Been flying rails since I've been in the game and felt like blasters were worth an experiment. I fit out a cat with five neutron blasters to see how it would work, using tungsten ammo to give them just a wee bit more range. They don't seem to do much more damage than when I had the cat equipped with nice rails and you also end up so close to the target that you're taking extra damage from their blasters.
so, am I missing anything?

Cat is not a blaster boat.Acctualy its a destroyer so it sucks naturaly(PS:get a frig).
Blasters are the best close range weapon in-game.

also use antimater ammo or void ammo don't worry about range you get in really close, use blasters on a thorax and brutix they are great

Catalyst is not a blaster boat, neutrons are inferior to ions on pretty much every ship, and fitting 5 turrets to a catalyst is a war crime.

Blasters when fitted correctly and on the proper ships are almost always the highest dps ships of their class. They also track better than most of their counterparts. Although the range is the big sacrifice. They are also easier to fit than rails.

You're kidding! The falloff bonus sucks at railguns, so fitting it with blasters is intended by the devs, if you ask me. Though i don't like them on a cat, my quickfit testing says that it rocks enough to be worth to be fitted. If you wanna go for range -> Cormorant is the far better choice. _____________________________ - be excellent to each other -

Yeah, but it's dog slow.
The trick with blaster boats is they need to be able to get into blaster range relatively quickly. The canonical blaster boats are probably the Thorax and the Megathron - the rax because it gets that cap bonus, allowing it to run under MWD for longer, and the Megathron because it's tough enough to survive a short run in to blaster range. The Cat is slow and fragile, which just isn't a good combination for blasters.

Cat is a blaster boat, problem is it's the worst one in game. It's slow, which makes it difficult to use in this manner, and it can't take fire either. The combination of these 2 factors make for a deadly combination to any cat user.

Hmm. I shall have to try out the Thorax with that setup. I have the skills to fly it now, was just enoying the majesty of the Vexor for the moment. Four 200mm rails, BOOYA! And EMP drones to help take the shields down. :) So, what size blasters are good for the Vex, and how many? I've noticed that the Serpy rats have some very scary ships equipped with blasters, do a number on my shields. However, I'm not quite sure how they have it setup and how they get the range they do. The Brutixes I can handle, their range seems to crap out at 10km, but the Serp Vexors seem to be able to reach out and touch someone past 20km. Yeouch! Is that a module or something they're using to get that range?

if you want a rail dessie train cal frig 3 and use a cormorant, it has 10%/lvl to optimal instead of falloff.

Edited by: Verus Potestas on 03/09/2006 18:22:21 And if you want a blaster dessie, you're screwed.
Both hybrid dessies work best with rails. One, the cormorant, has increased range. It is considerably better for sniping. It can fit less rails, and less damage mods, but for better range (more tracking computers/sensor boosters). The other, the catalyst, has better damage and tracking (8 turrets, tracking bonus, more damage mods), but cannot snipe nearly as effectively.
Both are pathetic blaster ships, and to be quite honest, neither are too hot as rail ships.

It has a 50% optimal bonus as well. It is just closer range than the corm.
It sucks in general, but sucks less with rails than blasters.

I am a great fan of blasters. The great joy in using them is two fold: 1) Blasters opperate at a range most weapons can't hit at. 2) The DPS of blasters is amazing when setup right.
Also, when you fly a blaster boat, there's a great increase in the intensity of battles. I love getting up close and personal and just tearing people up. It's purely adrenaline.
The downsides to blasters are cap issues, especially when being nossed and you have to be quick... Very quick. Range often can determine the outcome of a battle.
That being said, definitely go with blasters when you can. ___________

I guess that's why they are barely flown - to expensive for the high risk due to lack of any defense...or in other words: only for the brave _____________________________ - be excellent to each other -
