thought id share this linkage, i first read about this in Scientific American about a year ago and for some *odd* reason it doesnt seem to get much press coverage. I'll let the linkie speak for itself.

Wow. Someone should really take that up large-scale sometime soon. Maybe people could dig-up old refuse sites (or current ones) and transport all the stuff to a large version of this process, and make oil. This would be perfect, tbh. ---------------------------

Too expensive at the moment.
Might get used once oil gets short though

If a non cost effective model is followed then yes theres a much larger ammount available but currently we're set to hit hard times with oil around the middle of this century. Thats not going to be the biggest worry though, its going to cause some of the major petrolchemical companies to collapse in on themselves which is going to reek economic havoc, as the price of oil rises every product/service/industry tied to oil and its processed byproducts (and thats alot of everyday itmes rember what plastic is) is going to become more costly, and of course because almost all of food and essential products in the world are moved about the world via trucks, large cargo boats which will become more expensive to run, which inturn means the cost of even the basics will go up. All in all runaway inflation, it will probably put it up there with those type of events that are classed as species adapts or dies senarios.

That sounds very unlikely to me. Beyond the obvious scale and proceses involved, there is one major point raised.
That technology is not a week old. That story comes from 2003. If it was a viable and cheap way of making oil, it would be being used very widely by now. The very fact that it is not speaks volumes for it's comparative ease and price compared to fossil oil.
Business goes where the profit is highest, and if this is cheaper than fossil oil, it will have been used extensively by now.

So far looks interesting, but we shall see. Not exactly sure how efficient it will be though.

Scientific American has had a number of followup articles. I suggest you read them before making ignorant comments.
The reason that it isn't happening as widespread as it could be is simply that before anything happens, there needs to be a full-size prototype factory.
Nobody can do anything until a working prototype of the proper size is made, and then it will take off.

I have no other experience of this technology, and all my "ignorant comments" are based off the application of what I know of how science and technology develops. If a technology works better (cost-effectively) than competitors already in use, it will be made use of, and a prototype will be made as soon as possible.
If no-one has tried or considered it worth developing three years after it's inception, it probably isn't that great.
As I said, this has nothing to do with the technology involved or it's premise. I know pretty much nothing about that. This is just my judgement based on the surrounding circumstances.
