Edited by: SavageThrash on 13/08/2006 21:29:46 Well my old "hp pallvilion" is getting a little out of date, I want to start buildnt a new comp and was wondering what your guys opinion would be on this case and power supply setup.
Linkage
I wont be getting a mobo or vid card till vista and dx10 comes out. You think i should just hold off on the case and power supply all together until then?
EDIT: forgot link tehehe

Buying an A64 now is insanity. Get a Core 2 duo 6600. Check out reviews at anandtech or the like... They shine in nearly every area..game performance, encoding, power usage, overclockability. ...

Sounds like a nice setup there gandalf but i dont got alotta money to spend this has gotta be a budget comp.
any other ideas for a good budget gaming comp?
I tend to run ATI cards and intel procs as i find them even better then the dual core amd for multi tasking. Even my single core intel seems to multi task better then dual core amd's.
I would like to get a good case and ps so that i can upgrade my comp without having to buy a new case and ps all the time. Thats the one thing that i dont like with my current case is its hard to upgraade cause its so small. a nice large case with a good ps to let me grow and expand later on would be nice :)

Edited by: Sokratesz on 14/08/2006 09:35:47 If you're on a budget go with the Core 2 duo E6300..very powerful gaming chip, runs cool -> low noise and only around 175$. Pick a nice asus / abit mobo (cant really go wrong with either for the budget models), 1GB of ddr2 (2x512 so you can upgrade later!) and something like a 7900GT and youre good to go for a long time, while spending only about 700$, depending on the other components ofc. ...

Thanks for the help guys, minus that one guy :P
I think i will wait until vista and get a dx10 card but still try to get a budget proc and mobo. The one thing with computers now a days is that the processing power is comin galot more from the vid card then the main proc, i remember when the onboard video chipset was usualy plenty for the graphics in the games and it was the proc that was slowing the game down. Now its opposite, my 5 year old p4 is doing fine but my vid card is way out of date.

Very true, but dont rule out the CPU just yet. A new A64 or (preferably ;)) a core 2 duo will hugely improve your game experience over a relatively old P4 or Athlon K7. As more and more games incorporate destructible terrain and real time physics, the CPU will have to do a huge share of brute force calculations to feed the VGA the 'what to render...and where?' clause. (unless of course you have an Ageia PhysX card but theyre overkill and overpriced atm)
If you are not hurting, waiting in this case will do you good. Vista and DX10 will bring alot of new goodies, and by the time they are out, the current hype around the new Intel chip series will be over and prices slightly lower. ...

Edited by: Sokratesz on 14/08/2006 20:50:02 Yes, a dual core in every sense of the word. Intel had a bad year with their slapped-together presler dual core but now theyre 'back' with an all new design with all the goodies, and as the benchmarks show they are whiping the floor with the A64 and Athlon X2.
If you are not hurting, wait for Vista and DX10 while saving some cash, then piece together a nice system. ...

Funny you should say that, it just died.

Unfortunatly no current videocard can nor will support DX10. That is, the difference between 9 and 10 will be minimal (as opposed to the shader revolution that dx 9 brought over 8.1), so if you do decide to buy now, you wont lose that much in the end.
So yeah, as i said before... Core 2 duo E6300 (dual core 1.83Ghz w/ 64 bit and 2mb cache), some cheap asus or abit motherboard (no need for sli or 6 sata raid huh ;), 1 gig of DDR-2 533 and a 7900GT series videocard. ...

Ok well i have figured out a game plan i think.
I will build a half decent comp with 2 gb ram, e6600, board 1 or board 2
I cant really tell much difference in these 2 boards other then 1 is crossfire compatible and has a second pciex slot. I also take it conroe is another name for the intel dual cores?
as for the vid card i will buy a beater for 100$ or so to get me buy until vista comes out then i shoul dh ave a decent amount of money to buy a nice card. I am assuming that the vid card will be the only thing that has to change to support dx10 and this proc and mobo will be fine?
Thanks for all your help :)

Edited by: Sokratesz on 15/08/2006 12:11:24 Get the cheaper one, it has an intel chipset, Nforce 4 is the biggest load of crap ever to be brought to the intel platform. Conroe is the same as core 2 duo, aye, and yes, DX10 is only a matter of videocards so your plan will work.

Yeah don't skimp on the power supply, it's going to be feeding electricity to every piece of circuitry in your computer... you want to make sure it does a good job of it. Voltage spikes can cause all sorts of problems.

Come Saturday this is what i am going to get most likely so if i am making a big bobo let me know so i can fix it :)
CPU case ram Mobo PSU Vid card Werid?
Why is there a rpice difference in those 2 cards? is it because of the "hyper" memory or somtething?
BTW i know i am cheap and the vid card is junk but its just until dx10 :) i also have about 85$ to spend on anything that i have overlooked or is maybe lacking (psu?)

Edited by: Epoch on 18/08/2006 02:23:37 just a couple things:
that mobo only has 6 mounting holes. it wont be in the case as securely as it would if it had 9.. like most mobos. for just a couple moments, i read about that board... and it has problems with ocz memory.
1 120mm and 1 80mm in the case.. you can do better then that for the price. i use to have a centurion too. not that exact one.. but one similar. had the see through panel etc. that front 80mm is a pain in the ass to clean and offers little airflow. lian li cases are all aluminum, not steel + an aluminum bezel like that one (and my old case). most have removable mb trays and front panels for easy cleaning. also, the expansion slots on the centurions have these little plastic clips that go over the expansion slots to add a little more support.. they break easily.
