So there I was moving through an 0.4 system to a destination in an empty T1 hauler. With a solitary weapon mounted, a howitzer that I've never used. I may as well have kept the gun in the shrink-wrap, and I've still got the first lot of rounds I bought for it.
So a pilot starts shooting at my ship as I approach the gate to the next system. I think - this is a bit rude. Maybe he's a pirate? But his guns/lasers/whatever aren't doing a lot of damage, as I cruise along at very slow hauler-esque speed. And he hasn't ransomed me, or attempted any dialogue of any kind. So he barely qualifies as a bona-fide 'pirate' because there doesn't seem to be any attempt on his part to actually make an income from this bizarre activity. What could have spurred this attack? I have no cargo on board, I'm not at war with anybody, I'm not even particularly wealthy, and I don't use implants either.
While thinking about this, I calculate that although it will take me at least good two minutes to reach the gate and warp to the next system, he'll be unlikely to have cut through half my armour by then. So I just keep cruising to the gate, watching my shields vanish with a look of bewilderment on my face. At some point I decide to turn on my shield booster, because armour repairs cost money, but shield boosting is free, after all. Then after about 30 seconds of slugging at my shields which are regenerating almost as fast as he can destroy them, I start thinking to myself "hmmm, maybe I should consider shooting back at this character", and then - bang. His ship is destroyed, presumably by CONCORD.
Now tell me, is this what they call the "suicide gank"? Did he have a deathwish and feel like going out in a blaze of (somewhat unspectacular) glory? I can't fathom any other explanation... therefore I ask you, the pirate/bounty hunter community. Do you people do this often? Or do you know of those who do? Is there a hidden purpose to this activity which I, in my naivety am too oblivious to detect? Please enlighten me! --

People who pirate without desire of income but for fun are what we call "murderers" or "griefers" (if they do it and cackle at the end). Sounds like he was just having fun. A suicide gank would involve killing you before they were destroyed by the guns. Since this didn't happen it isn't a suicide gank at all but similar to the scene where Wiley Coyote throws a stick of dynamite towards the Roadrunner, misses, the stick hits the mountain and the avalanche of rocks from above kills Wiley. ---------

No, suicide ganks happen in high sec, where they have zero chance of survival (if you do survive, you are exploiting, and the GMs knock on your door with big sticks).
This guy would have killed you and got away if he hadn't sucked so hard

I really hate to say this to you, but you may not be totaly right, it is possible to gank a hauler at a gate with a cruiser-class ship, which it is possible the guy was in. But the problem with ganking haulers at gate with cruisers is that there's no real time to open a convo to ransom anyone, just enough time to gank, loot their can and run. Sure it might be fun (griefing) but sometimes those haulers have nice cargo expanders worth a good sum of isk. --------------------- Random Pilot: OMFG!? why did you blow my ship up!? Necromancer D: Well... I wanted to see if it had a creamy filling. |

And he would know that you have no cargo, or that you aren't particulary wealthy how exactly?
It's much easier to just gank everything in sight.
His reasoning would have been fun/profit from hopefully picking up something juicy from your cargo. Also for the slim chance that someone might make a whine thread about you
EDIT: Not quite sure why he decided to do it in a ship that wasn't able to tank sentries/destroy you quick enough, oh well . Maybe he was just starting out, or plain stupid.

Actually those are PKs, Player Killers.
Personally i'm a pirate/PK, I don't let people go for chump change unless A. i'm in a bad mood (I dont enjoy killing if i've had a bad day, its a happy thing) or B. you pay me well.

He wasnt a suicide ganker. He was just an idiot. A suicide ganker would have waited until you entered high sec space, cargo and/or ship scanned you as you approached the gate (so he knew whether it was worth it or not), and if you had some juicy expanders or something on or a valuable cargo, hed have blown you up, gotten concordokkened, and then had his alt go in and pick up the loot from both ships.
The person in your example was just a mentally challenged person attempting what was quite likely one of their first low sec gate ganks. He took too long to realize that he wasnt doing enough damage to pop you, and stupidly decided to keep plinking away rather than warp off before the sentry guns got through his tank.

No, that would be what you define one as. He probably thought he was getting income (no cargo scanner?) or mods (no ship scanner?).
Simply blowing things up in low sec? Hardly griefing, by just about any standard in this case.

No, if he was flying a T1 frig (or a n00b ship!) it's likely you would have only been able to ransom his pod.

Dont see how he could tank sentries in anything smaller than a battlecruiser. But since he couldnt kill a hauler, he must have had civilian railguns on it or something.
I dont know, this doesnt make any sense.

can kill a hauler if a tanked cruiser, not too hard but if your tank fails you'll go down quick.
I ganked a empty hauler a few days ago, 2x 5mil expanders and a t2 AB. Not exactly a jackpot but sure is a profit over the 4 cap charges and 50 rounds of ammo i used. A cargo scanner is a waste of a slot so how kows if it could have been fuill of zyd or jsut empty. -----

Believe it or not, most pirates don't know what you have in your cargo hold. Sure, we could equip cargo scanners, but for most of us that's a waste of your valuable mids.
So for all this pirate knows, you could be carrying a 200mil blueprint, or some other nice bounty.
As for a suicide gank, well no. This guy just seems to not know what the hell he was doing. Usually you'll get hit at gates by Snipers who are out of the sentry guns' range, or ships that can actually TANK the sentry guns.
A suicide gank, in my mind, is when someone destroys you in high sec, takes a death from concord, and has a friend loot your can.
Also, some pirates ransom pods not ships, and a fair deal of money, as stated above, can be made off of loot. Most of the money is in ship ransoms, not all.

If any of you are confused by the situation that unfolded, you're not the only ones.
I have no idea what ship he was piloting, I didn't think to check. But the time that thought even occured to me it was well and truly a cloud of spacedust. I didn't see what killed his ship either, if CONCORD don't go to 0.4 then I guess it must've been a sentry gun. It certainly wasn't my gun, that's still got styrofoam kernels in the barrel from the original packing crate.
As for pirates not checking their targets... surely they would have to. Otherwise pirating has no purpose. Pirating without checking a target is like paying an exotic dancer just to have a conversation. Sure, it might pass the time, but... er, hello? Aren't we missing something here?
But then I guess some people really are that banal... they must be. My ship is clearly the Veldspar of the trading universe to even the most casual observer. Any self-respecting pirate would sooner laugh at it than shoot it. And if they did decide to shoot it, I'm sure I'd have been dead before I knew what hit me. --
