I'm debating which program to buy, and money isn't too much of an issue. I'm just curious what you use, have seen or heard about a 3d graphics, rendering, and animation program. I've looked at Bryce and Lightwave, and the price difference forces me to ask what everyone else prefers.
Also, out of curiousity, does anyone know what the graphics designers of EVE use? And no, I don't hope to mimic them.

money is no issue? well then either go with 3ds Max, or Maya. 3ds max is more of the popular one among the internet artists. Maya is nore for the pro lvl. you won't see much talk about maya on the internet. i'd go with 3ds max, you could get alot more help from the internet. It's user friendly.

Though I'm not a graphics artist and cannot speak from experience, you might want to check out Blender which recently made it to version 2.42 and is available under the GNU General Public License for free. The entry in wikipedia has some useful background information. Originally by: en.wikipedia.org "Although Blender (as of Version 2.41) still lacks features found in current proprietary systems (e.g., ngon based modeling workflow), Blender's workspace management is considered to be amongst the most innovative GUI concepts for graphical tools and is believed to have inspired proprietary software vendors' interface design (e.g., Luxology's Modo)."

3DMax all the way. It's an industry standard and extremely user friendly. Besides AutoDesk the makers of 3DSMax bought over Maya. So you can expect the two program to remain seperate entities but burrow ideas from one another. They will remain seperate though for $$$ reasons of course!
But just to be on the safe side learning 3DSMax would prove to be a wiser decision.
The ships of eve are modelled in Maya by the way.

The program I use is Animation Master. Fantastic program and amazingly easy to use. Rendering is just as good as 3ds and lightwave, and is packed full of nice features and plug-ins that are very user friendly. It even comes with a tutorial booklet going over main features of the program.
The one thing that turns people of of it though, is its spline and patch based, it cannon support polygonal modeling. If you do really want a polygonal model from it you have to buy this expensive 3rd party program, but that usually only for people that make video games.
For casual animation and modeling I would highly recommend Animation Master. Its pretty affordable too

Blender is good, but better yet, there is an entire book on Wikibooks about how to use it, also for free here.

the book is good for the basics but is a little outdated due to the regular updates that blender gets, its sometimes better to join one of the many forums a lot of which have video/text tutorials along with the help from a very good comunity

Cinema 4D from Maxon Download the free trial.
It is by far my personal favorite. Easy, powerful, and great workflow.

Imo Bryce needs not to be mentioned when talking about serious 3D artistry.

I was exposed to this program just recently, and I was appalled at how inefficient it was...
Seriously though, if you have the money, get 3dsmax and all the tutorial files. Just do every one of the tutorials, no matter if you think you understand it or not.

Well both 3d Studio Max and Maya are great programs (and autodesk now owns both of them) It used to be that Max had more users/resources on the internet -this was mainly because software *****s were a lot easier to come by and Maya back in the early days was well over $20k a license. These days this is no longer true;

Overall imo Maya has a stronger core tool set, but it really depends on what you want to do. If it's poly modelling go Max. If you want to get into some high level animation go Maya (high level I mean inverse kinematics in Maya are stronger / dynamics / cloth / fluids / paint fx) on the other hand Max has some really nice renderers avaliable.
I believe CCP use both Max and Maya in their pipeline, but I could be wrong. I know there was a write up on Alias' website about ccp and eve-online.

Personally I use Maya and 3DS Max. For some good free tutorials for Max I'd seriously recommend 3D Palace Theres a fair choice in free ones and you can even purchase some good DVD sets. ------------------------------------------------- AWMCorp is Recruiting
