I've been in Eve now for about 7 months. Like most I started out as a carebear then migrated into low sec and met up eventually with HINQ who were later subsumed into BDSM. At the time BDSM was mainly involved in empire wars but after around a month of being there the corp went pirate. I struggled with the whole pirate thing initially having been an anti-pirate in my early Eve life but I have come to realise how much poorer this game would be without us.
So here are some thoughts as to why we benefit the game.
1. We kill ships, alot of ships...and all the attendant equipment on them (BDSM can manage 100 ships on a good day). Think about what this does to the Eve economy...it keeps it moving, creates a demand and allows the production corps to make a profit.
2. We give an edge to low sec. What would be the thrill of running a mission or hunting in low sec without the threat or danger of dastardly ebil piwates? Low sec should be dangerous..that's why it's low sec.
3. We provide a useful evolutionary service. If you're going to fly in low sec then you need to watch what you're doing and be careful. If you know there are pirates around you either learn how to avoid them, learn how to trap and kill them, or die. In other words...we force people in low sec to get better at playing the game.
4. We give the pirate hunters something to do...nothing quite so fun as trying to evade 5 pirate hunters that are after you and few things as fun as hunting down a pirate. Some guys last week set up a really good gank trap and did manage to get me....Kudos to them.
So in summary...<3 your piwates. This game would be poorer and more care bearfsh without us.

pirates are indeed a needed aspect to the game and without them things would be alot more boring. besides to get to me the carebears gotta go through you, then once they get to 0.0 and there all excited about new prospects just before thier cloan activation. i only have issues really with "wannabe" pirates. _______________________________________________

we need pirates so noobs like me get a good lesson in how to use a scanner. Much thanks to the member of black fleet who showed me how to use it, and kept their word about not exploding me if I undocked for the lesson.

Star Wars Galaxies used to be a nasty place to play, until SOE decided that all people wanted to do was "kill, loot, repeat" on NPCs, and that negative aspects of games caused people to leave.
Having everything rosey and bright makes for a lame game. Harsh, uncompromising and exciting is the way to go

Cheers... erm.. Yarrr!
Always fun to Pirate.. victim or winner.. doesn't matter.. the only thing I don't like is pod killing.. but I can spare them the chance and leave quickly after I get blown up.. didn't think about that the last time.
And thats while solo miners should stick to high sec space.. always love an afk miner...

Couldn't help but picture you sitting behind a desk like Emanuel Zorg (Gary Oldman) in the Fifth Element giving his death and distruction speach. Was about ready to ask if you needed a pat on the back before you died choking on a cheery.

This man speaks the truth. SOE sux, CCP is cool, they haven't let the carebears ruin the game with their cries for NO risk HIGH reward game changing ideas. I was about to give up on MMOs when I found EVE, thanks CCP

To misquote Sin City: "I love pirates. No matter what you do to 'em, you don't feel bad."
Complaining about the pirates in EVE is like complaining about the mines in minesweeper.
It's a part of the game, and one that makes it feel as 'alive' as it is. I've never done it, and one day I may, but in the meantime, I'll happily chase down those of -5 and below :)

when you said you kill 100 ships a day and that helps the econemy because industry corps will be in bisiness still and it gets money around , well . if you think about it all the money that is generated in eve comes from agents so your only about 3% of eves money the creator of dreams! Don't make arbitary statements because it ridicules your argument which is basically a fairly good one. You can't say 3% or 5% or 20% because you simply don't know. It's more reasonable to say that agents account for a large percentage of cash generated. Whilst this is true, as far as I am aware agents don't normally make very many ships. I didn't suggest that we were the main way that people generated money, I suggested that the industry related corps make a great deal of money out of selling us and other people ships and equipment. This is a good thing for eve and helps drive the player realted economy.
