well got blown up in low sec again today by a supposed pirate corp. I'm not whining about losing fights you see but there is little in the way of style or honor with the ones i have encountered. In 4 incounters in low sec that i was the loser, not once was i ransomed, pod or otherwise. Just killed because. They claim they dont ransom anymore because people dont pay etc... Now i only go ratting in low sec with freebee ships from missions and tech 1 gear, so i know my loot drops are a joke.. and it was my understanding that to pirate and make any money at it you need to ransom people. is this still true? should i count my low sec ships as lost to pirates with no ransoms anymore? or are the ones i have encountered just low sec losers who will be out of pirating soon cuz they dont know what they are doing? Questions, comments, flames... whatever... but someone tell me exactly what a pirate is in EVE anymore...

I certainly hope there are some pirates left and I fully intend, once I've got more experience under my belt, to uphold some degree of honor as one. For now, forgive the griefers and gankers. They know not what they do.

Its true, ransomers dont pay, its 99% of the time more profitable to kill there ship and loot, People use their pod to stall time for reinforcements etc... Its bs.
It never happened in the old days due to people fitting all t1 stuff and your ship was more expensive then your mods, nowadays most poeple pimp their ships. ---------------------------

People don't pay ransoms? lol
Perhaps if the majority of "pirates" were to approach them with a better attitude than the usual "OMFG i R teh 1337 PVPer... ph34r my T2 Stuffz 'nd die" then they may find the people they manage to catch a bit more willing to negotiate rather than just telling then to get stuffed.
To answer the OP's original question, it depends entirely on you defenition of a "pirate" in game.
If you mean someone who station or gate camps all day in lowsec while hiding behind an alliance ticker, a rack of ECM and stabs, a blob of 30 people or sniping alligned to a SS from 170km for protection, then there are a lot of pirates in Eve.
If you're talking about a corp who roam lowsec an 0.0 either solo, as pairs or in a small gang looking for people to ransom then no, there aren't a lot of "pirates" around in game.
You can find out a lot more about piracy by speaking to the people who do it.
If you're looking to speak to a proper solo 0.0 pirate then speak to Famine Aligher'ri, although he seems to hate me (for some bizzare reason I never managed to figure out ), until he joined Burn Eden he was one of the few and best people in Eve who operated solo like that in 0.0 when he founded ViLe.
If you're looking to speak to a member of a pirate corp in both lowsec Empire and 0.0 I suggest either speaking to TunDraGon, Snigg erdly or a member of my corp. I'm sure most of the people mentioned will be more than happy to help.
At the end of the day it lies to the sole discression of the agressor to actually decide whether or not to ransom, it looks like you were cought by someone who just wanted the kill.

thanks for your answers guys.. i guess my point was that in the few encounters with corps that have names like the blood corsairs and that have neg 10 sec status, i have never even be offered a ransom for anything, so i will conclude that either im putting up a close enough fight that they want to kill me, or pirates have found another way to make money in eve other then ransoming, because from my understanding, ransoming was the chief way to make money being a pirate.

Read their corp-desc. - it says they never ransom, so you might have your answer there.

I don't hate anyone, just don't like having blue. Kind of figures I would end up in BE because they have no blue either . I'm far from the best at anything, I just have pride in what I do and practice. It's good to live by a rule you set than living by someone elses rules to purly survive.

i think you answered yourself in the topic, you fly a cheap ship with tech1 gear. I only ransom if i think their is something worth ransoming. Ie battlecruiser, BS, tech2 ship. otherwise i blow them up if you've been playing for longer then 6 months i will try to lock you pod and ransom it
otherwise tech1 cruiser, frigs im just gonna blow and see what i get what i can.
you also need to understand the ransoming takes time and time is risky since you may bring in some friends. If you don't look like your worth much, blowing you up is simpler and safer

i have tried to pirate in the past. my experience is as follows-
1.Ransoming in belts
- some people pay (1/4) - some people have stabs and fly off (2/4) - some people log off (1/4)
- out of the above 1/4 give you abuse.
2. Ransoming mission runners in low sec
- some pay ransoms (2/4) - some people log (1/4) - some people fight (1/4)
The main problem in both of the above is that it takes ages to track down a target in either of the above. for mission runners i can generally find 2 targets / night and make 30 mill or so from ransom or equipment. not really worth it tbh. gets frustrating, can understand why people just blow people up.

Well, as the rest have said. Pirating has went weird. There are still a few who do it the old way. But like myself, I always prefer to ransom so I don't lower my sec status too much.
My last ransom was a thorax pilot which I opened a convo asked for 4mil (only) and they said they spent it all on their ship so I fired one last load of missiles and POP! took the loot, Turns out he had about 10mil+ in loot. So I guess it was more profitable for me to kill him and steal the loot. I generally give someone about 10-15seconds to pay a ransom after I ask for it or I make them go bang. I mean after all.. It doesn't take long to right click on someone and say give money. then type in the amount and push ok.
If someone is taken too long then they are clearly not gonna pay or they are screaming for help in corp chat. in which case they go pop I steal loot and go to an ss and wait the counter out. As for you flying t1 ships with t1 loot. Unless your in a t1 cruiser.. then your not even worth killing or a ransom.

Ransoming in 0.0 is very much alive. Low sec is harder because you either end up tanking sentries or a brigade of people will show up to save their friend.
I made 60mil so far today just ransoming a couple of battleships in 0.0. One of them could even have killed me if he just stalled payment for 20 seconds :o -----

I once attempted piracy with another character.
We roamed low sec space in empire, and when we found a target our 2 AB Incursus and my Jammin Celestis would lock them down and ask for ransom, usually pretty low, 500k, 1mil ISK depending on cruiser type.
Out of 10 captures, with no name calling or anything on my part, and being completely civil, I got 0 ransom paid. Most of these ships were tech2 fitted, I made more on their loot afterwards.
Its people like that that should be blaimed for the lack of "real" piracy. Its easier, safer and more profitable to camp a gate or station.

One of the biggest problems with oldskool piracy is people fitting 3-8 WCS (they should stack yes?) ... for example, a couple of you trundle across an indy or whatever, you have a good chance of turning him into the periodic table if you shoot first all out and then pick over his cargo....
It's been a long time since we've been able to ransom with any degree of success without large numbers locking and scramming which kinda defeats the object of small co-ordinated gangs looking for targets.
For example: If i'm picking up a new Raven from dodgy space, i'll fit it with stabs across the board, because I know that unless I hit a HUGE camp or bubbles then i'm good to go with BM's.. I don't roam with Stabs, just on delivering my own new ship.
I've drank too much French **** and now i've forgotten what i'm trying to say....
Night.. and lub you all, especially SNIGG cos you give the reach around.

Had a Ferox bigmouthing me and a corpie (we're in 2 punishers) because he got away with 4 points on him... Oh well. After that he kept trying to convo me to ask if it was safe for him to rat, I replied something like "This is low sec, guess". Another Ferox nicely paid up so it's all good.

I ransom people or asplode them for money and because I feel like it at the time. I keep my word. I start ransom conversations with "Avast!". That's pretty piratey if you ask me.
All this "ransoms or obligatory to be a real pirate" or "victims have rights too" or whatever is just optional.
If you exist, you asplode or pay not to. I don't care who you are or how old you are (exception is pods <2weeks, I only asplode them if they are rude. Trials can't pay ransoms). You might drop something or pay for the right not to die, so you will.
If I choose to ransom, I do. If I don't, I don't. That is my prerogative as the guy with the big guns. If you don't like it, don't lose the fight. I'm just as much as a pirate for blowing you up as ransoming you.

Well, we just like blowing anything up tbh.
Only thing I ransom is pods and occasionaly get paid to let people through 0.0 to empire gates.
We don't pirate in low sec to much as I like to keep a certain sec status level. When in 0.0 though, you have no choice but to kill anything you see. Its pretty much guarenteed any targets will have friends a jump or two out.
Kill, scoop loot, then leave system. Gets me enough isk anyway :)

haulers .. is the way to make money out of pirating .. theres i s apirate code.. one two or three ships max .. these days being gate ganked uis rarer in 0.4 to 0.1 secs .. ! still goes on .. but most pirates that openned corps were uinundated with newbs .. and they are tied up nowadays in a more admin role .. !
true ^ ... gate gankers in 0.0 have nevr been pirates.. 0.0 is where pirates reside maybe .. 0.4 to 0.1 is pirate hang out not 0.0 .. !
the pirate code is such that pretty much every ship in the game nowadays in 0.0 breaks the pirate code and they arnet pirates ...!
one two or three flashing red lights .. then you know they are pirates.. any over that .. well they are trainning probs and will be at a gate .. !
very few people mine really in 0.4 these days so theres less pirating as a result .. the best method still to become a pirate which is a hapless and shoot and go lucky type of life anyway .. is the haulers ..!
ganking is fun but most people are so very timid in what they ahve their holds these days or insta warp mainly - that your pull from haulers is likely to be small .. or unvaluable but the big hauls certainly exist .. buy a pos .. sell it for eg in 0.4... mark the buyers nbame and corp and nail him after hes picked the goodies ....at the gate .. he he he then you get your money and usually the product is in the can anyway ..! its a 50/50 type of pirating but if you get lucky you take your thing to safe sapce and sell it or do it again and agian ..!
people will come to 0.4 for a bargain ... you just need to offer them a bargain and of course if they loyal buyers .. then you let them buy the stuff..!

I tried to ransom a mackinaw once. Ship's worth 120 mill, right? I offered a 50 mill ransom. No response. Just closed the chat.
So, ok, I'll just blow it up. Woopty do, 5 mill in strip miners. And he's down 120 mill.
I don't get it?
So then I try to ransom a battlecruiser.. I figure 8 mill is pretty reasonable! and he warps out.
Also, cruisers blow up too fast to ransom. I click recall drones and they burst in a pillar of flame.
Now, I figure, if you want a ransom? say something in local.. convo me as soon as you notice that you're dying.. take a little action! Back when I got caught sleeping a couple times.. thats what _I_ did. and I saved a ton of cash and the pirate was friendly!
So to sum up.. you want a ransom, then judge your pirate and offer one.

Sorry, but your misunderstanding of the term 'Pirate' concerns me. Please do not confuse Pirates with Highwaymen, or Wise Guys. Pirates plunder, pillage and as history observes, very rarely left any survivors. They did not pull up alongside a ship and ask the captin for a ransom. They boarded, killed everyone and took the ship and all its cargo.
The most accurate comparison would be belt piracy, but gate piracy is not far off. If you do not want to be a victim of Piracy in low sec, then observe the best practises of space travel...
1. Buy Instas - They are expensive, but then so is your ship and pod. 2. Fit accordingly - Nanofibre Structures decrease your warping time, WCS do not. (Gate Pirates rarely scramble, they lock fast and gank, if you are in warp b4 they lock, you win) 3. Check the map - Look for podkills on your planned route, and pilots in system.

QFT, and veto 4tw
real pirates, as in corps that aren't a bunch of 4 month old noobs acting hard, ransom often. they realize that it's usually better money to get someone to cough up 3 or 4 mil for their shiny new thorax than it is to blow it up and hope they had tech 2.
personally i fancy myself a pirate... i ransom as much as i can, but sometimes there are extenuating circumstances (negative standing set toward your corp - automatic pod on sight, friends/other neutrals in local, any number of things) that make me not want to ransom you so much. also people who log off... uggghhh... if you log off the second i scramble you, you can kiss your ship goodbye, and since i pirate in an AF, you can pretty much expect to log back in to a station.
gate camps are fun, but there's no real chance to ransom, unless i'm in a nice beefy bs with a bunch of my friends. and yes, we do scramble when we gank at gates. we scramble hard. :D

Its already been stated in this thread that pirates rape, kill, pillage and plunder.
Real pirates take your belongngs by force and most pirates enjoy killing. I pirated in low sec for 2 whole years, some of my corp members wanted to ransom but I found that to be a pain in the a** since I would rather want to kill than to let them get away.
Nothing I liked more than victims who had the 'you can get my mods when you pry it from my cold, dead hands' attitude.....that used to make my day. Not that it would matter though, since I'd kill them anyways.
