whats the point though? clearly pluto's orbit is very different from the rest of the planets, but why change the status quo... now they have to reprint all those astronomy books. i dont see the harm in leaving pluto a planet and just saying no other body with plutos properties can be a planet and were only letting pluto stay a planet because its always been that way.
does anyone know what are the exact requirements now to have planetary status? ---------------------

And if we'd always thought like that, Uranus, Neptune (and Pluto) would never have been planets in the first place. Science isn't about keeping things are they are - it's about getting things RIGHT, in the light of new evidence. ________________________________________________

We havent got it RIGHT, we have just reclassified it to suit ourselves. Its not like our understanding of pluto has been enhanced in any way.
The only RIGHT definition for a planet is this: whatever we choose to call a planet.

The core of science is challenging tradition, reanalyzing subjectively and if neccesary changign what has been considered true.
Pluto as a planet is just a casualty of the war against traditional superstition and sentimentality.

blonde detectors can screw up when the user is blonde.
but seriously, who cares? or rather, why care? oh noes, arbitrary distinctions of definitions of celestial objects are slightly different now, time to make a fuss.

It doesn't particularly matter what the definition of a planet is, as long as it's consitently applied. A bunch of large objects around the solar system have been discovered that are roughly the size of Pluto. So if you consider Pluto a planet, then there are at least a few dozen other objects that should also be considered a planet. Either way, the mnemonic devices we all learned in fourth grade get thrown out.
Previously, there weren't any guidelines to what a "planet" is, which is what caused all the trouble above. We want to keep the status of being a planet somewhat special, so that meant Pluto had to go. Sucks to be the schools who have to update their textbooks, but it's great news for the textbook publishers.
The IAU definition is at http://www.iau2006.org/mirror/www.iau.org/iau0603/index.html. Taken from there:
Quote: The IAU members gathered at the 2006 General Assembly agreed that a "planet" is defined as a celestial body that (a) is in orbit around the Sun, (b) has sufficient mass for its self-gravity to overcome rigid body forces so that it assumes a hydrostatic equilibrium (nearly round) shape, and (c) has cleared the neighbourhood around its orbit.
Pluto hasn't cleared it's neighbourhood (specifically, it's failed to absorb Neptune, which crosses its orbit), so it's not a planet under point C. The term "dwarf planet" has been added to cover objects which fall under points A and B above, but not C. ---- "Well in this case, he's being flamed, and rightly so, for whinning about a game mechanic that doesn't actually exist." -Lorth |

Actually they down-graded it because of it's size, they decided it came under the "rubble" classification, not planet. Thus they are now agreed on Dwarf Planet. ----

Why all the comments about mnemonics? WTS: ability to remember 9 (now 8) words in sequence.
I, too, would have preferred to see it stay a planet, as it's what I'm used to, but of course reclassifying it was the right move. ----------

Neptune hasn't gotten rid of pluto either, and it's still considered to be a planet.

Males are blond. Females are blonde.
Since most "blonde jokes" are exclusively about females (sexism 4tw!) that's the more common spelling. ________________________________________________

Good point, better tell the IAU
Also, since the first point says "orbit around the sun", nothing outside our own solar system can be a planet. ---- "Well in this case, he's being flamed, and rightly so, for whinning about a game mechanic that doesn't actually exist." -Lorth |

It appears this vote was only for our own solar system, but in time, the same classification can be applied to others...
Pluto crosses NeptuneÆs orbit, Neptune doesn't cross PlutoÆs...
If they collided, Neptune would indeed have cleared it's orbit...
