I know you guys get your isk from killing others and looting their ship. Or sometimes you guys randsom them off to get your isk. I'm just wondering if pirating can really get you enough isk to fund a potentionaly expensive lifestyle.
I have always been a miner and its pretty good isk. But every once in a while I got picked off by a pirate. I'm thinking about trying out the dark side but I wana make sure that I don't dig myslef into a hole of debt and negitive security status.
Is pirating a good way to make isk while still having ALOT of fun?

It's a lot of fun.
Money though? The only surefire way I know to make money while pirating is either to get a very organized pirating operation going, or gatecamp. Gatecamping sucks. :P
Solo pirating isn't usually great for profit unless you're exceptional and lucky... 9/10 times the people won't pay a ransom, and 19/20 times the stuff that drops is crap. Also, if they have any T2 or faction/named items, they get blown up 99/100 times. :)
You have to enjoy it to do it. Money can be made a variety of ways... If you know how to pick your fights you can make a comfortable living. If you look at it as 'profit' instead of 'honor', you can do well. :P
Either way, mining is better cash, easier, and insanely boring comparitively.. :)

Pretty much. You can live off it, just, but it's not always easy. I understand pirates fitting WCS: one death can cost the profits of 20-30 kills.
Yet for some reason, anti-pirates seem to think it's strange for pirates to avoid unwinnable fights

I make quite a bit of money pirating, the issue isn't really if people pay or not, usually if you're curtious they pay.
Opening and demanding isk will only get you a kill-mail, a firm request of isk with a time limit gets your wallet blinking. ___________________________

Gatecamping in 0,0 is boring. Gatecamping in 0,4 - 0,1 rocks! At the gates u will find the best targets with nice loot. Tanking sentries is just cool U only need 2 BSs at a gate in low sec. Make some rules ( only kill BC or bigger ) and make insta dock, ss etc. Pirating in belts gives no profit cos u will either find miners, NPC-hunters ( who use wcs mostly ) or other pirates. But if camp gates in low sec, ure sec stat will drop VERY fast
Sniping however IS boring

Yep. A lot of the time I'll come across an NPC'er in a system.. who's fitted w/ a ton of stabs. Okay, I don't have a good chance of killing him.
However, strike up some conversation, pester him a little, and then inform him that you'll leave him be, free to run the system for a 24 hour period for a price... they're in it for profit as much as we are. If they can't kill any rats w/o me interfering and making them warp off, well... they're not making any money ratting. They'll either leave the system or pay up. You'd be surprised how often they'd rather pay up.
They key to this 'ransom' strategy is to be very courteous, very friendly. They're more likely to trust you.

It's when the victim has pride :P
Sadly when they agree to a ransom I figure there's something worth ransoming on the ship so I wish I didn't ransom. So I don't ransom often anymore, unless they ask politely or unless I can't kill them (ie. ransom = I'll stop harrassing them so they can get back to mining/ratting)

Piracy provides enough green through looting and ransom alone. I read alot about fellow pirates being unable to ransom and yet I find that 8/10 times customers will pay. The key is to charm the iskies out of them which naturally leads to trust which leads to a blinky wallet. Demanding payment without a smile is not synonimous to a sucessful ransom. However, I think in general one makes more notes from simply destroying the customers ship.

How else can you do it apart from owning the item, or having someone else link it for you and copying? As far as I know, you can't edit a link in eve, and you can only create new links with http or file protocols, you cannot make a showinfo link.

You can easily link you're fittings in space before and after Dragon. Just like it's easy to link stuff from assets - though you need to use the search button.

Fittings have been linkable for a while.
As to not owning something but linking it ? Tbh... I dont know But I do remember reading someones scamming based entirely on the general populations belief you NEED the item to link it. In Reality you dont

You are asking something there, but keep in mind that you can not travel both in the ship and in the shuttle at the same time. Pirating is fun because it makes you live on the edge. It may be expensive but it sure is worth it. I made my living only with rina and could not complain. Ransom as much as possible. Be polite or at least do not be a jerk. Keep your word: they pay, they leave alive; they do not , or stall or give you smack for being what you are, they die. In time you get the skills to know which or better said guess which ones to ransom and which ones to just blow up fo the modules. This type of PVP beats the crap out of mining.
Pirating is good. (was good as I no longer pirate and am seeking other goals)
Cheers,

I'd love to be able to do that. Not for scamming, but just for being able to show people exactly what module I'm talking about.
If someone here knows how to do it, please do tell, you could potentially save me from tearing out my hair in frustration in future.
...on the other hand using a banana might be a viable alternative.

That was Macro's scam based on the old belief that you could not link an item not in your cargo hold in space (you could, but you had to do it through assets search, not just the normal assets window.

I was attacked by a pirate yesterday in low sec. He ransomed me and I said I would pay. My real reason for paying was the fact that 1 warp behind me were my 3 BS flying friends. So as I took my time to transfer the ISK to him, claiming I made a mistake and didn't mean to give him 10k when he asked for 10mil, my friends entered the system.
I warp scramed him and he started to fire, just then my friends showed up and we toasted him very quickly. The Lesson is, being a Pirate can make you ISK, but you take the risk, sometimes it doesn't pay off. ------------------------------------- Sammael's Legion ARCH |

I give people 30 seconds to transfer the ransom. I dont have this problem.
