Maybe maybe not this idea has floated through before...
It seems kind of silly that we mine in warships, battleships in particular. I imagine the USS Kittlyhawk out in the north sea drilling for oil. Kind of weird me thinks...
I know it probably wasn't an intention to have people in battleships mining but it seems to be going that way. So how does a class of mining ships with say, 3, 6, and 8 turrets, drone space, and no weapon capabilities sound?
They could be cheaper, balancing out mining opportunities for poorer new players, they could be made smaller, enabling easier navigation in belts with less hang up, and it would add another dimension to the game with new skills to accompany the ships.
Just a thought.

I would suggest not making it impossible for Battleships to equip miners, but possibly giving a negative bonus to mining in one. Likewise the miners should be able to equip guns, but have heavy negative bonuses to rof and damage...
Certain ships should be better for certain tasks based on more than the number of High/Medium/Low and PG they have.

simple realy...
add a mineing turret tag to turrets..
basicly make it so combat vessels can only equip half their turrets with mineing lasers
add frig/cruser/bb versions of the mineing ships..
Frig cost 100k to build, large cargo, 3 light turrets, very high cpu, low powergrid 3/3/3 slots
Cruser cost, thorax eq. large cargo, 5 turrets, high cpu, low power grid, LIGHT turrets, 5/4/4 hardpoints.
BB cost, middle teir 2 bb eq, huge cargo, 8 turrets, massive CPU, middleing powergrid, 8/6/6 slots.
All ships should have decent shields and armor about equivilent to the weakest in each of the respective class <tier 3 frigs, crusers and teir 2 bbs>
these would be relitively balanced...

this is a great idea. and it needs to be taken care of.
make a miner Hslot. problem solved and allow indys to carry more of those.
and allow none on any warship or very few like 1 on a frig 2 on crusier 3 on battleship.... but i prefer the none at all.

for allowing weapons on mining ships just make it so mining laser slots can mount small weapons only or something.... give BBs curernt high slots, plus 2-3 lasers lots.
really tho, this topic is pretty well developed on other threads...
been there done that got the shirt

Great ideas... And they don't require new ship classes. Although that would be cool too.
