Podded, not podded, makes no difference once the ship is lost.
It's just a minor irritant if you're the podee, if you're the podder you can get your jollies off. Some folks will collect anything, plus the corpses add a certain "atmosphere" to the living quarters.

Tell that to the guy with a 16million isk clone and hundreds of million worth of implants in his head.
Doesn't this fall under the "Don't fly what you can't afford to lose" concept? I fail to see why implants should be treated any differently. If you follow that rule it is "just a minor irritant". The initial ? was posed to ask "why". They do it for the corpse, simple as that. [ I know no one in EVE would do it simply to be mean spirited ] Since as of this moment you don't get to strip the implants, there is no financial incentive to pod. I suppose one could ransom the pod though... Once you can strip the corpse everyone will pod as common practice.
Once you lose the ship you're pretty much at the perps mercy. Makes no difference. Ship loss, ransom, podding, it's all just game play. Might be different if you were blocked from the game for 48 hours after you got podded 9ie - you died) As it is now there are no worries as long as your clone is up to date. Might even be helpful if you're far from home. I've asked to be podded. I refuse to cave in to EVE paranoia.
As for the hundreds of millions in implants, I'd say don't fly what you can't afford to lose. I don't have hundreds of millions of implants, just a few million. Most of the folks I know who HAVE that amount in implants have billions of ISK. In 0.0, 100 million is what, a couple hours work? By the time you can spend that on implants you're hip deep in ships anyway.
