rails can both be effective on a Thorax, especially since the recent buff to rails. Your choice will obviously affect your engagement profile (what can you target?) and your piloting (now how do I kill it?).
I would echo the above advice and start in frigates. They're cheap, fun, and it's not hard to find fights with them out in FW space. I'd recommend the Incursus if your medium-term goal is a Thorax. You can look for solo fights (some situational awareness helps here - it's often bait), or go out in groups and target other fleets. Either way, the only way to learn is to try. You can sit around running missions until you can afford a pirate faction battleship, but you'll still lose it immediately in real combat if you have no experience. www.ensignyooch.wordpress.com

Thanks! Yeah. I like my catalyst but it's slow as hell. I'd probably go with a incursus with blasters for pvp. Any recommendations for tech level for newbie pvp?
I'm in a Corp right now with just a few rl friends who play casually, so I'll ask them for help but if I get very serious I may go hunting for another.
Another question, if you're running around solo, is a frigate the best to be in ir are cruisers okay? It seems like cruisers are more easily ganked and more expensive to lose? I mean, us anything bigger than a DD a group combat ship? |

Get to that choppah!! NAOW!! I started pvp as soon as I had my first frigate of the tutorials.
Of course I lost it within seconds and I have been a bit lucky with some friendly EVE player donations to get me started.
You can also do Faction Warfare to earn some ISK but I've never done that so I cannot inform you about any pros and cons. Anyway. You will be fine in PvP. Keep flying Frigates untill you get a grasp of what you need to do in PvP.
There is a LOT to learn. I am almost 2 months old I think and I am still a rediculous noob and I get blown up a lot. So it's better to get blown up in frigates than in cruisers
Fly what you can afford to lose.
And if you want to, shoot me a message in game to fly together

Use a fit like this OP for your first forays into PvP:
[Atron, Derptron]
Micro Auxiliary Power Core I Magnetic Field Stabilizer II Damage Control II
Experimental 1MN Afterburner I Limited 1MN Microwarpdrive I J5b Phased Prototype Warp Scrambler I
Light Neutron Blaster II, Null S Light Neutron Blaster II, Null S Light Neutron Blaster II, Null S [empty high slot]
Small Hybrid Burst Aerator I Small Hybrid Collision Accelerator I [empty rig slot]
NOTES: - if you cannot fit the Tech 2 stuff, that is okay. Just fit whatever meta variant you can afford. - if you are having problems with CPU and Powergrid, downgrade the guns to Ion Blasters. - the tactic with this ship is simple... use the MWD to dive into range, apply warp scrambler, turn off MWD, turn on AB, orbit at 500 to 1000m, then pray.
- after the fight, open a conversation with your attacker. Talk with him/her and see what you could have done differently. Contrary to what many say, most "bloodthirsty/sociopathic" PvPers will be helpful and provide a wealth of information to help you in your next encounter. Hell... sometimes they may even give you ISK or a ship just so you can come back and try again sooner. Change isn't bad, but it isn't always good. Sometimes, the oldest and most simple of things can be the most elegant and effective.

Nice guys thanks for the advice and the fits.
How do you guys find random pvp? Cruise around lowsec?
What's the difference between the rats in lowsec and the npcs from missions? Is the loot better on lowsec rats? Are they tougher? How should I check to see if I can take the rats or not?
Just looking for something to do while looking/waiting for fights.
Also, I know you need to use the d scanner a lot to know what's around you Ave approximate positions but using combat probes is probably also a good idea too? |

I would actually NOT recommend engaging on stargates against someone who is not "flashy" (see: someone who has less than -5.0 security status or has already "illegally" engaged someone). The reason is that gate-guns REALLY hurt frigates (2 or 3 shots and you are dust) and the person you engage may have friends on the other side waiting for you.
Minas' Morgul wrote:What's the difference between the rats in lowsec and the npcs from missions? Is the loot better on lowsec rats? Are they tougher? How should I check to see if I can take the rats or not? They are much tougher. 100+ dps is recommended to break them, though you can get away with a little less.
Loot-wise... it is hit or miss. Normal belt spawns don't drop anything that you would not normally find in high-sec (though, maybe a little more)... but sometimes you will come across really "expensive" NPCs that a PITA to kill. For example: a relative newbie I am mentoring came across a Mordus battleship NPC the other day... he couldn't even scratch it it in his 150 dps frigate and so just left it. He was quite... unhappy... when I told him how much the loot would have been worth several hours later.
Minas' Morgul wrote:Also, I know you need to use the d scanner a lot to know what's around you Ave approximate positions but using combat probes is probably also a good idea too? Unhappy is putting it mildly . One billion ISK, and I just... left it there...
Another thing you can try in lowsec is exploration. Relic sites for example can be done with low sp (kind of hard sometimes though), and are pretty profitable.
One of my corp mates is also just running around lowsec looking for player wrecks to salvage, he made 10 mil earlier off of two of them. If you look for the aftermath of big battles, I'm sure you could rake the ISK in.
Plus, making ISK in lowsec will get you used to having situational awareness that is useful in PVP. Actually make that anything in EVE I suppose.

Here's a premium starter fit for PVP:
ATRON * warp disruptor or scrambler (disruptor preferred) * microwarpdrive or afterburner (MWD preferred) * medium shield extender * any blasters - seriously these are just for looks. You can have them offline if you need to conserve powergrid. But have blasters and not some other weapon system because you need to look like you can fit a ship properly. * low slots: give 'er a nanofiber, damage control, power diagnostic---you can fit pretty much whatever passive bonuses you like, just keep it passive modules (no armor repairers).
Now take this baby and find some friends to fly in PVP with. Go around and ask people to invite you to fleet, tell them you can tackle.
If you get into a fleet, you want to get on whatever voice program they are using and listen to the FC's commands. Do exactly as the FC says, when the FC says it, and do not assume he meant something when he didn't say it. When it's your turn to tackle someone, you break gate cloak by double-clicking anywhere in space, hold [ctrl] with your off-hand and click the target on your overview with your main hand to target them, hit that warp disruptor, then click the approach button. You should do all of these things within about 2 seconds real time. Once you've started approaching, you have about 3 more seconds to set an orbit distance and get your prop mod running.
Shoot your guns if you get in range, but don't get in range just to shoot your guns. Follow these rules and you will do well in your first PVP run. You'll also probably lose your ship. Get used to it. Fit a warfare link to your tech 1 battlecruiser. Train Wing Commander. Get in the Squad Commander or Wing Commander position. Your fleets will be superior to everyone else's. I take it I'd be better rolling around in an atron or other frigate compared to my painfully slow catalyst? I need to train fitting and frigate skills more then in preparation of outfitting one. |

Ralph King-Griffin wrote:What is with you people telling a newbies to shield tank armour ships , did I miss a big meeting or something!? The Thorax and Atron are a bit weird right now. In some shield setups, you can get almost as much EHP as you could with an armor setup without compromising dps.
However, in the case of the Atron... I would actually aim for speed+damage over tank (unless specifically fit for tackling as Mr. Glitterstim did). The reason is that even with a medium shield extender it will easily pop if it is locked down. Speed is everything for a frigate. Especially one that is innately "fragile."
@Minas Morgul
[Catalyst, Newbie PvE]
Small Armor Repairer I 'Refuge' Adaptive Nano Plating I Magnetic Field Stabilizer I

Small Hybrid Burst Aerator I Small Hybrid Collision Accelerator I [empty rig slot]
- Rigs are optional
- the tactic with this fit is to stay out at the edge of your optimal range
- with no skills applied you should be able to deal ~60+ damage per second @ 14km (or ~90+ dps @ 7km with Antimatter ammo)
- (important) as your skills improve your damage and damage application should increase. The fastest way to do this it to train your ship skill to level 4. Gunner support skills will also help.
- the support skills that affect frigate weapons and modules also affect your destroyer. Dessies are basically just oversized frigates that are supposed to deal more damage.
Also... the Thorax does not get a bonus to armor reps. You are probably thinking of its T2 version, the Deimos. The Thorax has bonuses to medium hybrid turret damage and tracking (see: application). Change isn't bad, but it isn't always good. Sometimes, the oldest and most simple of things can be the most elegant and effective.

I'd you are active repping you want your resistances as high as you can get them, it means your repper will have less work to do and thus be more effective
Quote:Damn. How do you get a 150 fps frigate? And that sucks :(. I have a catalyst with 8 meta 4 125 mm prototype Gause and barely break 100
I have an assault frigate approaching 300fps, it's t1 variant is doing about 200ish (I'd need to check I havet Sat in it in a while) both with blasters now so their effactive Range is shorter than a warp scrambler . You do this by training the support skills for each weapon system (t2 guns also help)

To OP, you'll love the Incursus, you can do a ton of stuff with it. You can brawl in close and tank the entire universe by using 2 armor reps and a capacitor booster (like in the blog Ralph linked), or use rail guns and stay out at scram range and kill other frigates with short range guns. Also, should I bother with tanking at all? I like the idea of a double rep but I saw posts saying it wasn't worth it because of the low hp of my armor. It seems I'd be pulsing a lot and either eating up hull or wasting cap? |

Here is a FW blog I found with a lot of fits for all the Gallente Frigates, including the T2 ones. I actually took a fleet Taranis fit this gentleman made and downgraded all of it to fit on an Atron, thus the NEUTATRON was born (yes, capital letters are necessary). Its 4 angry Neutralizers slapped onto a MWD fit Atron fueled by cap boosters and wishful thinking. Only useful when in a gang though.
http://gallentemilitia.blogspot.com/p/incursus_13.html
The cool thing is he gives a quick "how to fly" for most of the fits, so take a look at some of these. The newbie ones in particular. I'm currently using my own versions of some of those fits. Actually, reading the how tos is a good thing to do, it'll give you an idea of how to fly these fits, and teach you the logic behind their design, why one fit works against another etc... Basically a crash course in EVE rock paper scissors.
It's a lot to take in but, but just take it easy and have fun. Fit a few frigates worth less than a million and throw them at anything that moves and learn. "I only lose ships when I fly with Azda." - Barry Cuttlefish |

I like being able to stay out if tackling range, but what keeps them from running from me/warping away. To keep people from "running away" you need to fit one or two things;
- Warp Disruptor/scambler: this will "shut down" your opponent's warp drive. The only ways to escape it are to kill the offending ship, jam it with Electronic Warfare, get out of its range, or fit warp core stabilizers. The disruptor has long range (20+ km) and applies 1 "point" of disruption The scrambler has very short range (8+ km) and applies 2 "points" of disruption... including the ability to "shut down" Microwarpdrives. Warp Core Stabilizers are passive mods that give 1 "point" of warp disruption immunity. However, they also severely cut down your targeting range and speed... and take up a slot that could be used for greater effectiveness in something else.
- Stasis Webifier: this mod gives you "range control" by reducing a target's speed by about 50% or more within its range (10+ km). In "brawling" fits this mod is very important.
Understand that everyone in the game has access to the same ships and equipment. For you to stay completely out of tackling range means that the other guy will also be out of your tackling range... and both of you can escape at will.
Minas' Morgul wrote:Also, should I bother with tanking at all? I like the idea of a double rep but I saw posts saying it wasn't worth it because of the low hp of my armor. It seems I'd be pulsing a lot and either eating up hull or wasting cap? It depends.
A ship that is fit for self repair (see: "active tanking") is good for 1v1 encounters. As long as you can repair enough incoming damage (either by mitigating damage through speed and/or damage resistance... or by having high repair rate) for long enough, then the HP of your ship will not matter too much... unless you are greeted by a ship specifically designed to "punch" through with lots of damage in one or two shots... or you encounter a ship that is fit for wiping out your capacitor energy.
Other ships (see: kiters) use speed and/or range to avoid damage altogether. Their only concern is being "locked down" by another ship using a warp scrambler and/or stasis webifier.
And then there are "buffer fits" that are typically used in PvP. Basically they try to slap on as much raw HP and damage resistance as possible. They cannot regenerate any of their HP... but they do gain some measure of immunity against certain forms of Ewar, do not need to worry about capacitor power as much, and can sometimes last longer against multiple opponents.
The Atron fits that Reaver Glitterstem gave you for the Atron is considered a "buffer-fit tackler." It is simply designed to move as fast as possible for as long as possible while trying to stay outside of the "lock-down zones" (sub-10km). The Atron fit I have you is an example of a "speed-gank" fit... where being faster and more damaging than your opponent is pretty much your only form of "defense." The Catalyst fit I gave you is a "ranged active-tanking" ship. It is not designed to take large amounts of punishment too quickly and is certainly not geared for taking out other players. Change isn't bad, but it isn't always good. Sometimes, the oldest and most simple of things can be the most elegant and effective.
