get rid of all asteroid types
and just put in one type of asteroid. with differents composition percentages, dependant upon sec status of system. i'd also like to see the inclusion of rare gems and minerals now and then, that can possibly be used to enhance different items.
for example in 1.0 90%veld 10%scord. 0.7 60%veld 25%scord, 5%other....
and so on.
the use of minning crystals would be used to extract more of a certain type of ore, which would otherwise be mined in equal volumes.
this would guarantee a almost equal chance for people to mine, because as it is currently people mining straight after dt have all the advantages. if every asteroid in the system had the same amount in it(unless minning crystal is used), then there would be lots left for everyone else.

That actually sounds like a sensible suggestion.
Then again, I don't mine so my opinion is pretty much worthless :)

Not bad, but I'd rather have the roid composition be slightly variable, so some might be richer in certain ore types than others.
Then, have them all be huge, so it's none of these little pebbles that pop after one cycle of your strip miners, and have the survey scanner become a targeted module that analyzes individual asteroids for their quantity and composition.

Edited by: Jallen on 05/09/2006 05:11:37 Can't really think of a downside other than it'd cause mineral prices to sky rocket as the only control over what type of minerals they get is based on crystals, and then your only benefiting the dedicated miner do to the skill requirements on said crystals.
Edit:
Make that certain minerals will sky rocket, others will most likely plumet.

theres no real gain with the mining crystals other than to increase yield of a certain ore by a percentage determined by skill alone. all the asteroids contain the same ores, so to mine any one ore you would still need to mine the other ores.
remeber the initial idea is to increase the life span of the nicer ores to other than a few hours past respawn time, as it currently is. the choice ores would be in every asteroid in the belt not just a few. so striping out one ore would actually require the whole belt to be mined, thats not as easily done as it is now.
think of it like this, do the rats you shoot in a melee situation have scanable holds that tell you what loot is going to dropped. and more importantly do you know exactly what the rat is going to drop when you kill it, i don't think so. but with the way mining is at the moment, you can scan the field and strip out the best ores, because you know exactly what you are going to get.
I feel this would be a more realistic approch, and one that is fairer to all the players no matter what time zone they play from.
Edit: P.S. if there is no occurrance of the ore within the belt that you are in then the a mining crystal not of one of those types would make no difference.
As to regie's suggestion of small variations within the belt, that is also an acceptable approch, and the suggestion of the enhance asteroid scanner is also a great idea.

You already have this, it's just that the asteroids with different composition percentages have names.
EG Veldspar Composition % = 100% Trit
Just call all of the current asteroids 'Asteroid' and give them the same appearance. Then once that has been done all us miners will shout that we don't know what where mining until we mine it and complain bitterly.
At least roid scanners would be useful though.

I'll apologize for this being kind of blunt...
But if your having trouble finding the "good" ore... go to a different system! Of course the belts that have stations in them are gonna be cleaned out a couple hours after respawn.
I have no trouble finding good ore even on days just prior to the next respawn.
Edit: Blah, my text got put between quotes. :(

I think it would be nice to have system wide belts (as in when fully zoomed out, it's asteroids as far as the eye can see).
Then you could have this idea and it'd work quite well. The trick would be to have a new type of aseroid type or composition type:
call it "Spoonium" for argument's sake Spoonium yeilds exactly nothing minerals wise and can't be refined, and most asteroids in the massive belts would be Spoonium roids
--
On a separate point, it'd be nice to have real geology in mining in the names at least. Let's have "Iron Pyrite" instead of Scordite.
And i want some back story on the composition of Tritanium and Pyerite crystals. All moon minerals are RL elements. What is the molecular structure, how is trit and zyd formed?

I agree this would be very nice. System wide belts would be a great implementation. Spoonium would make roid scanners a useful module!
Making the asteroid a 'conglomerate' type would be great. If you need Mexallon for a ship you're building you scan for the roids with the most Plagio. Regular strip miners would take a percentage of each type of ore. So one pull from an asteroid would yield mostly veldspar, then the other ores according to that asteroid's composition. Take a plagioclase crystal with you and you'll be extracting more plagio and so forth. I like it.
I approve of this message. |

I think this would remove some of the PVP element of mining. Part of holding and defending a space is keeping others away from the best roids.

I've always wondered why asteroids just didn't have variable composition.
I suppose however, that they do have variable composition of minerals which they hold.
Scordite is the name of an asteroid with xxx mineral composition.
Just like how you'll find granite stone, vs shale stone. Both stones will have differences in mineral composition.
do roids spawn only during downtime? I've come back to systems later in the day, and I could have sworn there was more jaspet there than when I left it.

true but for some reason(in RL) when things blow up they tend to mix all the individual bits togeter. i thought an asteroid was just a chunk of something much larger so id kind of expect to find ore conglomerates. where you have a mixture of veld, scord and so on in it.

thats how i thought it was supposed to be(only during DT), but i've witnessed asteroids respawning after a dt but only rarely.

Just to let you all know i suggested system wide belts a year ago and last i seen it was on the drawing board (not saying i was the one that got it there mabe it someone pasted the same0
But anyway there thinking about it.
As for the idea of sticking the roids together its a good idea it would put a but more involvment into mining.
