So with all this talk about doomsdays in lowsec again and yadda yadda, it got me to thinking....what would a giant 1000 pilot sized fleet with super capitals and titans look like as they slugged it out thousands of miles above a planet? What would doomsdays being traded back and forth look like from a lonely hilltop or some populated city square. Would the giant beams of light even be able to be seen?
I don't do much art, but I'd be very interested to see somebody's vision of this represented in some photoshop or some other artisitc medium, as well as other opinions. Unfiltered for the masses.

So you think it'd have to be night for them t be noticeable?
When I think of doomsdays, i think of something rivaling or surpassing an atomic-bomb type flash/explosion. Surely that could be seen during the day if it was close enough in orbit? Unfiltered for the masses.

I thought Poof 2: Doomsday Boogaloo depicted the event much better.

UaE sat atop the quiet lonely hill, wearing only a loincloth and munching an ancient Earth delicacy known as a subway sandwich. Between bites of epic deliciousness, he would glance up at the sky. So serene and beautiful from this vantage point, a stark contrast to the bloody fray that was unfolding hundreds of kilometers above. The twinkling stars were infrequently accented by slightly more radiant blue flashes, a signal that untold hundreds of lives were just lost. If he strained his eyes, he could almost make out the faint stilettos of light that were the gigantic "doomsday" weapons of the titan fleet. So pretty..
UaE smiled to himself. Who uses doomsdays anyway? He chuckled a little and then choked on a pickle as he came to a grave realization.. this was lowsec.
Madness and panic gripped him. If this could happen here.. then.. my god.. the implications are stagger... Then he calmed down, realized that you cant doomsday on the forums, stripped off his loincloth, slathered himself with grape jelly and ran through the fields in the moonlight.
Since the cessation of their usefulness is imminent, may I appropriate your belongings? |

I was beginning to wonder where you had gone. Good to get some comic relief from the mindless blathering about jump ranges.

Probably not a whole lot. If the fight is close enough to the planet for people on the surface to actually see anything, everyone on the facing side would be dead due to falling debris, massive explosions, and tidal waves caused by titans (see the Titan chronicle). Far enough away to prevent an Endor holocaust, and you won't be able to see anything without telescopes. |

I would have to say this is more likely the possibility. It's not like air support, it's wayyyy higher. Although on a clear night, who knows? It may be visible.
But are spaceships real?
Lol in all seriousness, whether or not that battle was actually a space battle, it is very possible to see the battle in the sky, if only very faintly. If they're too close and able to be seen vividly...

Considering cruise & torp missiles already carry the equivalent of a few megatons of explosive power, you can be sure that they'll see the doomsdays being fired from the surface as bright flashes & beams between starts that drift across the nightsky.
RL example: ISS is about 100 meters across at an orbit altitude of 330 to 430 km, yet we can see it as a very bright moving star. A titan is about 15 km. To see it as bright as as the ISS, the titan can orbit at a distance of roughly 60.000 Km. Considering a titan is a massive structure, unlike the ISS; it can probably be seen from even higher altitudes as a very bright star (and be seen as objects through small magnifiers)
It's even likely the eve starships can shine even brighter, as there are satellites that orbit us that can shine as bright as the moon when their solarpanels are just right . A rare occurrence, but replace satellite with Minmatar ship with panels, and you'll get some real big & bright flashes, just as they turn & move in their orbit.
So yes, a Titan battle with doomsdays will surely be noticed. And the doomsday going off will probably be spotted across the solarsystem as bright flashes, like stars on the nightsky popping briefly in existence, due to the sheer energy they release. Came hoping for cool imagery, left dissapointed...... BUT... I would imagine if a doomsday went off that close to a planet it would be visible during the day (unlike what some have suggested.) Granted I have no appropriate knowledge/education of how such things work so I could be way wrong, but yea. |
