Oneiros cardtext:
All other friendly ships in the region get +4 Defense.
As long as there is are one or more friendly ships in this region, prevent all damage dealt to Oneiros.
First part is pretty clear. Everything except Oneiros gets +4 on top of their defense. I assume having two Oneiroses means that they get the +4 defense from eachother. Second part is where it gets dodgy. I think pretty much everyone agrees that the Guardian is pretty insane with it being indestructable in combat. Reading the second part of Oneiros implies that as long as you have one or more friendly ships in the region (note lack of the word "other" in this part) Oneiros can't be killed by damage.
So I fly an Oneiros into a region. I now have one or more friendly ships in that region. All damage to Oneiros is prevented. I now have a guardian except that it's also immune to damage done to it by news. Hello?
I doubt it's intended, but that's what the card says it does. Or is it intended after all and will both Guardian and Oneiros get errata'd really really soon?

Actually it's worse. you can;t even damage it with news, unless it outright removes it from play. Because it says ALL damage and not just damage from ships.
Now play 2 oneiros in one region and have 2 invulnerable ships that can only be removed from play with news that doesn't do this via damage. _________________________________________________________

To sum up what I was going to say:
Put 2 onerios in a region, and then just do whatever you want with said region.

You don't need two, you only need one per region. This is the way to win via Eve Gate or Archaeological Site. -------------------------- Just here for the CCG. :) |

Edited by: Shayla Sh''inlux on 25/08/2006 17:43:32 Yeh I was about to say that you don't need two. If you'd need two it would still be stupid, but at least requires some setup.
As it is, it's pretty insane. Oh well, I'm about to abuse that half an hour from now then.

That's what I said. A guardian that's also immune to damage from news.

I'd hope that the card was supposed to read "As long as there are one or more other friendly ships..." but for whatever reason it doesn't. Look at it from the perspective of the captain of the Oneiros: the term "friendly ships" wouldn't include his or her own ship, would it? Maybe in some contexts, but in general?
Even if they are totally immune to damage, you can kill them by outright destruction: Blood Raiders, Depleted Resources, Exiled From the Empire, Pirate Mercenary, Prophecy of Macaber (a little overkill), and The Cult of Tetrimon. Of course, all of these cards are really pretty expensive.
You can also take them over with Mutiny. Actually, that'd be something of a neat trick: use Mutiny on it while it's still being assembled, let them build it for you...

I'm fairly sure that it's SUPPOSED to be other friendly ships, since if it's intended as it is written now, they could just as well have said "Oneiros is immune to all damage".
I'm playing it like I think it's supposed to be.

If Oneiros is your only ship in a region, it can be damaged.
When you're home alone, do you have any friends there?
I realize that the templating could have been better, but the intent of the card is quite obvious.

This seems like a job for a "Disarmament Treaty". Since the news doesnt specifically target the Oneros, but rather says your opponent has to withdraw at least one ship, then you AAIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE *boom* his other one

The intent is obvious, but it's just as obvious that minor errata is needed to create the intended effect. Friendly is defined in the rulebook as specifically referencing control. "Friendly > All cards controlled by you are considered friendly cards. In some multiplayer variants, your ally's cards are also considered friendly."
Thus the question becomes not "do you have friends" but rather "do you control any ships in the region." While you are piloting your Oneiros in Dam Torsad, do you control any ships in the region? Yes.
We thank you (profusely) for the clarification of intent, and look forward to the errata. -------------------------- Just here for the CCG. :) |
