Hello everyone!
New pilot here. I've been poking around in EVE Online these last two weeks on a trial account, and I've liked it so much I decided to subscribe!
I figured I'd say hello. I've been a long time strategy and Sci-fi gamer. I had heard about EVE Online in the past, but I really made it out to be some kind of space ship simulator. Boy was I wrong!
I've done my best at reading up on various guides. I've found Eve University to be particularly helpful. But one of the big things I've been scratching my head at is the seemingly large amount of information that is wrong. Or, I think is wrong. Not on that site, but all over the internet.
I've seen many websites that talk about think (I think) don't exist anymore. Learning skills seem to have been removed. The ships have changed their slots and skill requirements. I was even looking for an add-on to help me track thing in the game, but some are totally wrong or broken (like EVE HQ).
Am I missing some kind of central hub of updated information? Even the EVE Wiki is wrong half the time. It's especially bad with anything relating to industry, which is what I'm the most interested in doing. I realize a lot of that has changed recently, but I'm a lot more skeptical about anything I find relating to EVE than I feel like I should be.
Does anyone have any go-to resources that are up to date? Even if I find factual information, most of the guides just seem to be talking about a whole different game.
Thanks for the help! I look forward to flying with all of you.

You sound like you already found the best maintained third party site I know of, the uni wikis.
The Eve community has produced volumes of material about the game, but with any game this old, stuff naturally goes out of date. Sorry.
When I started, I found it easier to read everything, then ask folk how it currently works ( if different at all ) for the specific thing I was learning in game.
A lot of specifics changed over the years, but the more general stuff was just tweaked.
TL;dr I recommend reading everything then just double check on current mechanics for the activity your currently trying to do. Uni wiki is generally considered the best maintained third party site on this forum, but even it can be a but out of date.

There's some good info on skills and such in this thread, ignore the guys promoting other things, just look at the skill set you'll need to do industry.
Good luck and welcome.
Have fun.

Hello! Welcome to EVE.
You are correct that there is a lot of misinformation on the web. EVE has gone through some major changes in the last few years and since most of the resources are provided by third parties, they may or may not be updated.
Most recently, the entire industry system was revamped, wormholes have seen big changes, and all the ships in the game have been (or are about to be) re-balanced. We are also just embarking on a module re-balance (often referred to as tiercide, because they are trying to make all modules useful for a certain niche instead of having "tiers" where some modules become obsolete because there are better options. This is similar to what happened with the ship rebalance).
All these changes are great things (well depending on who you talk to. There's been quite a backlash with some of the wormhole changes). However, it does require a bit of searching to find good information on them! As you've found, EVE Uni generally has pretty good information. There's a few others...
-Here's CCP's official method of communication for new releases (dev blogs). (see the blogs around the Crius expansion for industrial information)
-EFT is an third-party fitting tool that allows you to design ship fittings. You can even import your character API to see how your skills affect the stats of the ship. It's great because it allows you to fiddle and optimize without spending money in-game, and it is kept up-to-date for new releases. Pyfa is another similar tool which some people prefer.
-If using battleclinic, or another similar site, try filtering fittings by date. For most ships the slot layout hasn't changed in the last few months so the most recent fittings will be good by that standard. (Possibly only that standard. Batlleclinic allows anyone to post fittings so you can't be sure of the quality and it's always best to check them yourself in EFT with a healthy dose of common sense!)
-For general ship knowledge check out this blog which has some great guides and videos. It's mostly PvP focused, but a lot of the information is applicable in other areas of the game. Some of it is a tad outdated, but there's still plenty to learn from there.
Finally...yes learning skills have been removed. That was a great change, because it was quite silly to have to spend time training useless skills just to make your other skills train faster. We have remaps and implants for that now. www.ensignyooch.wordpress.com

Yeah industry's just been completely overhauled so most of what you read up about it will be slightly off, missing key mechanisms or flat out wrong now. the important thing to note is the date it was written (if it was longer than about six months ago its fairly likely outdated) As mentioned above, you will want to read up on the relevant ddev blogs and the comment threads (which will be linked in the blog). You can skip to the next dev post in these threads by clicking the blue tag on their portraits.
You should do well here,
Also bonus advice for doing your own research. attitude will get you much much farther in eve than isk or skillpoints o7 =]I[= |

Hmz. EVEHQ is working for me.
But you are correct...but this is always true with the internet....there is some incorrect information on it.
But what did you expect, 11 year old game, with up to this year 2 expansions a year, so stuff changed. So with anything you read about EVE, check the date...if it is older, verify it is still true.
The official EVE wiki is horribly out of date and the ISD dept that is in control looks like it's sacked or something (which IMO CCP should look into as new players will look at the wiki and get wrong information).
As for the industry, that is because this summer there was a COMPLETE overhaul on how industry works.
The go-to resource....in game players, specially the "older" ones. They know from playing how things work and there are plenty of helpful people around
Good channel for this: Help Chat - Reloaded. It's a player ran, unofficial help chat. But because it's player ran, there is better monitoring to keep trolls out then there is with the official help chat (which relies on a CCP employee or an ISD volunteer to be online to be moderated). Thing is to check dates on those guides, however lately CCP has been adding a lot of helpful hints in the actual game it self. So the need for skimming through all of those guides has been lessened considerably in the last few years of expansions.
Official rookie help is poor state partly because of trolls and because there are a 100 people asking questions all at the same time and that you can only spend 30days on that channel so even if we vets would like to help we can't or not on a rookie channel at least. |

Wow, thanks for all the responses!
I'll just have to start making bookmarks to the right places it seems. I'll also make sure to ask people directly. I have tried to the help channel, but it does get pretty jumbled. Maybe I'll try the Reloaded version!
That's a great tip on the new EVE HQ. I only found information about it being closed. Very useful information all around. They weren't lying when they said EVE Online had a good community! |

We're even better of a community when you want to get shot in the face multiple times and want to come back for more.
Most of the info you find on google from 2013 is almost in every single case outdated, you can try to use the search tools to lower the time to a month or 6 months depending on search results. If you cannot find something specific on one topic or three, start a new thread in this forum section and you should get fast responses. |

Join some industrial corp. You may even save some ISK on taxes ;) Ppl there will help you more, than just reading outdated stuff and then digging through developer blogs to see what was changed. Just be carefull not to get into the war you are not ready yet as a newbee. |

What Adrie said.
This is NCQA, the whole reason it exist...Q&A.

this game stayed mostly unchanged for a good long time. When new stuff came out it was new meaning completely additional to the game so old info was still ok. In recent years CCP decided it was going to rebalance the game and changed a lot of stuff and is continuing to change stuff. Ships have been changed industry has been changed and now all the modules are getting changed. So there is a lot of old outdated information out there.
That being said even before all the changes there was bad info out there as this game is just complex and very difficult for one person to fully grasp. CCP is trying to change in game info to make it more intuitive and in some respects has succeeded.
You've been given some good advise here already so I won't duplicate that but would like to add that it will take some vigilance on your part to sort through the info just keep in mind just because some who's been playing the game for 10 years said it does not make it true. |

I'd have to add to the above advice that while research is good, don't be afraid to ask ask ask questions. Much like ship fitting, you learn a lot by the mistakes of others. I started out as a miner and manufacturer in high sec, and now I don't do that much due to extreme competition in most areas. So if you're dead set on industry, ask around, and do some looking for a good spot to set up shop. I provide ammo and small ships for a wormhole corp and that suits my inner industrialist fine. But the love I found in the game was exploration. Lots of fun and isk there for me. So in short, try everything before settling, you won't regret it.

EVE's official wiki is an embarassment. I can't count how many times people have talked in the first person in their edits e.g. about fittings on ship pages, and it's out of date.
UniWiki puts it to shame. As you have noted, Uni is out of date on some aspects too. EVE changes a lot (even more with the new short release cycle) so some stuff is bound to fall through the cracks. Lots of it is reliable, but the best way to verify is to ask for help in-game or test it out yourself. |
