Ambush: At the beginning of a withdraw step, this ship may deal X damage to an attacking ship.
Target Jam: As the beginning of a target step, up to 1 defending ship of your choice cannot use its command abilities this battle phase.
Since the target step comes after the withdraw step, this means that you cannot Target Jam an ambusher, correct? Furthermore, as the game currently stands now, isn't Patrol the only command that is really a valid target for Jamming?
I know in our local group, we are considering allowing Jam to undo Ambush as well, as that seems to be in the spirit of the rule if not the text, but I was wondering if maybe we were just doing something wrong. |

No.
Since target jam works only at the target step, and ambush does its thing in the withdraw step, it will have already worked and thus using target jam on it doesn't do anything. Basically target jamming is useful against patrol only.
Buff target jam :)

Technically, Target Jam can work against Ambush... if you end up going into a second round of combat. Many folks forget that you can ambush in the second and subsequent rounds, because the battle phase is so often finished in one round of combat. -------------------------- Just here for the CCG. :) |

Target Jam only lasts to the end of the battle phase, IIRC; so, by the time the ship gets to ambush the second time, the Target Jam has worn off.

Oh? That's what I get for posting away from my cards, I thought it was "until end of battle." -------------------------- Just here for the CCG. :) |

I found myself puzzling over the 'Target jam' ability last night and I'm really having trouble understanding it's use. Additionally, I need a clarification:
1. Target jam only effects 'Command Abilities'. Is this just the ęCommandĘ or could it also jam the ships abilities? For example my Thrasher pays 2 isk for 1 point of extra damage. Could this ability be jammed??
2. Assuming that this effects only Commands, whatĘs the point? I think the only good use for this would be to Jam the Patrol command, which isnĘt exactly what IĘd expect from target jamming.
Have I missed something obvious here?

You haven't missed anything. Target Jam only works on patrol.
While this isn't all that powerful right now, you will see more commands in the expansion sets of EVE: The Second Genesis.

Target jamming should work on mining and trading too ! :) That'd be neat.
Anyway, kind of an unimpressive ability at the moment really :)

Correct, since ambush came first.
edit: As for ambushes the next round, well, you might want to try killing the ambushers in the first round, altho the way ambush works, it really would make sense if it was a one tim per battle kinda thing.
I mean, how do you ambush someone you're already in combat with?

Uh, cloaking device? Or perhaps judicious use of the Picard Maneuver. -------------------------- Just here for the CCG. :) |
