I've played EVE casually on and off since 2009. I was wondering if this game is even worth coming back too now with all of the changes. My biggest issues so far are the micro-transactions as well as the leak of that "Greed is good?" CCP internal newsletter. That particular article has me concerned as to the direction that the game is going. The micro-trasactions in the current state are something that I can TOLERATE since pretty much every other MMO I've come across has them nowadays. I'm a 7 year WoW vet and couldn't believe when WoW first got them. EVE however was a game I was never expecting to ever start with micro-transactions. Besides the micro-transactions I was wondering how the game's health is as a whole? I've re-subbed for a month to see how I like it so far. I want to play. EVE has always been a game that has intrigued me. I look forward to your responses.

Don't worry about the micro transactions (some of which aren't so micro). They are all purely cosmetic items that give you absolutely no advantage in the game. That "greed is good" fiasco was years ago and a lot of things have changed at CCP, especially recently. They've been knocking it out of the park lately with the changes they've been implementing, at least so far as I'm concerned, and I know many people tend to agree.
Play the game for awhile and judge for yourself though. Clearly a lot of people still find it worth playing, otherwise the game wouldn't have players. |

This game doesn't have the pay-to-cheat found in Archeage for instance. (Yes, I made the mistake of trying that game. If you think EVE's scammers are ruthless, you should see Trion).
There are no paid services in this game that provide more of an advantage than multiple accounts do.

Thank you for the responses so far. I didn't quite clarify what I'm concerned with. What I'm concerned with isn't so much the micro-transactions that are currently available, it's with what CCP could potentially be making available. Such as P2W transactions and such. |

Prior to the Incarna debacle, that was a valid fear.
I think CCP learned from the loss of subscribers and goodwill that the EVE community does not tolerate paid cheating (beyond the generally accepted multiple accounts and PLEX), and they backed sharply away from anything that could be construed as paid cheating, except for the aforementioned PLEX issue.

See PLEX doesn't really bother me. I see it as an easy and almost cheating way to get ISK, but I also see it as a way for players who don't want to spend the IRL money and a sub to play without one. If there's a negative point I'm missing I'd like to hear it. I've only played casually on and off so I don't know too much about the impact of something like PLEX on the economy. |

Yeah CCP won't be touched non-cosmetic MTs or walking in stations with a 10 foot pole for the foreseeable future but everything they done in the last 6 months has been pretty awesome. You have nothing to fear.

Wait...wut?
You are basing your findings on something happened in the summer of Freaking 2011....
Something we all rioted about and CCP canceling that whole idea?
Then, no...stay away from the game.
If you really looked into all the changes since when you left, you will see the game is better then ever and certainly worthwhile to join (again).

Do your research again please.
If you did some proper research, you would also have found out that in 2011, we all rioted to the "Greed is Good" / "Gimme Gold Ammo Please" idea...
And that CCP had to fire people and totally scrapped that idea.
p.s. micro-transactions exist, in teh for of vanity stuff (clothing and ship paintjobs). CCP has stated that "so far" all they will put up as microtransactions are things that don't directly interfere with the game itself.

We has a meeting with the monetization and growth team at the summer CSM summit.
They were very clear that they're not taking the game Pay to Win. (we would yell at them, if they were)
The monetization that's being looked at is for providing services, such as name changes, gender changes, more clothes, that kind of thing. Non-gameplay affecting stuff.

Name changes are at the higher end of pay to cheat.
Changing his name would probably be worth 50 billion ISK or more to Bad Bobby, for instance, or various other ultra-high profile thieves.
Some of the rules prohibiting certain types of character bazaar scams exist solely to prevent people changing their identity in-game (e.g. not being allowed to post a thread that is a 'fake sale' where you claim you are selling a character and have a fake buyer accept it so that it leaves a paper trail as though there was a sale).

Still...it should not be possible.
And 50 bil aint that much for someone who can put some effort into the game. If that is the "ballpark" estimate it would mean I could change name about every 2 to 3 months given the traders run okay-ish.
Not to mention, how are CCP going to work with scrapped names and the ability to recycle them (to prevent a new player that on accident picks a name of some hatred by many and thus limiting their playstyle cause of that).
Sorry, I just dont see any justification to the option and a whole bunch of downsides. If people want a different name, make a new character. If you are unhappy of your name, you should have thought about that when you made the character or ask CCP to change iy for you if you feel lucky (Remember Butts)

Name changes were one of the controversial things being discussed there
Full name history would be maintained. Look at someone, and you'll see who they used to be. Search for someone by their old name, and you'll still find them.
Takes care of the more egregious problems.

Queen Chribba? /me runs away
But back OT. Been here since end 2008. Rioted with the rest about monocle gate/greedisbad/the door that won't open/melting graphics cards etc. Left 6 month's ago thinking CCP went way overboard with "visions" that I cannot play, but kept a finger at the wrist (forums). Been back for a week or 2 since I see many, many great things happening, as if CCP finally found a new track and is *FFWD* speeding into the future.
No more lacklustre expansions 2x a year but every 6 weeks a new packed to the rim patch with new content/fixes and what not.
And no gold ammo will not ever appear in EVE. Unless CCP wants to kill EVE off.
So yep, still worth playing and please don't compare EVE to that theme park called wow. |

Internal memo was debating over "gold ammo" and other goods which would provide an edge to players over those who didn't want to use it. This was done at the same time as the in-game NEX store popped up. Players put 1+1 together and quit en-masse (me included) to stay away until the end result was set in stone (no P2W). |

I must say, now that its clear that you will not be able to use multiboxing programs to broadcast one click to multiple clients, its going to be harder to "pay to win". Imo that have been availeble for a long time, in terms of plex. The ingame microtransitions however are cosmetics only, and dont give players an edge. But ofc, you can pay out for tons of plex, buy the best character you can find, and og fit the most expensive pvp ship you can. Still wont count for nothing when a group of buddies sneak up on you and make your heart skip a beat due to the adrenaline injection. EvE is not a easy game, and if you belive you can pay to win here, you migth get a financial slap in the face :P |

But yeah, I'd be for name changes (obviously with the old one one the character sheet somewhere)
