I am Caldari (picked it on a whim the first day I logged into eve) but I think if I were starting over today I would have chosen Minmatar (just because!).
I'm thinking of training in minmatar ships since I have the support skills somewhat done anyway.
I am curious about how many of you have done this and what your reasons were (I just like a variety of ships to play with).
How has it worked out?

I can basically fly all non-capital ships of all races, I think that'll be true of a lot of players. The reason I trained everything is because I got bored with my ships, so I trained another races', then got bored again so trained another...

I fly Caldari and Gal ships up to BS Main reasons for this were: -Need Gal Cruiser skill so I could fly my Gila -I trained turrets (Merlin, Moa, Ferox), so when I got to BS I realised there was not a BS option for me, so trained for Megathron
Has worked out well for me, I love the Mega and Brutix and now I'm flying the Astarte as well since the Nighthawk doesn't work for me (missile skills wise)
I have the other frig skills for Min and Amarr already, and I expect that I'll end up training the cruiser and BS skills for them as well as I either a. Get bored and want to try something different, or b. I get new faction ships that need the skills
As my turrent support skills are high, it's not too much trouble to train up to use the other two turret types.

One race all the way up to T2s, and working for capitals. Can fly frigates, cruisers, and haulers of most, (And by extension, destroyers and battlecruisers) but not necessarily very well.

_o/ I Can fly any tech 1 ship (except for capital ships) and all Gallente tech 2 ships.
Originally by: James Saumerez and what your reasons were
Because I could.

Quite well. More flexibility on choice of ship for the particular job at hand is nice.

In a few months i'll be able to fly every non-capital ship, including freighters.
In about a year i'll be able to fly all ships, full stop.
Just because i'm an idiot, mostly ^^

Well i can fly anything Caldari, Mini or Gal (except capitals, where I fly gal). T1 frigs to T2 command ships (also recons, indys, etc). I got BS 5 in Mini and Gal; all in all over 16mil in Spaceship command.
Now for the actual reason of this madness is simply the fact that in the old days there was nothing else to train. So I just kept training other races' ships, then came indys, assault frigs, HACs, etc.
I never really trained an Industrial or Science skill (maybe got like 500k sp in both, out of over 47mil sp) and have 95% of my sp in combat oriented skills, which of course includes spaceship command.
Its nice to know that your not affected by nerfs (balances )much and can jump into the latest 'flavor of the month' ship and pwnz0r all n00bs (sorry couldn't resist ). The only spaceship command skills I regreted training were BC 5 and Commandships, thats was wasted 1.5mil sp that I could have put into capital skills.
Currently training up Gal Carrier 5.

Even as a relatively young player, I fly Min and Gall to BS.
My reasoning is that no one race has the versatility needed for all situations. I haven't even made the jump to PvP where it really matters, but I know that for some L4 missions I want a Tempest, and some are much easier in a Domi. I like the Vexor and Thorax better among cruisers than the Stabber and the Rupture (personal choice), but I like the Rifter better than anything Gallente.
If you're gonna fly minmatar for the support skills, be careful-some minmatar are armor tankers and you probably don't have the skills for that. One ship you may like b/c it allows you to use your shield tank and heavy missiles plus get a taste of rust in your mouth is the Cyclone.

But all are easier in a Raven :)

I can actually Fly all of the races frig's, cruisers, destroyers, battle cruisers and most haulers. This has come from more or less being required more then anything else. I find that having the ability to hop into any craft that is on the market and jump out to support fleet ops, mining ops where the only hauling ship is a bestower or a mark III, it's a wonderful benifit of having all the skills. I have caldari battle ships to 4, but have trained none of the other BS skills as I haven't needed them as of yet, but I do feel a BS training occuring in the near future to get them all to 3.

Ive thought about it, but it brings in to much extra 'wasted' training time. When/if i ever finish maxing all the skills relevant to gallente ships ill have a look at the other race's ships. T2 ships may looks like a good idea (as they use a universal skill like 'assualt ships') but you have to remember you'll have to train up the weapons needed aswell.

Edited by: R3aliti on 15/08/2006 02:35:05 All Ships/All Races up to Battleship to at least LVL 4. Yes including Interceptor, Covert Opps, Battle Cruiser, HAC and all Industrials. Have all of the BPO for all of the Tech I ships ME:30 PE:10 - That was the original reason for being able to pilot them all was to get them to where I wanted to sell them, of course this was before the Freighter was in game. Things are so much easier now. LOL

Amarr, Min, and Cal BS at IV, plus all their Indies, including L T2 guns for Min and Amarr. Also, all Amarr and Cal T2 frigs. One of these days I'll get around to Min and Gal too. Also I'll add T2 cruisers for either Cal or Min (have Amarr already). When the new Cal BS comes out I'll probably also add L T2 Hybrids to my skills, after I finish up Command Ships' prereqs.
I'd say it's pretty common for vets to be able to fly lots of race's ships since we tend to run out of things to train in one field, unless we want to be ultra-specialized, i.e. T2 at V for all gun/missile types at all sizes.

I can fly Caldari and Amarr ships up to BS level, and Gallente up to BC. I started as Caldari but didn't like the fact that fleet PvP pretty much had me stuck in a Scorpion for all eternity, so I trained Amarr (plus we were in Catch and I wanted something that would kill Sanshas better). Then once I had armor tanking skills up it seemed like a good idea to try Gallente. I don't like Gallente BS so I'll probably never train it, but I like the option of being able to jump into different ships. I can fly minnie frigs as well.

I can fly Gallente, Minmatar and Caldari up to battleship level, though I'm slightly better skilled in Gallente.
As for reasons, I just got bored and didn't have enough ships to play with. :)

I used to fly only Gallente ships, had every T1 ship availabe to them.
Then one morning I logged on to have a look at my Blasterrax once more. Something snapped, I just suddenly craved variation, as long as it was not Caldari.
As I had all the support skills needed (Decent armour-tanking abilities, skills for cap-injectors etc.) I went for Amarr, in a short while I had lv3 large laser turrests and l3 Amarr battleship skills in my head.
Then later it all cooled, and I finaly found time to focus on boosting my drone skills and realiced how much they rock, I mostly fly Gallente ships now, seeing as though I'm a dronehore
I'm planning to go for Minmatar BS skills later but this needs shieldtanking skills, projectile turrets and the whole deal, so I'm keeping that on ice until my Gallente and Amarr ships have some serious boosting in effectiveness.
That's about it, just to bad I basicly broke, but that will be fixed soon Wished I had a better sig than this |

Can fly Caldari up to BS, Amarr up to BS (cause I wanted a mining Apoc) and by end of the week Gallente BS (because the Apoc sucks for mining - bad tank especially with shield skills and to lil' CPU power).
Once I get the general skills (engineering and whatnot) to V that should also quickly enable me to fly AFs and HACs of these three races.
Maybe I train Minnie later, too, cause just as you I like having options in the stuff I fly. Was an easy decision cause the character is a jack-of-all-trades anyway, half of my non-learning SP is in mining, half in combat (yeah, I know how that potentially sucks ) --

Not so true solider. I'm a very old player that can only fly 2 races... I can fly caldari frigates, cruisers, and BS but I can't use missiles at all really.
I prob have about 1 million skill points total in caldari ship command.
Now my true ability is gallante. I can fly just about every ship in gallante that is used for pvp. Ceptors, cruisers, Hacs, BS, commands ships, Capital Ships. Not only that but the only weapons i have trained are needed for gallante all T2. I have 33 mil + skill points in PVP just for gallante.
I did this for a few reason..
I started playing 1 year after the game came out and i felt this was the only way to even up the playing feild.
A player that is specialized in only 1 race has a lot better skills to fly a ship then a player that can fly 30 different ships. The time he takes to train all the ships i can train my drones, or armor tanking skill to the highest lvl.
Although im sick of gallante the things i can do in the ships is pretty sick. Take on players with 50-60 mil skill points and win because they have skillz in everything...
ok now you might ask why caldari ships but no weapons... Well caldari uses hybird weapons but gets no boucnes really... When i started playing the game ECM in fleetbattles would be enough to turn the tables... So the Scorp was my ship when i first started to PVP in. You could jamm 2-3 BS and stay in a fight for a decent amout of time.. Not only this but the ship was cheap only 55-60 mil back in the day.
I have very high electronic skills to fly a Scorp one might think this would make me not so specialized in Gallante but with the new recon ships of gallante they use the same skillz the scorp required.

It took me a while to figure out what I like best, so I trained up Minnie, Amar and Galente ships + weapons to a lowish level first.
I finally decided to go Minmatar fully, mostly because of my fear of specialisation (sounds weird, I know). I can put time in Guns, Drones, Armor and Shield Tanking, Missiles and have a use for all of them on one Minnie ship or another. Should I ever decide I want to train up for another race, then I'll still be able to use tons of my skills, while also noticing an improvement on my set-up each time I finish a gun/missile/shield/armor/drone skill (flying a Rupture atm, often with launchers).

I fly both Minm and Caldari. I should take a month and train Galante Frig and Cruiser 5 since I already have T2 hybrid weapons. Eventually I probably will.
But never Ammar.
