Howdy fellow pilots.
Been away for a good (or bad) number of weeks, and now I'm back. Anyway, just for fun, when was your "big break"? By this, when did you turn from someone counting the .01 isk to someone who couldn't get rid of it fast enough? Let's hear your tales of from rags to riches! |

This may sound odd but my big break was getting counter ganked when I first started ganking, I was still figuring it all out and got baited into attacking a ship that appeared to be shitfit, he knew I was a rookie and had me scan a shitfit badger, then warped to an orca and switched ships to a much tankier badger before he jumped to the system I ganking in, I got about 10% into shields and failed miserably. I convoed him to figure out wtf happened and ended up making a friend and mentor that turned me into the killer I am today "PvE in EVE is a trap to turn you into PvP content, don't confuse it for actual gameplay." I made this character in 2011, played for about 3 months and left. Didn't come back until August this year. On a whim decided to try a Sov Null corp that claimed to be newb friendly.
What do you know, they weren't lying. The people here were absolutely awesome from day one, and when I mentioned wanting to do exploration one of the older members immediately traded me an Astero to use for as long as I liked. That was my break. In a few hours I had enough isk to buy a ratting ship, in a few days enough to not worry about replacing any of my PvP ships (to be fair we do have a very good SRP as well).
I am not filthy rich but I have more than enough to cover all my possible expenses, and a way to make more if needed at any point. I never want to turn isk-making into a goal in and of itself, so this works very well for me. |

honestly? never.
10 years here, and i usually have just enough isk to pay for the ship i just lost and a new clone. I rarely, if ever break a billion. Only three times in 10 years.
1) i sold basically everything good i had had about 23b, and bought a nyx. Said nyx died a month later.
2) had a few billion in insurance after my nyx died, i stretched this for about a year
3) sold an alt and had a few billion, same as above, stretched this for about a year
My play style is a bit odd. I tend to do things for others, as ceo i usually wind up doing everything myself. My players make isk, and i barely make anything. It never bothers me cause i don;t pay with plex.
I know HOW to make money, i just usually am too damn busy running pos', recruiting, or dealing with alliance crap. Its only been now that i stopped doing that stuff and left my corp super small that i have time to make money... and well its boring, so i'll prolly recruit and ignore my own money again soon. lol. Decided to get into trading close to a year ago. Corpie who had become a good friend gave me a plex to sell for startup capital, told me to just pay him back half the value of said plex. This is when plex were around 550m isk.
Flipped it, turned it, reinvested, rinse and repeat.
Why do u think I have so much time on the forums? I'm camping orders on a couple of my trader alts, browsing the forums, listening to and downloading music.... just check orders for undercuts every so often.

Started LoSec exploration yesterday, expecting an income of about 10m per hour. Not too bad for a toon less than 2 weeks old. Very first jump into LoSec I stumble on a fight at the gate. Loser pops and the victor left some stuff on the wreck and flew off. I try my luck and ninjaloot.

I was an industrial player from day one so I've always had far more ISK than I've needed for lossmaking activities like PvP.
Looking back at my old spreadsheets, it seems my 'big break' was when I stopped mining my own minerals. [witty image] - Stream |

Biggest financial break? Leaving for a while after dumping every isk I had into plex when they were selling @300 or so, as an inflation hedge, and returning to find them at 800. I never had much of a big break I might add. Ive just steadily increased over time by making goals and exceeding them most of the time. Made a lot running invention years ago with 4 toons and selling rig bpo packs boy did those things sell like hot cakes, as well as the times that I tried multiboxing ore and ice before the ice changes hit. But not really something Id classify as a break. Strength isnt measured in numbers but in force of will. For if one motived willful individual stands many will fall around him that are weak.

my first "break" was when i was passing through a system and i saw someone post "21day free trial + 150 million isk starter money! convo me for details!" whats good to do on one character is good to do on several... and the forums. thus began the great buddy invite fiasco, which resulted in ccp laying down rules about invites and tank ceo having a nervous breakdown in the eve mirc channel and later jita local. i didnt make much isk but i had a lot of game time on my accnts.
my 2nd break was joining fw before the great goon caper nerf. talk about some dough.
my 3rd break, and really my big break, was discovering reverse safaris. KACHING
my best break though was getting to join tdsin, not because isk, but because i have a great time. Epic Space Cat |

There was this guy who moved into my mining system with 15 mining barges. He would ruthlessly mine the ice belts, all day and with perfect timing and efficiency. If you weren't at a spawn within the first 20 minutes, good luck getting any appreciable amount.
We tried getting rid of him in multiple ways, but nothing worked. He knew what he was doing. So I did the only sensible thing: Created more accounts and counterblobbed him with 14 of my own mining barges. He eventually left, and I took his spot as "that jackass who mines all the ice"
12 figures later, I've stopped mining. But 12 figures |

Heh, mine is somewhat strange.
I have been playing this game since 05, but for years I never really put much effort into gathering wealth or resources. I just kind of flew around and had fun here and there.
And then, some dude posted one of those I'M QUITTING EVE HERE IS WHY threads on the old forums. You know, the ones where everybody posts troll replies and demands to give them stuff?
I must have not been feeling well or something because I opted not to join the troll brigade that one time, and instead replied with a simple post consisting of two words.
"Be well"
Every other reply in that threads was exactly what you would expect. ;)
Days later I suddenly had multiple escrow/contracts assigned to me. I thought it was a mistake because I did not recognize the name at all. THEN I started looking through the list of items and my jaw dropped. Between ships (lots of freighters and expensive faction battleships), minerals, and a hodge podge of other stuff including officer mods, I was able to later sell what I didn't need for around 6 billion and kept the rest. And what I kept still made up for at least 75% the total ISK value of everything I was given.
I had tried to figure out who the hell this person was and why they gave me so much stuff, and after never getting a reply (the guy quit) via Eve-Mail I kind of gave up bothering trying to figure it out in the first place.
Maybe two weeks later or so somebody replied to the I quit thread, ranting how that guy quit without ever returning all the stuff he owed him.
I then noticed the name of the OP in that thread when reading the new post and realized it was the same guy that gave me everything. :P I went through the thread and realized my post was the only one that wasn't an insulting reply.
In any sense, I stopped posting insulting replies in the "I quit" forum threads from that day forward. ;) |

For me it was when salvage entered the game, and I noticed that Armor Plates didn't have any use whatsoever in the initial rig recipes. For that reason they were available very cheap on the market ... they were utterly useless!
Well, I decided to invest essentially all of my liquid assets (maybe fifty million ISK at the time?) into buying armor plates as cheap as possible. My thinking was that even LOLCCP -- which in those days took minimum of six months to fix any bugs and iterated very rarely on anything -- would have to fix that glitch EVENTUALLY, since a useless salvage item didn't make much sense long term.
So, I set up buy orders in five regions and tended them sufficiently to keep my orders the best. For months.
Eventually I took a couple of months off -- my second vacation from EVE if I recall -- and when I came back, I suddenly had six billion ISK worth of armor plates because there was a recipe for them and they were now one of the bottleneck salvage items.
I sold heavily because I figured the price would eventually decline from its peak (and it has!) but I still have a billion ISK or so in armor plates sitting around. I am frugal with my losses and expenditures, so I've never had to worry about being broke from that day to this.
Buying worthless items and waiting for shifts in the game to increase their value has been pretty good to me. But I'm starting to wonder about this five year old stack of ten thousand or so of Zor's Custom Navigation Links. Maybe someday CCP will rebalance all the implants and I will suddenly feel smart, but I am not holding my breath. |

While I haven't made billions upon untold billions of ISK, I did end up finding out from a friend about incursions. At the time, I was extremely new to the game (I'm not exactly an old salt now) and I had no idea what I wanted to do... and my skills can attest to that. A friend suggested that despite the extreme variation in skills, I could probably work towards getting into incursions in about 2-3 weeks of skill training. It would be a bit of a shitfit, but it was (barely) acceptable.
Finally! Something to work towards! No longer will I randomly accumulate skill for no particular goal! I had a set goal to work towards for the first time ever. I set a goal. And then I achieved it. No longer did I plug in the random cool-looking skill and train it. No longer was I trying to train all four gunnery types at once. I think that, more than any money I made from Incursions, was the real wake-up call. If you set a goal in EVE, no matter how lofty, and work at it one step at a time, you can pretty much do anything in EVE. Being able to run incursions isn't exactly sky-high, I realize, but it was still a huge accomplishment for me.
Oh, and the 3-4 billion I made in a few of days of Incursions was quite nice, too. |
