I'm thinking about turning my Minmatar character into a thief/pirate, is there a skill that will allow me to/increase my chances of breaking into a secure container?

you cant break into secure cans
unless you know/guess the password.
hacking is used in cosmos missions

Though the ability to hack into secure cans would be a lot of fun...

I was thinking the same thing the other day... Something along the lines of:
Hacking level 1 - breaks 20% of the password level 2 - breaks 30% level 3 - breaks 50% level 4 - breaks 70% level 5 - breaks 90%
Would make a good use of the codebreaker module outside of the missions. Then again, people might complain that cans are getting raided. If that's the case, maybe they could fix the aggro time for people who pick locks and loot the cans.
(first post on the forum, yay! thanks ccp for fixing the looping login issue )

yes just fly up to a secure can and try 1234 or asdf you'd be amazed how many will open.

1)Buy a can, not a station container. 2) Load it into any ship it will fit into. 3) Jettison the can 2000 meters from any other object. 4) Right click on the can and choose ANCHOR FOR CORP or ANCHOR FOR SELF. (Not sure of the wording there.) 5) Add a password that isn't 1234 or ASDF. Or give it that password and send me the location and contents. LOL. (No, really) 6) Remember, littering is a crime. Also, I'm sure some people pop cans in 0.0 just because they CAN. Get it, CAN... Jeez, no respect.

I recall it being 5000 meters for each object. At least I got that message lately when deploying containers in mining fields.
Not sure if it has something to do with the skill level of Anchoring, as I only have rank 1 :-P

What would be neat is if the hacking skill allowed one to break into a secure can in a certain amount of time. Say level 1 = 60 minutes, each skill level reduces the time it takes by 15%. When someone starts hacking into your can, you'd get an eve-mail stating this. If you can get your butt over there in time to stop them, then all good.
Building on this, perhaps you could then seed different secure cans with varying security levels (a multiplier on the base time it would take to hack into).

Yeah, that would be awesome. 'Cause I don't really want it to be easy to break into the cans, I want to be able to, but I wan't it to be something of a challenge.
lol, though it doesn't look like I'm going to be a pirate after all, I've just been pod killed by a player pirate, so now I'm gearing up to hunt him down, if I find him he's a dead man, but thats if I find him. After him, well... the bounties on pirates are freaking huge.
