I'm a slimy Roleplayer and I approve this thread! So icky!
Plus, I can't really believe I missed that whole new star thing. CCP sure knows how to rile people up. With so many dots in the sky representing systems we can warp to, one can't imagine how a single new star makes much of a difference. |

(here's a reddit post with information) The star is visible from any system in New Eden, it seems- and from all looks, it seems to be in W477-P, in the UUA-F4 region (the third cut-off region, not belonging to the Jovians). The system, strangely enough, has had three jumps through it within the last day-and-a-half... EDIT: It's ALSO visible in the Rhea feature page!
Yeah...looking at the imgur post and cross referenced the view angles with visible nebulas you could be right.

Why is it yellow? The color of a star carries certain implications about size/mass and age. Yellow is odd.

This shot was taken last night from LS-JEP, which is 'due south' of Jove space:

as you can see, the 'star' lines up directly with the Jove nebula. This leads me to believe that it is in Jove space and not UUA-F4, which is 'CCP' space.

*edit* maybe this star will provide a jumping point into Jove space... a sort of bridge? |

I for one would find a Sol system akin to thera very interesting. Update it according to new discoveres by NASA, hyper-realistic planet and moon models faithful to real life...etc.

There's a new NPC quote on the EveNow page:
Quote:IGÇÖm frankly baffled. The information weGÇÖve been able to gather from this anomaly is in some respects suggestive of a core collapse supernova but there is simply no way in which the light would be visible in every system of the cluster. It is there. It is manifesting faster than light. It should not be possible.

http://community.eveonline.com/news/news-channels/world-news/stellar-anomaly-detected-by-capsuleers/
Quote:NEW EDEN - Scientists have confessed to being at a loss to explain an apparently superluminal cosmic phenomenon, following the detection of a new and growing stellar anomaly by capsuleer stargazers shortly after 18:00 EVE Standard Time yesterday.
Prompted by the observations of noted capsuleer space photographer Caroline Grace, several capsuleers last night detected an apparent "new star" in the local star field and immediately began efforts to triangulate its location. It was quickly realized that the stellar anomaly was visible in multiple star systems across the New Eden cluster, regardless of the large distances in light years between them. As capsuleer reports mounted it became apparent that the phenomenon was visible in all local cluster systems and varied in its prominence according to distance from the far interstellar north-east.
As non-capsuleer scientists scrambled to catch up, the collective observations of many pilots across New Eden soon enabled independent stellar cartographers in the capsuleer community to locate the anomaly in the isolated UUA-F4 region, and later to pinpoint it in the close vicinity of the W477-P system. This system has been cautiously and provisionally confirmed as the most likely location of the anomaly by astronomers at Caille University, Republic University and the School of Applied Knowledge. The Faculty of Cosmology at Hedion University has so far declined to comment on the anomaly.
Asked to explain the superluminal effects of the phenomenon, Wolls Obraio, Professor of Astrophysics at Caille University said, "I'm frankly baffled. The information we've been able to gather from this anomaly is in some respects suggestive of a core collapse supernova but there is simply no way in which the light would be visible in every system of the cluster. It is there. It is manifesting faster than light. It should not be possible."
Doctor Niils Cassira of the School of Applied Knowledge was more willing to speculate, "We know space-time in the local area of this cluster is atypical. At least since the Seyllin Incident and the emergence of unstable wormholes it has been clear that a fundamental alteration of the local fabric has taken place. In my view, and this is speculative, it is entirely possible that the local area exists in a bubble of space-time in which certain non-standard possibilities may manifest. If that is true, well all bets are off for what may happen next." Awesome!

Soon, the bamboo dreadnoughts of the Pandaverse will begin their transit to our realm. May whatever god you believe in have mercy on your souls....
That being said, I'm glad my name was left off the reports. I credit the professionalism and experience of our Media Spin Unit in making this seem more like a natural phenomenon, and less like a huge Ted related station explody thingy disaster that may or may not have wiped out a solar system and accidentally'd all of space time in Tuxfordesque fashion.
Since the cessation of their usefulness is imminent, may I appropriate your belongings?

For those who might want to read up on the last appearance of a similar star, here's the news articles on it from 2007/2008:
https://wiki.eveonline.com/en/wiki/The_Bright_Star
http://eve.battleclinic.com/news/16636-A-Strange-Bright-Star.html http://eve.battleclinic.com/news/16720-The-Bright-Star-Conjecture-Mounts.html http://community.eveonline.com/news/news-channels/eve-online-news/achuran-traditions-prospering-in-the-corporate-world/ http://community.eveonline.com/news/news-channels/eve-online-news/vherokior-spiritual-leader-mounts-expedition/ http://community.eveonline.com/news/news-channels/eve-online-news/bright-star-vanishes-scientists-mystified/
Notably, the first one appeared before the Seyllin Incident, so the idea put forth by the doctor in today's news report that the Seyllin explosion is what is causing this one is unlikely. :) |

For folks interested in the 'Bright Star' phenomenon, I ran an article on it, with an added bit about the first bright star a few years back:
Strange bright star appears in the sky across New Eden!
All in all, exciting times ahead, and yes, big chance this bright star is linked to the upcoming shattered wormhole systems & Thera!
Strange bright star appears in the sky across New Eden!

I'm also coming to the same conclusions. I flew a Taranis up into Vale to see how close I could get to this new star in the sky. I took some screen shots. I can't say for certain it's UUA, it seems closer to where J7HZ-4 should be. So hard to tell though. I tried making waypoints and destinations up and around through Cobalt Edge, and looking in space to see the route, but nothing is really adding up to say for certain.
Pictures from the Edge
This is certainly going to make for some interesting times.
