Very good question. At this point, even after the start up, the corp hangar will not load and the market is borked. We shall see.

Edited by: Acinonyx Jubatus on 16/08/2006 12:38:15 Just curious, about how long does it take to load a system?
Seeing as now and previously, it won't let me beyond the character selection screen for my main.
"Logging in with Acinonyx Jubatus" "Failed" "Your character is located within(*insert system here, won't say the system unless I need to*). Which is currently being loaded, please wait."
Not whining, just curious as to how long it'll be like that, since like I said, can't do much at the Character selection screen.
--Edit, ok, it let me in now... guess it's about 10 or more minutes for that particular system.

I was working on the database server at downtime. When I noticed that the DB server was at 100% CPU without having anything running except the website connections, I decided to do failover. A failover moves the SQL Server process to our standby server and thus flushes all cache to disk and the server has to re-read everything from the disk arrays. Doing this causes lag after startup and in this case, the lag was so much that a cluster health check failed and our administration scripts started a cleanup process thats supposed to kill any rouge processes that might be hanging after cluster shutdown.
After this experience I guess we will have to change the healthcheck to fail multiple times before taking the cluster down. ------ Valar Database admin - Server operations team CCP Games How to write a good bugreport |

This is the same as the rouge drones we experience so frequently on the forums?

Valar, A few questions,
1. Are you aware why the DB was spiking at 100% CPU at downtime? This obviously needs looking into.
2. Do you think doing a failover was the right course to take? Could you not of found the process cauing the 100% CPU spike and killed it? Or at least investigated at that time what process was causing it?
3. Your administration script needs checking, If this is suppose to kill a process thats using a huge amount of CPU it didn't work, and tbh you cannot rely on a script to do the work for you anyway.
I understand that these things happen, but you need to narrow down the amount of times it is happening tbh.
my 2 pence.

I understand it that the problem with 100% CPU happened on the database server, then the failover caused problems on the game cluster, because it couldn't access the database fast and that triggered the fail check on the cluster, which wasn't supposed to happen in that case. (Well, just my interpretation of Valar post. Love it though, if we get some insights of what happened. ) -------------------------- Post with your main !!!111 |
