Kronos. -----Bastion Module On -----Tracking Computer II with tracking speed script -----Domination Tracking Enhancer -----Neutron Blaster Cannon IIs -----Federation Navy Antimatter Charge L -----Marauder Level 3 (7.5% per level to tracking)
Show info states that my tracking is 0.11xxxx... Rad/Sec. I cannot hit a frigate orbiting me at 8.5km with an angular velocity of 0.035xxxxx... Rad/Sec. (Optimal is like 6km and falloff is around 38km)
Apparently I'm missing something here. Anyone care to fill me in? |

Sig resolution. Large guns have 400m. Small guns have a 40m. The tracking number takes that into account, if the sig radius of the target is less than the sig resolution of your turret you won't track as well.
The frig has probably less than 100m sig radius. Use the pyfa/eft dps grafts to figure out if you should be hitting said frigate. Use webs/painters to help large guns track smaller things that orbit close. |

so that means they are going about 300m/s (radial velocity = transversial velocity / distance)
according to the BC calculator you have a 0.09% hit chance. if they had a 400m sig radius you would have a 93.22% hit chance
really should probably make a spreadsheet and stress test the variables for tracking but /effort You can trust me, I have a monocole |

Drones. You're missing drones in that engagement. A flight of scouts can remedy that particular situation, and far better than your own guns can. Either that or pop the frig at range before it enters orbit range. Trying to engage frigate rats at or even close to orbit with large guns, even with high tracking autos, has always been notoriously inefficient. |

As others above have stated, what's probably killing your performance is the fact that your gun has a signature resolution of 400m, while your target likely has a signature radius of 100m or less.
Also, keep in mind that "perfect" tracking (meaning your target's angular velocity and signature radius are exactly equal to your gun's tracking and signature resolution) only gives you a 50% chance to hit. To get higher hit percentages, you need to greatly exceed your target with your guns. CCP Falcon's thoughts on suicide ganking. Signature resolution is often overlooked as there is no way to influence it short of fitting smaller guns but it makes a big difference. This is also why some people, even some veteran players thought that it was possible for a Dual 250mm rail Naga to out track a 250mm rail Ferox.
In reality the Ferox tracks much much better especially against small targets due entirely to signature resolution.
Assuming the frigate is a rat it probably has a signature of 40m or less so for that part of the equation you end up with 400/40 which reduces your chance to hit to 10% right there but that is if you take that factor in isolation. Other factors will influence your chances both positively and negatively but you can see right away how much your large guns hurt your tracking against something so small. The easiest thing to do is use drones on rat frigates, though in truth unless I need to kill frigate rats either because of scrams or to complete a mission I can't be bothered to deal with them for the most part. Reality has an almost infinite capacity to resist oversimplification. |
