I admit I don't have much combat skills (gunnery lvl 3, small hybrid lvl 3, medium hybrid lvl 1, as well as some of the side skills lvl 1-2), but I recently upgraded to medium hybrid turrets for my Brutix, and I still don't seem to do any damage to NPC vessels.
I have 4 medium scout drones and they do the job taking out the ships while I sit back and fire a shot or two that seems do nick their paint only. Normally that isn't much of a problem, but now I'm doing the Human Cattle part 3 mission and it's just impossible as I don't do any damage to the NPC vessels and I can't withstand all their missiles long enough to deploy my drones properly.
Current equipped guns:
2x 250mm Compressed Coil Gun Dual 150mm Carbide Railgun I Dual 150mm Railgun I Anode Neutron Particle Cannon Modal Neutron Particle Cannon
The opponents are: Caldari Navy Scout Caldari Navy Griffin Caldary Navy Officer
I figured the 2 coil guns would do damage at 20-30km away, they do hit, but they only seem to do 5% damage to their shield bar at best. The two railguns are even worse and only take off one pixel. The two blaster cannons do not seem to hit anything because the larger NPCs stay at 8km range, and the ones that come to 1-2km seem to be too fast and I can't hit them.
All the while, they keep shooting missiles at me which force me to warp out very fast.
Help, what am I doing wrong?

Caldari officer cost me an Exequror last night. You need good defence against missiles - I've got 800 mm armor plate, energized reactive hareners and a small repper and I still needed to warp out regularly. Problem with these guys is that they gang up on you. Try to pull a couple while flying back towards the station. That way you can whittle them down over time and warp out quick if needed. And indeed your drones will do most of the damage - use lights and be prepared to abandon them if you are taking too many hits.
Or bring a friend!

The problem with drones in this mission is they immediately spread in all directions when launched, and attack seperate ships, instead of focussing on one.
Now the caldari are allover my entrypoint and I immediately get blasted to bits if I try to enter the zone. Pulling them away might be a good idea, but I can hardly last 30 seconds in there right now.

Your using lasers and rails? That's your problem right there. Fit a plate, some long range weapons and let the drones do the work.
The other thing I would suggest is a short range setup and mwd or ab directly to them, web them down, unleash drones. Have some nos if your running light on cap. -=====-

Edited by: The RepoMan on 27/08/2006 11:22:13 ... my god man mixed guns is bad enough, but mixed gun types!? If you spread yourself too thin you're totally boned.
Choose a weapon type and equip it, and make sure your guns are the same!! especially if you go rails!!!
And for the love of god, read the tracking guide in the player guide, you can find it on the bar on the left hand side of this page. Read it, understand it, then copy your weapon info into the last page, and use the stats of the guys you're fighting in the test data and figure out a plan of attack.
if you decide to go rails remember optimal is life, if you dont have sharpshooter get it up asap
if you go blasters your biggest challenge will just be getting and staying in range.
If you cant handle micromanaging very well whip on a webber, that should solve everything, albeit you probably dont need it.
And obviously equip the correct ammo =P... and bring lots of it.
Edit: oh my and reading your above post, learn to use drones too lol, they're a huge asset to any ship with a dronebay.

The problem you have is tracking. Every gun has a max speed it can turn around, and that speed is slower for long range weapons. This means that you will miss fast ships that orbit close.
Fit an X5 web and web everything that gets within 10km and you will start to hit.

try out Sticky's guide to turret tracking mate it helps alot to understand how guns works
and yes perhaps you should go for the domi with drones just soooooooo easy that way with drones

I understand perfectly how tracking works, but it's all theory, and I don't seem to find anything useful for real.
I'm using mixed guns because I haven't decided yet which type I want to use, and fitted 2 of each catagory so I can test them. But none of them seem to work. Long range hits almost all the time but doesn't do any damage (even excellent hits do nothing). Medium range hits but does even less damage. Short range either is out of range or misses because tracking is too low.
Do guns just suck and are missiles the way to go? NPCs using guns don't damage me that much either, but NPC missiles rip straight through my shield and hull.

if you want to test out different types of guns, fit a full rack of one type, then refit with a differnt type, don't mix and match because you're damage will suck enormously. And for goodness sake, make sure they are hybrid guns on a brutix, either railguns (220mm or 250mm, not dual 150mms.... they suck) and an afterburner to keep at range, or blasters (electrons for a heavy tank, ions for a light-ish one) and ab and a webber for close range |

Okay, going to refit and get rid of those 150mm's first.

Use antimatter+medium rails+web, then make sure you have Battlecruisers to level 3 and drones 5+drone interfacing.

Youre trying to hit small frigates with 2 medium rails 2 small rails and 2 blasters. Thers your problem. Level 2 missions havo mostly frigates and an occasional cruiser. For that, people use small railguns, due to the fact that they still can hit on 30km range, and do enough damage to kill off allmost any opponent, as long as you have 4 or more of them fitted. Use that. Your next problem is that you are far too slow in your Brutix for lvl2 missions. Level 2 missions are for cruisers, where you have some agility and speed, not for sluggish battlecruisers. Save it for lvl3 missions. What i used for lvl2 missions, was a Thorax, fitted with:
4x Small 150mm Railguns 1x Medium Nosferatu
1x 10mn Afterburner 1x Stasis Webifier 1x Cap Recharger
1x Medium Armor Repairer (aim for a Tech 2 one, it really helps) 3x Energized Armor Hardeners (Type depends on the type of enemy yu are fighting, but you can use kinetic, thermal and explosive and not worry much about changing if you are lazy) 1x 1600mm Armor Plate
With this setup, lvl2 missions were a cakewalk for me.

Nope, but they have drones which is almost as good...maybe better, since you dont use ammo.
Dominix is very popular for missions.
